  • For Her Consideration

For Her Consideration by Amy Spalding

For Her Consideration by Amy Spalding is $3.99! I remember mentioning this one in my Book Depository post because the UK cover is so gorgeous and this one feels more nondescript. While we don’t have an official review, I remember Shana liking this one during Slack discussions.

When an aspiring L.A. scriptwriter falls head-over-heels for a bossy and beautiful movie star after a devastating break-up, the two take a risk on love and cast themselves as the leading ladies of their own star-struck romance in this sweet and spirited love story from critically-acclaimed writer Amy Spalding in her adult debut.

A funny, flirty, and heartwarming novel about bad breakups, found families, and embracing life. A moving love story sure to appeal to fans of Casey McQuiston and Meryl Wilsner.

Since a crushing breakup three years ago, Nina Rice has written romance, friends, her dreams of scriptwriting for TV, and even L.A. proper out of her life. Instead, she’s safely out in the suburbs in her aunt’s condo working her talent agency job from home, managing celebrity email accounts, and certain that’s plenty of writing–and plot–for her life. But a surprise meeting called by Ari Fox, a young actress on everyone’s radar, stirs up all kinds of feelings Nina thought she’d deleted for good…

Ari is sexy, out and proud, and a serious control freak, according to Nina’s boss. She has her own ideas about how Nina should handle her emails–and about getting to know her ghostwriter. When she tells Nina she should be writing again, Nina suddenly finds it less scary to revisit her abandoned life than seriously consider that Ari is flirting with her. Between reconnecting with her old crew and working on a new script, a relationship with a movie star seems like something she’ll definitely mess up–but what could be more worth the risk?

“I loved how joyful, how thoughtful, and how real For Her Consideration was. . . . Amy Spalding made me adore Nina and her friends, fall in love with Nina and Ari, and want to live in their world forever.” —New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory

  • Tightrope

    Tightrope by Amanda Quick

Tightrope by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is the third book in the Burning Cove series, which I think Elyse enjoys. I’m pretty certain this can be read out of order, but correct me if I’m wrong.

An unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery walk a tightrope of desire as they race against a killer to find a machine that could change the world.

Former trapeze artist Amalie Vaughn moved to Burning Cove to reinvent herself, but things are not going well. After spending her entire inheritance on a mansion with the intention of turning it into a bed-and-breakfast, she learns too late that the villa is said to be cursed. When the first guest, Dr. Norman Pickwell, is murdered by his robot invention during a sold-out demonstration, rumors circulate that the curse is real.

In the chaotic aftermath of the spectacle, Amalie watches as a stranger from the audience disappears behind the curtain. When Matthias Jones reappears, he is slipping a gun into a concealed holster. It looks like the gossip that is swirling around him is true—Matthias evidently does have connections to the criminal underworld.

Matthias is on the trail of a groundbreaking prototype cipher machine. He suspects that Pickwell stole the device and planned to sell it. But now Pickwell is dead and the machine has vanished. When Matthias’s investigation leads him to Amalie’s front door, the attraction between them is intense, but she knows it is also dangerous. Amalie and Matthias must decide if they can trust each other and the passion that binds them, because time is running out.

  • Glitterland

    Glitterland by Alexis Hall

Glitterland by Alexis Hall is $1.99! This is one of Hall’s earlier books that received a cover redesign. Not sure how I like it, honestly. I think it’d fit more if the main characters were ice skaters. This book was also in a Rec League for bipolar representation.

From the acclaimed author of Boyfriend Material comes a deeply emotional romance about heartbreak, hope, and learning to love against all the odds.

Once the golden boy of the English literary scene, now a clinically depressed writer of pulp crime fiction, Ash Winters has given up on hope, happiness, and—most of all—himself. He lives his life between the cycles of his illness, haunted by the ghosts of other people’s expectations.

Then a chance encounter throws him into the path of Essex-born Darian Taylor. Flashy and loud, radiant and full of life, Darian couldn’t be more different…and yet he makes Ash laugh, reminding him of what it’s like to step beyond the boundaries of his anxiety. But Ash has been living in his own shadow for so long that he can no longer see a way out. Can a man who doesn’t trust himself ever trust in happiness? And how can someone who doesn’t believe in happiness ever fight for his own?

In the past, the universe is a glitterball I hold in the palm of my hand.

In the past, I am brilliant and I am happy and my every tomorrow is madness.

In the past, I am soaring, and falling, and breaking, and lost.

And now, there is only this.

  3. Vellw says:

Does the British baking book use American measurements (cups, tsp, tbsp)? Would love to try out these recipes but have always had trouble with the conversions.

  4. AnneUK says:

Glitterland is a revised and annotated re-issue. Alexis Hall had the chance to revisit the whole Spires series and this is the first. Also re-published are Waiting for the Flood which gets a companion story and For Real which has a LOT of very entertaining annotations. Pansies is due in November. I have rebought them all and enjoyed re-reading.
NOTE: if you have the originals on your e-reader, they are unaffected by downloading the new versions.

@Vellw get a kitchen scale! It is the best $15 I’ve spent and has saved me hours of washing measuring cups of peanut butter and molasses. Most of my recipes are in cups and I convert them to weights.

  6. Susan/DC says:

I like the new cover of Alexis Hall’s GLITTERLAND. It reminds me of a star-filled sky, one of my favorite images (with all the light pollution today, I miss seeing lots of stars in the sky). I understand why you associate it with ice skating, but I think it can also represent a character whose life has plunged into darkness and the possibility of light that comes with a new relationship.

  7. cleo says:

I read Glitterland when it first came out – it was Alexis Hall’s debut. It’s pretty dark compared to some of his more well known books. The narrator is entertainingly snarky, but also depressed, snobby and self-loathing. Living in his head is a lot – definitely read the sample first.

I remember thinking that it worked better as a story about living with depression and dealing with a stagnating friendship group than as a romance. I’d say it’s closest in vibes to the baking show book about Paris (Paris ? is About to Crumble), which I also thought worked better as a story about dealing with mental illness than as a romance.

  8. EditChief says:

Thumbs up for FOR HER CONSIDERATION– I enjoyed the storytelling and character development in this 1st book in Spalding’s “Out in Hollywood” series and am looking forward to the 3rd installment scheduled for early 2025. And I agree that the UK cover is much better.

  9. Trix says:

@Vellw I second trefoil’s kitchen scale rec! It’s extremely helpful with flour measurements if you want to avoid dry cakes. Due to atmospheric conditions and how you measure (even light dip-and-sweep usually involves some unintentional packing), you can get up to 2 ounces more flour than you want in a cup. I swear grams are easier once you get used to the idea, especially if you get a scale with a tare function (then you can just zero things out and weigh new ingredients as you go).

  10. BGinBmore says:

Regarding baking by weight rather than volume: King Arthur Baking Company has a terrific list of ingredients and their volume, weight in ounces, weights in metric: https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/learn/ingredient-weight-chart
