  • The Mimicking of Known Successes

The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older

RECOMMENDED: The Mimicking of Known Success by Malka Older is $2.99! We mentioned this on Hide Your Wallet and Carrie reviewed it and gave it a B+:

The writing technique is excellent, the worldbuilding interesting and poetic, the characters enjoyable to spend time with, and there’s tea. It was interesting, entertaining, and enjoyable – two thumbs up.

The Mimicking of Known Successes presents a cozy Holmesian murder mystery and sapphic romance, set on Jupiter, by Malka Older, author of the critically-acclaimed Centenal Cycle.

On a remote, gas-wreathed outpost of a human colony on Jupiter, a man goes missing. The enigmatic Investigator Mossa follows his trail to Valdegeld, home to the colony’s erudite university—and Mossa’s former girlfriend, a scholar of Earth’s pre-collapse ecosystems.

Pleiti has dedicated her research and her career to aiding the larger effort towards a possible return to Earth. When Mossa unexpectedly arrives and requests Pleiti’s assistance in her latest investigation, the two of them embark on a twisting path in which the future of life on Earth is at stake—and, perhaps, their futures, together.

  • The Lawrence Browne Affair

The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian

The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian is 99c! This is book two in the Turner Series, though I believe it can be read on its own. Are you a Sebastian fan? Which book is your favorite?

An earl hiding from his future . . .

Lawrence Browne, the Earl of Radnor, is mad. At least, that’s what he and most of the village believes. A brilliant scientist, he hides himself away in his family’s crumbling estate, unwilling to venture into the outside world. When an annoyingly handsome man arrives at Penkellis, claiming to be Lawrence’s new secretary, his carefully planned world is turned upside down.

    A swindler haunted by his past . . .

Georgie Turner has made his life pretending to be anyone but himself. A swindler and con man, he can slip into an identity faster than he can change clothes. But when his long-dead conscience resurrects and a dangerous associate is out for blood, Georgie escapes to the wilds of Cornwall. Pretending to be a secretary should be easy, but he doesn’t expect that the only madness he finds is the one he has for the gorgeous earl.

Can they find forever in the wreckage of their lives?

Challenging each other at every turn, the two men soon give into the desire that threatens to overwhelm them. But with one man convinced he is at the very brink of madness and the other hiding his real identity, only true love can make this an affair to remember.

  • The Jade Temptress

The Jade Temptress by Jeannie Lin

The Jade Temptress by Jeannie Lin is $1.99! This is an opposites attract historical romance with some mystery elements. Readers loved the setting, while others mentioned it didn’t capture their excitement as well as the first book. Readers, what are your opinions?

Welcome to the infamous Pingkang Li—home of the celebrated Lotus Palace courtesans, and a place of beauty and treachery…

Charming and seductive, Mingyu is the most sought-after hostess in the pleasure quarter. She has all men wrapped around her finger—except Constable Wu Kaifeng, the one man she can’t resist, the only man to have placed her in chains.

  • The Viscount Who Vexed Me

The Viscount Who Vexed Me by Julia London

The Viscount Who Vexed Me by Julia London is $1.99! This historical romance is book three in the Royal Match series. I’m getting a hint of Cyrano de Bergerac from the description.

    Daring. Darling. Determined.

Next to the Season’s newest diamond , Harriet (Hattie) Woodchurch feels like a plain Jane. But that’s of no consequence, since Hattie’s plan for her future is to earn enough to live far, far away from her embarrassing family.

That is until Mateo Vincente, Duke of Santiava and newly minted Viscount Abbott, arrives in London. While the shy European’s spoken English is impeccable, his writing is less fluent. The ton is eager to meet the handsome bachelor, and so many invitations flood in that Mateo needs a correspondence secretary.

With her perfect penmanship and way with words, Hattie is recommended, and the two bond over books and the ton’s eligible ladies. But when Hattie’s friend Flora becomes smitten with the viscount, things get complicated. Flora is tongue-tied in his presence. To help, Hattie feeds her information about Mateo’s interests. Soon things turn around and Flora appears on track to become his duchess. Yet for Mateo, something’s not quite right. Conversation with Flora isn’t as scintillating as it is with Hattie…

  1. Star says:

Oh hey, I just finished reading/rereading the Pingkang Li mysteries yesterday. THE JADE TEMPTRESS is my favorite of the lot, probably in part because I like it as romance as well as historical mystery: Lin’s pairings make sense as pairings but don’t always leave me confident of their longer term viability, and I’m somewhat less concerned about this couple than most of the others in the series. I do think you probably need to read the first book before this one, though.

Lin excels at world-building, so if that’s one of the things you, like me, particularly read for, I definitely recommend this series.

Ooh, I loved three out of four of these – clearly a sign I should give the Julie London book a try.

  5. Lynn S says:

@flchen1 I just want to point out that A.J. Finn is a fabulist. He seems like a sociopath. “The Woman in the Window” was meh. The expose on him, on the other hand, was quite entertaining. His real name is Dan Mallory and he worked in the publishing industry.

A Suspense Novelist’s Trail of Deceptions
    https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/02/11/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-deceptions

“Mallory had by then spent a decade in publishing, in London and New York, and many people in the profession had heard rumors about him, including the suggestion that he had left jobs under peculiar circumstances. Several former colleagues of Mallory’s who were interviewed for this article recalled feeling deeply unnerved by him. One, in London, said, “He exploited people who were sweet-natured.” A colleague at William Morrow told friends, “There’s this guy in my office who’s got a ‘Talented Mr. Ripley’ thing going on.” In 2013, Sophie Hannah, the esteemed British crime-fiction writer, whose work includes the sanctioned continuation of Agatha Christie’s series of detective novels, was one of Mallory’s authors; she came to distrust accounts that he had given about being gravely ill.

I recently called a senior editor at a New York publishing company to discuss the experience of working with Mallory. “My God,” the editor said, with a laugh. “I knew I’d get this call. I didn’t know if it would be you or the F.B.I.””

@Lynn S, thank you so much–I had not been aware! I appreciate you providing that information. And whoa…
