  • Someone in Time

Someone in Time by Jonathan Strahan

RECOMMENDED: Someone in Time edited by Jonathan Strahan is 99c! Thank you to everyone who let us know about this one. Carrie gave this one an A:

I can’t remember the last time I read an anthology in which every story touched me so much. Some have happy endings and some do not, but all of them are deeply affirming of the idea that human relationships, specifically romantic ones, are important.

Anthology of inclusive tales of people through time looking for one another and for ways for the world to be better.

Love brought together or torn apart by time travel.

This anthology is the latest collection of time-travel romance sci-fi short stories from prominent, award-winning sci-fi authors including Nina Allan, Carrie Vaughn, and Seanan McGuire. Follow timetravelers of all genders as they go backward and forward in time, sometimes to save the one they love, other times as a sacrifice, and others simply because it’s their job. Some travel through memory, others through dreams, and others still through time machines to touch people who would otherwise be out of reach, and to join them together. Some of the stories are funny, some are sad and poignant, some are tales of fresh love and some of love forever lost, but they all are rather wonderful.

Including stories by: Alix E. Harrow, Zen Cho, Seanan McGuire, Sarah Gailey, Jeffrey Ford, Nina Allan, Elizabeth Hand, Lavanya Lakshminarayan, Catherynne M. Valente, Sam J. Miller, Rowan Coleman, Margo Lanagan, Sameem Siddiqui, Theodora Goss, Carrie Vaughn, Ellen Klages

  • The Write Escape

The Write Escape by Charish Reid

RECOMMENDED: The Write Escape by Charish Reid is $1.99! Shana reviewed this one and have it a B+:

Despite my criticisms, The Write Escape made me feel like I was vacationing with Antonia and Aiden as they sensually explored the countryside: the smell of peat fire; the roughness of a nubby sweater; windy storms outside a warm cottage; the sounds of a small town pub where old men sing shanties.

    Take one heartbroken Chicago girl

Literary editor Antonia Harper had it all—the career, the man, the future. That was then. Now Antonia is jobless, alone and at a crossroads. What better time to travel the world? A solo honeymoon on the Emerald Isle will be like hitting the reset button. No distractions, no drama.

Add some luck o’ the Irish

Aiden Byrnes may be a literature professor, but words fail him when he meets the woman staying in the cottage next door. Tully Cross is meant to be a sleepy little village, and he’s meant to be on a working holiday—not a vacation, and most definitely not with his beautiful neighbor.

And you get some mighty good craic

They say laughter is the best medicine—and as it turns out, superhot sex isn’t so bad either. Antonia and Aiden’s spark quickly grows into what could be something special, if they’re willing to take the leap. Ending up an ocean apart is unthinkable, and when real life comes calling, there’s no ignoring that leap anymore…

  • Heiress in Red Silk

Heiress in Red Silk by Madeline Hunter

Heiress in Red Silk by Madeline Hunter is $3.99! This is book two in A Duke’s Heiress series and Catherine gave it a B-:

Heiress in Red Silk is a book that hooked right into my emotions and gave me what I wanted and needed from a story right now. While it was by no means a flawless romance, I adored the heroine, and there was one scene that hit me straight in the heart.

A sparkling new love story from a historical romance legend, perfect for Bridgerton fans and readers of Sabrina Jeffries, Eloisa James, and Grace Burrowes.

In one life-changing windfall, Rosamund Jameson goes from struggling shopkeeper to heiress—and co-owner of a new business. Not only will her sudden fortune allow her to move her millinery shop to fashionable London, but Rosamund will be able to provide her younger sister with a proper entry into society. The only hitch for resourceful Rosamund is her arrogant, infuriatingly handsome business partner…

Kevin Radnor is shocked that his late uncle, the Duke of Hollinburgh, bequeathed half his company to a total stranger—worse, a beguiling beauty who can only hinder his enterprise. But Rosamund insists on an active, equal partnership, so Kevin embarks on a plan: a seduction that will lead to a marriage of convenience, giving Rosamund the social status she needs, and guaranteeing him the silent partner he desires. Yet as this charismatic gentleman sets his flirtation in motion, he begins to wonder who is seducing whom—and if he can learn to share himself body and mind, without losing his heart . . .

  4. Sandra says:

@Maria F: A lot of Dorothy L Sayers’ work is now in the public domain, so you can get good deals on the Wimsey books. Check the samples, though. Some publishers are better than others.

I’m currently rereading Gaudy Night for the umpteenth time. I haven’t actually read it in years, and while it’s one of my favorite Wimsey’s, I had forgotten how much pretentious navel gazing Harriet did in the early part of the book.

  5. Laura says:

Madeline Hunter doesn’t get enough attention in the romance writers community. Her heroines aren’t anachronisms doing 21st century things in the middle of Regency England. Plus she doesn’t shy away from steam.

  6. Maria F says:

@Sandra thanks! about 10 years ago (!) i was able to snap up all the Wimsey books at 1.99 apiece—lovely sale—but i saw the kdd for Striding Folly and thought i’d mention it. i think Clouds of Witness, Whose Body?, and Unnatural Death are the ones currently in the public domain in the US.

  7. Maria F says:

@Sandra and i also have read Gaudy Night a gazillion times but not recently. you make me curious about a re-read!

  8. Tam says:

I feel like a Regency aristocrat called KEVIN is a hilarious anachronism, personally, but I recognize that historically accurate names are one of my personal peeves.

  9. Laura says:

@Tam I agree, “Kevin” set me back a bit. I was referring to FMC behavior and attitudes within Regency mores.

  10. Michael I says:

    @Tam, @Laura

Kevin isn’t an IMPOSSIBLE name for a Regency-era aristocrat (there’s a seventh century Saint Kevin), although (per Wikipedia) the name seems to have been fairly rare until the 20 century.

  12. Tam says:

It’s more that Kevin is a distinctively Irish name during a period where even the Irish aristocrats were using English names, and when ‘Kevin’ was not in common usage at all.

  13. Escapeologist says:

@flchen1 – The Bride Takes a Groom: The Penhallow Dynasty (Penhallow Dynasty, 3)
    by Lisa Berne

I’ve read this one! It’s good and it stands alone well enough. Definitely got the rec from SBTB, possibly it was reviewed? I remember a strong heroine, banter, found family warm fuzzies.
