Hide Your Wallet

December 2022 New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • The Lone Wolf’s Rejected Mate

The Lone Wolf’s Rejected Mate by Cate Wells

    Author: Cate Wells
    Released: December 26, 2022
    Genre: ,
    Series: Five Packs #3

After one night, he walked away. He’s going to live to regret it.

    Mari
Growing up alone in Quarry Pack, I always dreamed of a mate who’d sweep me off my feet and carry me away to our very own cottage that we’d fill with pups and love and laughter. A real family.

    What I got?

    Wham, bam, thank you ma’am.

The pack sees Darragh Ryan as a tortured hero with a dark past, protecting the pack from afar.

I know better. He’s a jerk who can’t deal with people so he’s chosen to live in the wilderness and—I don’t know—brood. One thing I do know is that he doesn’t get to reject me.

    I reject him.

    Darragh
Mari doesn’t understand what she doesn’t know. She’s naïve, soft, and way too young and sweet for a life of self-imposed exile.

She’s a grown female who sits in trees, reading books, and wears party dresses to garden. Everything she owns is pink. Her wolf is probably pink.

She can’t handle the real world, and she sure can’t handle my wolf. No one can.

One day, she’ll understand why I won’t claim her, and she might not thank me, but she should.

Because my wolf? Given half a chance, he’d tear her apart.

The Lone Wolf’s Rejected Mate is the third novel in The Five Packs series, but it can be read as a standalone. No cheating. HEA guaranteed. Intended for adult readers only.

Aarya: Liked the first two books with caveats.

The Book of Everlasting Things by Aanchal Malhotra

    Author: Aanchal Malhotra
Released: December 27, 2022 by Flatiron Books
    Genre: ,

On a January morning in 1938, Samir Vij first locks eyes with Firdaus Khan through the rows of perfume bottles in his family’s ittar shop in Lahore. Over the years that follow, the perfumer’s apprentice and calligrapher’s apprentice fall in love with their ancient crafts and with each other, dreaming of the life they will one day share. But as the struggle for Indian independence gathers force, their beloved city is ravaged by Partition. Suddenly, they find themselves on opposite sides: Samir, a Hindu, becomes Indian and Firdaus, a Muslim, becomes Pakistani, their love now forbidden. Severed from one another, Samir and Firdaus make a series of fateful decisions that will change the course of their lives forever. As their paths spiral away from each other, they must each decide how much of the past they are willing to let go, and what it will cost them.

Lush, sensuous, and deeply romantic, The Book of Everlasting Things is the story of two lovers and two nations, split apart by forces beyond their control, yet bound by love and memory. Filled with exquisite descriptions of perfume and calligraphy, spanning continents and generations, Aanchal Malhotra’s debut novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

    Shana’s pick!

  • The Heretic Royal

The Heretic Royal by G.A. Aiken

    Author: G.A. Aiken
Released: December 27, 2022 by Kensington Books
    Genre: , ,
Series: The Scarred Earth Saga #3

As two sisters battle for a single throne in G.A. Aiken’s newest fantasy, warring factions take up arms, a land is divided, and uncertain allies become very certain lovers . . .

    Gods save the queen!

Ainsley Farmerson has always planned to break free of the family business—and the family drama. But what was once farming, smithworking, and bickering over the dinner table has turned into open warfare between sisters. Sides have been taken, lives are on the line, and Ainsley has no doubt which sister must be queen. She’ll do whatever is necessary to take down the soulless Beatrix. Even if that means joining forces with angry battle nuns, irritating monks, and overbearing centaurs.

Gruffyn of the Torn Moon Clan has no time for human beings. And yet . . . there is something about the uncontrollable princess that he can’t ignore. Maybe it’s the way her eldest sisters underestimate her. Or her bravery facing down dragons and mad queens from distant lands. Whatever the reason, Gruff is willing to fight by this human’s side. Not only for the entertainment value, but because she’s right. Beatrix must never be queen. So whatever he has to do, whoever he has to destroy, Gruff will battle beside Ainsley. Fast. Hard. And with absolutely no mercy . . .

Amanda: So excited for the continuation of this series!

  • Never Cross a Highlander

Never Cross a Highlander by Lisa Rayne

    Author: Lisa Rayne
Released: December 27, 2022 by Entangled: Amara
    Genre: ,
    Series: Shadow Lairds #1

Ailsa Connery has waited three long years to finally escape her enslavement at Stirling Castle and reunite with her clan. But her carefully laid plans are completely destroyed by the arrival of the infamous Highland warrior known as Dubh Mahoun, the Black Devil…who has plans of his own.

Kallum MacNeill’s fearsome reputation has long allowed him to keep hidden his secret double life of freeing enslaved captives across the land. It’s only when he kidnaps a servant lass—quite by accident—that he finds himself facing a wee predicament. He must accompany the lass home or risk her exposing his true identity. It’d be easy enough…if the feisty hellion didn’t fight him at every turn.

As they make their way to the Highlands, the perils the two must face are surpassed only by their constant sparring. Soon, their heated sniping sparks heat of a totally different kind. The kind that ignites a hunger that could consume them both. Yet the difficult journey is no match for the dangerous secrets they’re about to uncover.

Shana: This cover made me stop in my tracks, and the story sounds super fun too.

  1. MirandaB says:

The Secret of the Lost Pearls by Darcie Wilde: Next in the Rosalind Thorne series. I enjoyed this series because Rosalind and the other characters seem of their time and use the conventions of their world to navigate and survive.

  2. Darlynne says:

THE BOOK OF EVERLASTING THINGS sounds gorgeous and heartbreaking. I must have it.

  3. DonnaMarie says:

I’ve got the last book in Nora Robert’s Dragon Heart Legacy, THE CHOICE, coming up on deck for last/first read of the year. As in fall asleep reading it New Year’s Eve finish it when I wake up New Year’s Day. I feel this is a pretty solid plan for good reading in the the future.

I haven’t fed my WWII historical fiction with romantic elements addiction in a while so I’ll be picking up GIRLS OF FLIGHT CITY by Lorraine Heath. It takes place in the USA for a change and tells an “inspired by true events” story of four women working at a flight school in Texas where RAF pilots are being trained in secret.

  4. KatiM says:

Never Cross a Highlander is on Netgalley. I requested hoping the publisher will grant one last holiday wish.

The Rayne is on my TBR pile! Considering the Malhotra as well.
