  • Written in the Stars

Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur

RECOMMENDED: Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur is $3.99! Though the book copy mentions both Pride & Prejudice and Bridget Jones’s Diary, though our reviewers mention it’s more like the former than the latter. Aarya and Tara reviewed this one together and gave it an A-:

Tara: This book is so freaking cute, it should be illegal. And luckily, Aarya agrees with me, so we’re talking about it together!

With nods to Bridget Jones and Pride and Prejudice, a charming #ownvoices queer rom-com debut about a free-spirited social media astrologer who agrees to fake a relationship with an uptight actuary until New Year’s Eve—with results not even the stars could predict!

After a disastrous blind date, Darcy Lowell is desperate to stop her well-meaning brother from playing matchmaker ever again. Love—and the inevitable heartbreak—is the last thing she wants. So she fibs and says her latest set up was a success. Darcy doesn’t expect her lie to bite her in the ass.

Elle Jones, one of the astrologers behind the popular Twitter account, Oh My Stars, dreams of finding her soul mate. But she knows it is most assuredly not Darcy… a no-nonsense stick-in-the-mud, who is way too analytical, punctual, and skeptical for someone as free-spirited as Elle. When Darcy’s brother—and Elle’s new business partner—expresses how happy he is that they hit it off, Elle is baffled. Was Darcy on the same date? Because… awkward.

When Darcy begs Elle to play along, she agrees to pretend they’re dating to save face. But with a few conditions: Darcy must help Elle navigate her own overbearing family over the holidays and their arrangement expires on New Year’s Eve. The last thing they expect is to develop real feelings during a fake relationship.

But maybe opposites can attract when true love is written in the stars?

  • The Game and the Governess

The Game and the Governess by Kate Noble

The Game and the Governess by Kate Noble is $1.99! Sarah said she’s a big fan of Noble’s writing, whether it’s The Librarians or The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or historical romance. She reviewed this book back when it came out and gave it a B-. It’s not her favorite of Noble’s books, but she says it’s as thoughtful and as memorable:

The Game and the Governess is a thoughtful, intricate novel that deals very heavily with privilege, especially the privilege of the hero. The description that’s part of the cover copy says it best, I think: Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice.

Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice in this sexy, saucy romance—first in a new series from the author of YouTube sensation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

Three friends. One Wager. Winner takes all.

The Earl—‘Lucky Ned’ Ashby. Pompous, preening, certain that he is beloved by everyone.
The Miller—John Turner. Proud, forced to work as the Earl’s secretary, their relationship growing ever more strained.
The Doctor—Rhys Gray. Practical, peace-loving, but caught in the middle of two warring friends.

Their wager is simple: By trading places with John Turner and convincing someone to fall in love with him, Ned plans to prove it’s him the world adores, not his money. Turner plans to prove him wrong.

But no one planned on Phoebe Baker, the unassuming governess who would fall into their trap, and turn everything on its head…

  • Reimagining Lovecraft

    Reimagining Lovecraft by Victor LaValle

Reimagining Lovecraft is $2.99! This is a collection of four sci-fi/fantasy novella from some great authors. I personally love Victor LaValle and Carrie reviewed the Kij Johnson novella, giving it an A. Honestly, I think $3 is worth the cost of LaValle and Johnson’s novellas alone.

Four new Lovecraftian tales told by four amazing talents.

Government agents, monstrous P.I.s, walkers of dreams and magical hustlers meet in the pages of this astonishing anthology of four novellas.

The Ballad of Black Tom — the Nebula Award-nominated novella from Victor LaValle.

The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe — the Nebula Award-nominated novella from Kij Johnson.

Hammers on Bone — from Cassandra Khaw, an amazing new voice on the dark fiction scene.

Agents of Dreamland — from the multi award-winning Caitlín R. Kiernan.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

DARK FAIRY TALES is a good collection, but take the word “Dark” seriously—a several of the stories are pretty damn dark. My favorite story in the book was Sierra Simone’s “The Princess & the Pea,” featuring a female vice-president (yes!) reconnecting with her ex. On the whole, the stories were quite good (although in some cases some of the stories benefit from knowing the author’s other works & characters). However, a couple of the stories do feature “sharps & blood play” (the Marley Valentine especially) and those were hard passes for me.

  2. Lisa F says:

Written in the Stars is my big pick here – it was SUPER charming!

  3. Darlynne says:

@Lisa F: I agree, WRITTEN IN THE STARS was completely charming. Didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.

  4. I loooooved Written in the Stars! It’s the sweetest, bubbliest rom-com I’ve read in ages.

  5. Nomadicat says:

That is a great price for the Reimagining Lovecraft collection. I’ve read the Khaw and the Johnson and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about either– the mark of a truly excellent story to my way of thinking. Both have unique protagonists and are a great fit for anyone looking for Lovecraftian horror without, yanno, the racism and other bs good old HP brought to everything he created.

The other two in the collection are already in my TBR on strong recommendation from friends.

  6. Carrie G says:

For audiobook lovers, chirpbooks.com has several Lois McMaster Bujold books on sale. Curse of Chalion is 4.99, while Paladin of Souls, The Hallowed Hunt, and Pendric’s Demon (novella) are all 5.99. They all have different narrators, but each narrator is excellent, including Grover Gardner who narrates all the Vorkosigan books on the Pendric novella, and Kate Reading on Paladin of Souls. Lloyd James is masterful narrating Curse of Chalion.

You don’t need any membership to buy there.

  7. Annie Kate says:

Whacking that one-click button on Written In The Stars hard enough to hurt my finger.

I want to travel back in time and tell teenage me, who was a closeted queer girl in high school during the Bush administration, that fluffy queer romcoms would be mainstream by now. It would blow her mind.

  8. Jean C says:

Recipes for Love and Murder is a kindle daily deal, and I enjoyed it. It is set in South Africa, with a widowed Afrikaans protagonist who was abused by her husband.

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Annie Kate: I think how disbelieving I would be if I travelled back 40 years and told my eighties-era, bodice-ripper-consuming self, “One day you’re going to be reading male-male romances as compulsively as you’re now reading things like LOVE’S WILD DESIRES.”
