  • The Rakess

    The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham

RECOMMENDED: The Rakess by Scarlett Peckham is $1.99! I haven’t seen any updates about new releases aside from something on Amazon for next March (SO FAR!), but I hope we get some soon! Carrie read this one and have it an A-:

The combination of personal catnip with descriptive language and complex characterization is spot on. I recommend this for fans of vocal feminism, found family, angst, and explicit sex in their historicals. I plan to read my copy many, many times!

Meet the SOCIETY OF SIRENS—three radical, libertine ladies determined to weaponize their scandalous reputations to fight for justice and the love they deserve…

    She’s a Rakess on a quest for women’s rights…

Seraphina Arden’s passions include equality, amorous affairs, and wild, wine-soaked nights. To raise funds for her cause, she’s set to publish explosive memoirs exposing the powerful man who ruined her. Her ideals are her purpose, her friends are her family, and her paramours are forbidden to linger in the morning.

    He’s not looking for a summer lover…

Adam Anderson is a wholesome, handsome, widowed Scottish architect, with two young children, a business to protect, and an aversion to scandal. He could never, ever afford to fall for Seraphina. But her indecent proposal—one month, no strings, no future—proves too tempting for a man who strains to keep his passions buried with the losses of his past.

    But one night changes everything…

What began as a fling soon forces them to confront painful secrets—and yearnings they thought they’d never have again. But when Seraphina discovers Adam’s future depends on the man she’s about to destroy, she must decide what to protect…her desire for justice, or her heart.

  • Any Rogue Will Do

Any Rogue Will Do by Bethany Bennett

Any Rogue Will Do by Bethany Bennett is $1.99! This is book one in the Misfits of Mayfair series and features a fake relationship. Book two was recently featured in an edition of Cover Awe. I’m actually pretty curious about this series, if anyone has read it and would like to share their thoughts.

He ruined her reputation―now he’s the only one who can save it.

For exactly one season, Lady Charlotte Wentworth played the biddable female the ton expected―and all it got her was society’s mockery and derision. Now she’s determined to be in charge of her own future. So when an unwanted suitor tries to manipulate her into an engagement, she has a plan. He can’t claim to be her fiancé if she’s engaged to someone else. Even if it means asking for help from the last man she would ever marry.

Ethan, Lord Amesbury, made a lot of mistakes, but the one he regrets the most is ruining Lady Charlotte’s reputation. He’s older and wiser now, but his attraction to Lottie never wavered. Going along with her charade is the least he can do to clean the slate and perhaps earn her forgiveness. And, if he’s lucky, her love.

  • Just a Heartbeat Away

Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone

Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone is $1.99! Aarya mentioned this one in a previous Whatcha Reading and mentioned it’s an age gap romance with a slow burn. She also picked Bastone’s follow up in the series for one of our Hide Your Wallet posts.

    Some people change your life

    Others change your heart

Newly widowed dad Sebastian Dorner was unraveling at the edges—until his son’s teacher, Via DeRosa, threw him a lifeline. Now, two years later, they reconnect at Matty’s new school, and an inconvenient but unmistakable jolt of attraction crackles between them. But why does the first person to spark with Sebastian in years have to be a millennial? Is twentysomething Via really too young for him or does fortysomething Sebastian just feel too damn old?

A former foster kid, Via’s finally forged the stable life she’s always dreamed of—new job, steady income, no drama. The last thing she needs are rumors about her and a single dad at school. But why does she keep being drawn into his capable, worn-flannel orbit? And why does being around Sebastian, Matty and even their dog, Crabby, seem to spark so much want?

They’re trying to ignore the tension threatening their friendship. But sometimes what’ll heal you is just a touch—and a heartbeat—away…

  • Bad Bachelor

    Bad Bachelor by Stefanie London

Bad Bachelor by Stefanie London is $1.99! Not terribly loving the new cover. I mostly enjoyed this one, but I had to overcome some issues to really get to the good stuff. Your mileage may vary depending on your reading patience. You can read my review here, where I gave it a B-.

Everybody’s talking about the hot new app reviewing New York’s most eligible bachelors. But why focus on prince charming when you can read the latest dirt on the lowest-ranked “Bad Bachelors”—NYC’s most notorious bad boys.

If one more person mentions Bad Bachelors to Reed McMahon, someone’s gonna get hurt. A PR whiz, Reed is known as an ‘image fixer’ but his womanizing ways have caught up with him. What he needs is a PR miracle of his own.

When Reed strolls into Darcy Greer’s workplace offering to help save the struggling library, she isn’t buying it. The prickly Brooklynite knows Reed is exactly the kind of guy she should avoid. But the library does need his help. As she reluctantly works with Reed, she realizes there’s more to a man than his reputation. Maybe, just maybe, Bad Bachelor #1 is THE one for her.

I really liked The Rakess! One funny note though is that while the use of historically accurate prophylactics in the book is educational it’s not exactly . . . sexy. Modern condom technology is underrated in my opinion.

  2. Liz says:

“The Rakess” was good enough that I’ll probably preorder the follow-up, even though I’m more into contemporaries. Speaking of which, Cara Bastone is also one of my very few auto-buy authors. I’ve read and enjoyed all her books–they’re consistently well-written, emotional, sexy, relatable, feminist, etc., with a lovely sense of community and place.

@Liz, I’ve been waffling over Just a Heartbeat Away since I first learned about it here, weeks ago. After reading your comment, my finger promptly directed itself to “Buy Now”. Thanks!

  4. Liz says:

@LML aw yay, I really hope you like it! <3
