The writing technique is excellent, the worldbuilding interesting and poetic, the characters enjoyable to spend time with, and there’s tea. It was interesting, entertaining, and enjoyable – two thumbs up.

Oh hey, I just finished reading/rereading the Pingkang Li mysteries yesterday. THE JADE TEMPTRESS is my favorite of the lot, probably in part because I like it as romance as well as historical mystery: Lin’s pairings make sense as pairings but don’t always leave me confident of their longer term viability, and I’m somewhat less concerned about this couple than most of the others in the series. I do think you probably need to read the first book before this one, though.
Lin excels at world-building, so if that’s one of the things you, like me, particularly read for, I definitely recommend this series.
Ooh, I loved three out of four of these – clearly a sign I should give the Julie London book a try.

@flchen1 I just want to point out that A.J. Finn is a fabulist. He seems like a sociopath. “The Woman in the Window” was meh. The expose on him, on the other hand, was quite entertaining. His real name is Dan Mallory and he worked in the publishing industry.

Several former colleagues of Mallory’s who were interviewed for this article recalled feeling deeply unnerved by him. One, in London, said, “He exploited people who were sweet-natured.” A colleague at William Morrow told friends, “There’s this guy in my office who’s got a ‘Talented Mr. Ripley’ thing going on.” In 2013, Sophie Hannah, the esteemed British crime-fiction writer, whose work includes the sanctioned continuation of Agatha Christie’s series of detective novels, was one of Mallory’s authors; she came to distrust accounts that he had given about being gravely ill.
