  • Someone to Romance

Someone to Romance by Mary Balogh

Someone to Romance by Mary Balogh is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and, I believe, the most recent title in the Westcott series. It was also mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. The Bitchery loves Balogh and this series especially. Do you have a favorite?

Love comes when you least expect it in this captivating new novel in the Wescott Regency romance series from New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh.

Lady Jessica Archer lost her own interest in the glittering excitement of romance after her cousin and dearest friend, Abigail Westcott, was rejected by the ton when her father was revealed to be a bigamist. Ever practical, however, once she’s twenty-five, she decides it’s time to wed. Though she no longer believes she will find true love, she is still very eligible. She is, after all, the sister of Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby.

Jessica considers the many qualified gentlemen who court her. But when she meets the mysterious Gabriel Thorne, who has returned to England from the New World to claim an equally mysterious inheritance, Jessica considers him completely unsuitable, because he had the audacity, when he first met her, to announce his intention to wed her.

When Jessica guesses who Gabriel really is, however, and watches the lengths to which he will go in order to protect those who rely upon him, she is drawn to his cause—and to the man.

  • The Veil

    The Veil by Chloe Neill

The Veil by Chloe Neill is $1.99! This is book one in a dystopian/urban fantasy series and I gave it a B. I read the second book, but kind of petered off after that because wow, there are a lot of books out in the world:

Truly, I loved the world that Neill has built and the grey area questions posed by the plot – who is the real enemy here? However, the story does suffer from what I’d like to call “first book syndrome,” which tends to happen in a lot of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.

Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil’s Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.

Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.

But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn…

  • Teddy Spenser Isn’t Looking for Love

Teddy Spenser Isn’t Looking for Love by Kim Fielding

Teddy Spenser Isn’t Looking for Love by Kim Fielding is $1.99! This sounds like it’s full of tropes: stuffy hero, only one bed, forced proximity. This is also part of the Carina Adores line. What do you think of the books coming out from Carina Adores?

Some people search their whole lives to find love. He just wants to avoid it.

Teddy Spenser spends his days selling design ideas to higher-ups, living or dying on each new pitch. Stodgy engineer types like Romeo Blue, his nemesis—if you can call someone who barely talks to you a nemesis—are a necessary evil. A cute necessary evil.

Working together is bad enough, but when their boss puts them both on a new high-stakes project, “working together” suddenly means:

sitting uncomfortably close on the same plane,

staying in the same hotel room—with only one bed—and

    spending every waking minute together.

Turns out Mr. Starched Shirt has some hidden depths, and it’s getting harder to ignore the spark Teddy feels with every brush of their hands, with every knowing look. He might not have been looking for this connection with Romeo, but will he ever be ready to let him go?

Carina Adores is home to highly romantic contemporary love stories where LGBTQ+ characters find their happily-ever-afters.

  • The Most Eligible Lord in London

The Most Eligible Lord in London by Ella Quinn

The Most Eligible Lord in London by Ella Quinn is 99c! This is book one in Quinn’s Lords of London trilogy, which is her newest series and a bit of a spin-off from The Worthingtons series. Quinn’s romance are usually lighter and fluffier in tone, which isn’t my personal reading jam, but it might be yours!

In this captivating new Regency trilogy, bestselling author Ella Quinn picks up where her beloved Worthingtons series left off, as three Lords of London discover true love at last…

Handsome, rakish, incorrigibly flirtatious—Fredrick, Lord Littleton, is notorious. Lady Adeline Wivenly is resolved to keep him at arm’s length during her first Season—until she overhears another woman’s plot to trick him into marriage. Even a rogue is undeserving of such deception, and Adeline feels obliged to warn him—only to find herself perilously attracted…

In the past, Littleton’s charm nearly got him leg-shackled to the wrong woman. Now he’s positive he’s found the right one, for Adeline is everything he wants and needs in a wife. Her sense of justice is so strong she agrees to help him despite her mistrust. But can the ton’s most elusive lord convince the lady he is finally serious about marriage—as long as she will be his bride?

