  • Payback’s a Witch

Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper

RECOMMENDED: Payback’s a Witch by Lana Harper is $1.99! Ellen gave this one a B:

Overall, this book had many strong elements, with a few minor missteps. I think you pretty much get what you expect in terms of a relatively light, atmospheric, sexy sapphic romance perfect for spooky season. If there are additional series entries, I will absolutely be reading them.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets The L Word in this fresh, sizzling rom-com by Lana Harper.

Emmy Harlow is a witch but not a very powerful one—in part because she hasn’t been home to the magical town of Thistle Grove in years. Her self-imposed exile has a lot to do with a complicated family history and a desire to forge her own way in the world, and only the very tiniest bit to do with Gareth Blackmoore, heir to the most powerful magical family in town and casual breaker of hearts and destroyer of dreams.

But when a spellcasting tournament that her family serves as arbiters for approaches, it turns out the pull of tradition (or the truly impressive parental guilt trip that comes with it) is strong enough to bring Emmy back. She’s determined to do her familial duty; spend some quality time with her best friend, Linden Thorn; and get back to her real life in Chicago.

On her first night home, Emmy runs into Talia Avramov—an all-around badass adept in the darker magical arts—who is fresh off a bad breakup . . . with Gareth Blackmoore. Talia had let herself be charmed, only to discover that Gareth was also seeing Linden—unbeknownst to either of them. And now she and Linden want revenge. Only one question stands: Is Emmy in?

But most concerning of all: Why can’t she stop thinking about the terrifyingly competent, devastatingly gorgeous, wickedly charming Talia Avramov?

  • Party of Two

Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory

Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and I think one of the few Guillory’s we haven’t featured on sale before. Grab this one if you’re looking to collect the entire Guillory collection.

A chance meeting with a handsome stranger turns into a whirlwind affair that gets everyone talking.

Dating is the last thing on Olivia Monroe’s mind when she moves to LA to start her own law firm. But when she meets a gorgeous man at a hotel bar and they spend the entire night flirting, she discovers too late that he is none other than hotshot junior senator Max Powell. Olivia has zero interest in dating a politician, but when a cake arrives at her office with the cutest message, she can’t resist—it is chocolate cake, after all.

Olivia is surprised to find that Max is sweet, funny, and noble—not just some privileged white politician she assumed him to be. Because of Max’s high-profile job, they start seeing each other secretly, which leads to clandestine dates and silly disguises. But when they finally go public, the intense media scrutiny means people are now digging up her rocky past and criticizing her job, even her suitability as a trophy girlfriend. Olivia knows what she has with Max is something special, but is it strong enough to survive the heat of the spotlight?

  • The Devil to Pay

The Devil to Pay by K.C. Bateman

The Devil to Pay by K.C. Bateman is FREE! This is a historical romance by Kate Bateman, whose current stuff both Elyse and I have enjoyed. I’m also interested in the Italian setting. Have you read this one?

    Italy, 1492.
A ruthless mercenary skilled in the art of conquest.
An heiress who refuses to be tamed.
    The Devil’s own bargain . . .

Cara di Montessori has a price upon her head. Her traitorous uncle has murdered her father and seized her home. Her only hope of survival, and of regaining her birthright, is an alliance with her childhood nemesis, the infamous mercenary Il Diavolo. The most irritating—and seductive—man Cara’s ever met.

Battle hardened and world-weary, Alessandro del Sarto has earned the sobriquet Il Diavolo. He needs a politically expedient marriage to secure the lasting peace he craves,
but the simpering ladies of court hold little interest. More than anything, he longs for a challenge.

Headstrong beauty Cara has always been Il Diavolo’s only weakness, the one woman he’s never been able to forget. When she appears at his door begging for help, the two strike a devil’s bargain. In return for his assistance, for two weeks Cara must entertain his guests, relieve his boredom—and warm his bed.

