Cover Awe: Sparkly and Sunny

It’s time to look at covers we like!

The Witch and the Vampire by Francesca Flores. Two different feminine hands with their fingers interlaced. One hand is light brown, while the other is peachy white. Both have their fingernails painted in a shiny, rusty brown. Vines and purple flowers encircle the hands with little yellow lights reminiscent of fireflies. The paler hand has on an ornate gold bracelet, while the brown hand has on a black ring with red gems.

Amanda: Here for detailed illustrated covers of more than just two people and a nondescript background!

Sneezy: Couldn’t agree more, Amanda!!! The light is so warm and the plants so lush. I absolutely LOVE that detail of the hand on the left caressing the hand on the right and fiddling with the ring. It’s just breath taking!

Sarah: The jewelry detail is gorgeous and everything about this illustration is so lush!

Kiki: I’m SO drawn to that ring detail and the feeling of those prongs is super visceral. Lush is the perfect word!

A Hundred Vicious Turns by Lee Paige O'Brien. Two figures in a green and gold library. The front figure is holding a gold compass. They have a green jacket and red hair. The figure behind them is in red and holds a glowing orb of light. They have darker skin and long, black hair.

Amanda: YA cannot give us a damn break!

Sarah: MORE BOOKS FOR YOU AND YOU AND ALSO YOU

Sneezy: If I had a library like that, I could seduce anyone.

The Secret to a Southern Wedding by Synithia Williams. A Black woman with dark brown skin in a peachy pink off the shoulder dress. She's standing in front of a long banquet table and holding a bouquet of flowers. Her hair is in a loose bob and she has on a pearl choker and ruby drop earrings.

Amanda: Love this dress, even if it isn’t bra friendly. Definitely reminds me of a beautiful sunset.

Sneezy: This artist really makes me feel the different textures and heft of the fabrics on the dress!!! And how flowy and fluffy is the hair? AND they gave us pink on pink without drowning out the character. Goddamn!!!

Sarah: The image is incredibly elegant and like you said, Sneezy, the fabric texture and movement is so vivid.

Kiki: I love how warm this is, especially as I am huddled under blankets in the New England fall. It is peaches and sunshine on your skin warm.

Teacher of the Year by M.A. Wardell. A peachy pastel cover with two figures in front of a desk. One has floppy reddish hair and is sitting in a chair, holding his hand out. He has on a two-tone shit of white and pink and is wearing a pink bowtie. He has on salmon pants and socks with brown loafers. A man stands next to him, holding an apple. He has dark brown skin and a similar curly, floppy hairstyle. He is wearing a light blue pullover sweater and white slacks. He also has green socks and brown shoes.

Cover illustration by Myrian Strasbourg

Amanda: My only complaint is that these people look like BABIES and not adult teachers lol

But I love the pastels.

Sneezy: Hahaha I wouldn’t have guessed they were adult teachers just from this cover either. It’s still really pretty, though. I especially love the matching socks they have. All hail well coordinated Monarchs!

Sarah: There’s a sort of timeless quality to the colors and technique, like this could be from 40 years ago or right now. I love it.

Kiki: seconding the timelessness! This feels like an old film poster and the font of the title is deeply pleasing.

Ooh! That Francesca Flores cover is the dreamiest thing. Sadly the book itself doesn’t sound appealing; but I have a whole file of covers that I keep just as imagination-sparking artwork.

The first cover is lovely even though it did take me a moment to realize that I was looking at hands!

    These are all so lovely!

The covers *are* all gorgeous, but when I read the title on the first cover, THE WITCH AND THE VAMPIRE, my mind immediately jumped to the title, THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, and I realized that title might fit equally well a truly epic and NFW paranormal. (Or an ultimately boring closed door romance.) .. Ah, ADHD. Sorry CS Lewis.
