  • The Jackal

    The Jackal by J.R. Ward

The Jackal by J.R. Ward is $1.99! This is book one in the Black Dagger Brotherhood spin-off series: Prison Camp. I fell off this particular bandwagon years ago, so I’m unsure if this spin-off can be started on its own and if the series has changed much since the original books.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Sinner brings another hot adventure of true love and ultimate sacrifice in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.

The location of the glymera’s notorious prison camp was lost after the raids. When a freak accident provides Nyx clues to where her sister may still be doing time, she becomes determined to find the secret subterranean labyrinth. Embarking on a journey under the earth, she learns a terrible truth—and meets a male who changes everything forever.

The Jackal has been in the camp for so long he cannot recall anything of the freedom he once knew. Trapped by circumstances out of his control, he helps Nyx because he cannot help himself. After she discovers what happened to her sister, getting her back out becomes a deadly mission for them both.

United by a passion they can’t deny, they work together on an escape plan for Nyx—even though their destiny is to be forever apart. And as the Black Dagger Brotherhood is called upon for help, and Rhage discovers he has a half-brother who’s falsely imprisoned, a devious warden plots the deaths of them all…even the Brothers.

  • Jane Doe

Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone

RECOMMENDEDJane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone is available for $1.99 at Amazon! Elyse and Sarah jointly review the book today and gave it a B+. They thought it was an empowering book, but felt the ending was a bit rushed. Please be warned that this book deals with all forms of abuse and abuse against a child. I’ve also heard other readers recommend the audiobook.

A double life with a single purpose: revenge.

Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes—meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven.

But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. So she can take it all away.

Just as he did to her.

  • Murder on Black Swan Lane

Murder on Black Swan Lane by Andrea Penrose

Murder on Black Swan Lane by Andrea Penrose is 99c! This is the first book in the historical mystery Wrexford & Sloane series, which I think Ellen enjoys. They may have mentioned a later book in the series on the site.

In Regency London, an unconventional scientist and a fearless female artist form an unlikely alliance to expose unspeakable evil . . .

The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London’s most popular satirical cartoonist, A.J. Quill, skewers them both. But then the clergyman is found slain in a church—his face burned by chemicals, his throat slashed ear to ear—and Wrexford finds himself the chief suspect.

An artist in her own right, Charlotte Sloane has secretly slipped into the persona of her late husband, using his nom de plume A.J. Quill. When Wrexford discovers her true identity, she fears it will be her undoing. But he has a proposal—use her sources to unveil the clergyman’s clandestine involvement in questionable scientific practices, and unmask the real murderer. Soon Lord Wrexford and the mysterious Mrs. Sloane plunge into a dangerous shadow world hidden among London’s intellectual enclaves to trap a cunning adversary—before they fall victim to the next experiment in villainy . . .

  • Targeted

    Targeted by Katie Reus

Targeted by Katie Reus is $1.99! This is the first book in the Deadly Ops romantic suspense series. The hero and heroine used to be in a relationship. It’s been years since they’ve seen each other and now the hero is undercover with a new persona. While readers loved the second chance romance combined with the hero’s disguise, some felt certain aspects of the story dragged a little long.

    Hidden in plain sight…

Former Marine sniper and current NSA agent Jack Stone has a new face to go with his new identity. But he still has the same tortured memories—which include the woman he let get away years ago, when they were teenagers. Now his new assignment in Miami will put him so close to the woman he’s never been able to forget, he could reach out and touch her—if only she weren’t under suspicion.

When Sophie Moreno uncovers evidence linking the medical supply company she works for with arms smuggling—and worse—she doesn’t know who to turn to. After a shocking betrayal, she realizes the only person she can trust is a mysterious new person in the company—a man with hauntingly familiar eyes.

As Sophie questions her intense attraction to this man and Jack struggles not to blow his cover, the two of them must race against the clock to stop terrorists from killing scores of people—starting with them.

I really enjoyed JANE DOE; I’m a fan of twisty tales & nasty people.

  2. Laurel says:

I used to read all of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, but the last few I read were not good, and I fell off the bandwagon. Why do I feel a pull to buy The Jackal? I know it is probably going to be bad, and it is only $1.99, but I don’t want to encourage J.R. Ward to continue to write bad books. Is there a self-help group for readers like me?

  3. Kareni says:

@Laurel, I think your self-help group may be SBTB; you are among friends here!

  4. Laurel says:

@Kareni – LOL, I think you are probably right.

  5. Yu says:

Flight from Laura Griffin is also on sale, I think I saw the A/B grade review on SBTB a few months ago. I think it’s romance and crime mystery? – Imma grab it, maybe it’s going to be interesting for someone else was well 🙂

  6. Darlynne says:

The most recent BDB/BDB-adjacent books have been, IMO, more violent. Sure, because if the old torture wasn’t enough, let’s turn up the dial. As someone who had a place on that bandwagon, I let the library do my buying now, if I even go so far as checking one out. To be fair, I loved the original series, OTT and everything, because Ward went places I hadn’t seen in vampire fiction. I’ll always have those memories.

  7. hng23 says:

@Yu: FLIGHT is book 2 in the TEXAS MURDER FILES series. You don’t need to read HIDDEN (book 1) first, but it helps, seeing as the protagonists are sisters. I enjoyed both books. There’s a third book, MIDNIGHT DUNES, coming out at the end of May 2022. I’d call them romance & suspense, though.

  8. Sandra says:

@Yu and @hng23: Snapped it up. I read Griffin’s books religiously at one point, but then she fell off my radar for some reason. I think because I burned out on romantic suspense. Ended up giving up the good along with the bad and the ugly.

  9. JudyW says:

The first two Murderbot diaries just dropped into kindle unlimited if you have that service. It would also make the audible book cheaper to purchase. They include All Systems Red and Artificial Condition and if you have NOT read Murderbot then I envy you the chance of experiencing the books for the first time.

  10. DonnaMarie says:

@Laurel back away slowly. Don’t blink.

  11. Ely says:

The next three books after “Murder on Black Swan Lane” are all $1.99 on Amazon US right now.

  12. Yu says:

    @hng23:
Awesome, thanks for the tip! I’m looking forward to it, the beginning is super promising 🙂
@Sandra: nice, here’s to hoping it’s going to be as good as it sounds like!

  13. ames says:

So the Wrexford books I’m super torn on. There are a lot of anachronisms, weird language tics, the character development of the main couple is somewhat limited, its a little derivative, and (this should be the kiss of death for me, as an ecologist) one of the kids finds a monarch butterfly to study in one book. In England. This is a New World species.

and yet, I enjoyed these on a second read even more than I did the first time. the orphans the heroine adopts are awesome. The audio versions are particularly fun to listen to. So, go figure.

does anyone have a suggestion for historical mystery / romance written set in Britain but written by Brits? this might help some of the language issues, at the least.

  14. Lisa L says:

@ames Not a Brit, but C.S. Harris writes a historical series set in Britain starting with What Angels Fear. Book 17 in the series is scheduled to come out this year. It’s one that I heartily recommend to library patrons and they dive in. Some amazing plot twists especially in the earlier books. I “wow”ed out loud. Definite romantic elements but not a romance overall. Fabulous mystery series.