Cara has no intention of succumbing to del Sarto’s studied seduction, but the passion that simmers between them is more potent than her paper twists of gunpowder. Surrounded by danger and intrigue, she must choose between what she’s always thought of as her destiny, and what could be the greatest prize of all—her heart’s desire.

  • Along for the Ride

Along for the Ride by Mimi Grace

Along for the Ride by Mimi Grace is FREE! Kiki reviewed this one and gave it a C+:

If you like romance novels that include a lot of what the characters are simply doing in their everyday lives, you might be delighted by the second half of Along for the Ride. I know there are readers enjoy seeing a lot of these real life moments.

THIS ROAD TO LOVE MAY HAVE A FEW SPEED BUMPS…

Former hot mess Jolene Baxter is committed to doing better. It’s why she offered to help her sister and brother-in-law move across the country. However, her goodwill is tested when last minute changes—mainly her father ditching her for an all-expenses paid vacation—forces her to make the journey with a man who is the human version of a pebble in her shoe.

Jason Akana operates on lists and bitter coffee, but none of those things will help him on a sixteen-hour trip with the most infuriating woman. Maybe they can get along and forget their heated confrontation five years ago at his best friend’s wedding…when pigs fly.

But the addition of vehicle problems, an unplanned pit stop in a small town, and chemistry that inconveniently tags along, shifts their perspectives. And once the dust settles after their trip, a tentative friendship emerges. Will these two stubborn people successfully navigate the unexpected feelings that follow close behind? Or will they hit a roadblock before reaching happily ever after?

As someone who worked in a Montessori preschool and elementary for seven years, I can’t get over the heroine’s name in the Bateman freebie. I know others have talked about how character names have affected them and taken them out of stories before, and so I guess this is a first for me.

All I can think about are pink towers and binomial cubes and precocious children; also picturing Maria Montessori herself as a romance heroine and start giggling every time. 🙂

  2. Lostshadows says:

Not a romance, but John Scalzi’s latest book, The Kaiju Preservation Society, is $2.99 on Amazon today.

I found it pretty fun read.

  3. I enjoyed Payback’s a Witch SO much!

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@spinsterrevival: Plus the hero’s name seems a deliberate reflection of Andrea del Sarto, Renaissance painter and subject of a famous poem by Robert Browning. I know many people like Bateman, but those name choices seem a bit lazy to me.

  5. Jess says:

There’s a flash sale on Apple Books today that includes Kaiju Preservation Society along with The Maid by Nita Prose, Cemetary Boys by Aiden Thomas, and others.

  6. Tam says:

Oh, I liked Cemetery Boys! There were some stylistic things which were a bit first novelish, but it was definitely a fresh and new take for me on the old witch family theme.

  7. MeMe says:

I only like Cemetery Boys more the further I get from it. So happy for spooky teens and tweens to have story’s like that to fall into. The audiobook is excellent too

  8. Lisa F says:

I liked all of these; my pick would probably be the Guillory

  9. trefoil says:

@Jess I read The Maid this weekend and really liked it! It had an interesting voice and a good mystery.

  10. InsatiableRomanceReader says:

I read the “Devil to Pay” by Bateman after reading about it here.
Had a very 80’s vibe to it and so was surprised to see it had been published in 2018. It follows one of those outdated storylines (is that the right word?) where the heroine can never be better than the hero at anything, where the hero seems to be omniscient and somehow is supposedly in love with her from the first moment he met her. All the drawn out angst is predictable (He doesn’t love me! She doesn’t need me!), as are the villains. Was tempted many times to shake some sense into both of them.

  11. Star says:

@InsatiableRomanceReader – I’m glad to see you post this! I DNF’d it a year or two ago because of the inequality of the dynamic and its consequent to-me implausibility of the romance, and I’ve never been entirely sure that was the right call because it’s so hard to find historicals set in that era, and it’s one of my favourites to read about. What if it had gone in a completely different direction from what it seemed and I’d actually have loved it? So it’s a relief to hear that I made the right call. Thank you!