Whee! Two from my wishlist! Clickety-click! I’ve been waiting for the Balogh title and ‘Teddy Spenser.’

Re: Carina Adores – I’ve read some of these and it’s fair to say what the imprint is doing works for me. To the point that I’ve submitted one of my own. (Fingers crossed.)

  2. JoJo says:

I’ve tried the read The Veil like 5 times and I just was like Meh every time. So Meh to that one.

  3. spinster.revival says:

I love the Westcott series so much it’s ridiculous. And somehow I read them not in order which still worked, even though honestly it’s quite a convoluted start that she has to rehash in every book. My reading went book 3, 5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8; it was a little nutty.

I’m not kidding when I say I love them all, but the third, Someone to Wed, is probably my fave. I actually wasn’t sure about Jessica’s story as she didn’t appeal to me in the previous books, but of course Balogh made it work and Gabriel was quite a swoon worthy hero. Also I love the family itself as the band together like no other I’ve read (including the Bridgerton crew).

So yes I immediately bought this as I’m trying to collect them all affordably after I read them all from the library. I’m done with gushing now; thanks for listening. 🙂

  4. Emily C says:

Murder on Black Swan Lake by Andrea Penrose is &1.99 on kindle today. It’s been on my tbr for awhile and I’m sure I heard about it here first. It’s the first of the Regency historical Wrexford & Sloan mystery series featuring a lady artist and a titled scientist. I think there’s a slow burn romance throughout the series.

  5. Lisa F says:

Teddy Spenser was pretty good – I like that and the Balogh, but I continue to enjoy Quinn’s work.

  6. Laurel says:

I love Mary Balogh, and Someone to Romance was a solid B for me. Her writing works so well for me. This is the seventh book in the series, and while you don’t have to read them in order, I think it is a richer read if you do.

The Veil was a huge disappointment. I liked most of the Chicagoland Vampires by Neill, but I wasn’t willing to pay an exorbitant price for an ebook, so I waited a long time for it to go on sale and bought it the last time it was on sale, which was not too long ago and might have been the first time it was on sale. (Note: for whatever reason, Chloe Neill’s book do not go on sale very often.) I was very glad I had not paid $13 for it. The relationship between the hero and heroine made no sense, and some of the world building was just silly. I rated it a D.

  7. Ren Benton says:

@Laurel: Neill’s books fall under the Penguin umbrella, and they are notoriously stingy with sales.

Much of my wish list is “Sold by: Penguin Group (USA) LLC,” and many have been there for YEARS because we have a difference of opinion about whether $10-$14 is a great price to try a new author or series.

  8. Darlynne says:

@Ren Benton: Preach, so much this. They will have to blink first.

  9. Liz says:

I’ve liked what I’ve read of Carina Adores, especially the Big Bad Wolf series by Charlie Adhara.

  10. Bea says:

Balogh says that Someone to Romance is her final book in the Westcott series and that torques me off.

    I WANT HARRY’S ROMANCE.
He deserves his own book after all that.

  11. Laurel says:

@Bea, I think you are wrong about the Westcott series: Someone to Cherish (Harry’s book) will be published in June, and Goodreads lists a 9th book, Someone Perfect.

  12. Laura says:

I agree with all the Balough comments and @Bea Someone To Cherish is Harry’s story and you’ll need a hankie. I love Jessica Archer’s story, she reminds me of Eloise Bridgerton in some ways. Both young women never thought they would want to fall in love/wed. But then they realized it was important to them and were fearful it wouldn’t happen for them.

  13. Stefanie Magura says:

I have a feature request for the website. Mary Balogh is one of a few authors I can think of who have multiple books and multiple series. For a new reader this can be overwhelming. I’d like a feature on the site which is a where to start reading so-and-so. Nora Roberts is another author whose backlist is similarly extensive. I’m sure I will manage to think of other authors for this hypothetical feature. I have seen a which one first feature in the site’s archive. Maybe that can be revived?
