  • Breathless

    Breathless by Beverly Jenkins

Breathless by Beverly Jenkins is $1.99! Sarah read this one and gave it a B:

If you enjoy intelligent characters embarking on a very sweet and emotionally adorable romance amid a community of caring, interconnected women working together in a thousand crucial ways, you’ll like this book.

A strong-willed beauty finds herself in the arms of the handsome drifter from her past, in this second book in the sizzling series set in the Old West, from USA Today Bestselling Author Beverly Jenkins

As manager of one of the finest hotels in Arizona Territory, Portia Carmichael has respect and stability—qualities sorely missing from her harsh childhood. She refuses to jeopardize that by hitching herself to the wrong man. Suitors are plentiful, but none of them has ever looked quite as tempting as the family friend who just rode into town…and none has looked at her with such intensity and heat.

Duchess. That’s the nickname Kent Randolph gave Portia when she was a young girl. Now she’s a stunning, intelligent woman—and Kent has learned his share of hard lessons. After drifting through the West, he’s learned the value of a place to settle down, and in Portia’s arms he’s found that and more. But convincing her to trust him with her heart, not just her passion, will be the greatest challenge he’s known—and one he intends to win…

  • Conventionally Yours

    Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert

Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert is $1.99! This is a gay and geeky romance set at a convention (I miss those!). It was also a summer release that Elyse picked for Hide Your Wallet. Have you read this one? Or have you been waiting for a price drop?

When two “big name fans” go head-to-head at a convention, love isn’t the only thing at stake.

Charming, charismatic, and effortlessly popular, Conrad Stewart seems to have it all…but in reality, he’s scrambling to keep his life from tumbling out of control.

Brilliant, guarded, and endlessly driven, Alden Roth may as well be the poster boy for perfection…but even he can’t help but feel a little broken inside.

When these mortal enemies are stuck together on a cross-country road trip to the biggest fan convention of their lives, their infamous rivalry takes a backseat as an unexpected connection is forged. Yet each has a reason why they have to win the upcoming Odyssey gaming tournament and neither is willing to let emotion get in the way—even if it means giving up their one chance at something truly magical.

  • The Poppy War

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang is $2.99! I will warn that this fantasy novel is very graphic: sexual violence, atrocious warcrimes, self-harm, etc. If you’re able to read about those things, I highly recommend picking this one up. It’s a fantastic debut, at least in my opinion. I know your mileage may vary!

When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

    But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.

  • Fling Club

    Fling Club by Tara Brown

Fling Club by Tara Brown is 99c at Amazon! This is a class differences, opposites attract New Adult romance. I know it was previously mentioned on the site, but I can’t remember in what capacity. The second book in the series is also on sale.

It’s revenge—sweet and hot—in the first book of this sexy and wickedly funny series by international bestselling author Tara Brown.

For the young, rich, and beautiful, summertime in the Hamptons means one thing: Fling Club. Only this time, Cherry Kennedy won’t be selecting a boy for a fleeting romance. Nope, this season, Cherry is out for revenge. Her target? The Fling Club founder and society darling who slept with Cherry’s now-very-ex-boyfriend. And all Cherry needs is the perfect guy for her plan…

Ashley Jardine can’t afford to refuse. He scored almost a full ride to MIT. But that almost still costs a lot. And this is so much money for a little game of revenge and a chance—albeit short—to live the high life. Here, rich girls rule the shore, and everyone has a role to play. Only nothing in the job description warned Ashley that the redhead who’s running the scheme would be so crazy. And cute. Or that he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about her.

Now, everything is going according to plan—until an unexpected attraction raises the stakes. It’s enough to turn the perfect payback into absolute heartbreak.

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth is on sale for 3.99 on kindle today.

  2. Georgina says:

Baby, Come Back by Molly O’Keefe is free at Amazon. It’s the second book in a series, but apparently works as a stanalone? I read the first one a while back and though the criminal gangs/illegal fight club plot was not for me, I thought the writing was good, so if secret babies and dark stuff are your thing it might be worth checking out this one.

  3. Carrie G says:

The cover of Fling Club makes my back hurt and I want to tell the young man to “Roll your shoulders back, you’re ruining your posture! I can recommend a chiropractor.”

  4. Ren Benton says:

I DNF’d The Poppy War about halfway through. The protagonist had a clear motivation for the first part (get that military career to avoid being forced into marriage), with well-defined setting and secondary characters, and at about 40%, that story came to an exciting conclusion and charged immediately into a different story. Because it had to be the action-packed midpoint of one book rather than the beginning of a new book, it didn’t slow down at all to establish the new setting, new characters, and a new motivation beyond “governments want to kill each other and that’s my job, so.” Without that New First Act legwork, I didn’t care about anything that was happening, after having been fully invested prior to that point.

It’s a doorstopper and could easily have been two books, so the decision to shortchange the transition frustrated the hell out of me.

  5. Bunnifur says:

A Darkness Absolute, the 2nd book in Kelley Armstrong’s Rockton (or Casey Duncan) series, is $2.99 at Amazon US. These books rarely go on sale and they’re usually expensive, but they’re very good. More a suspense/police procedural with a police force of three in a secret off-grid town in the Yukon for people who need to hide than strictly a romance, but there’s a central romance running through the books with an amazingly respectful hero (well, he respects the heroine a lot), and a homicide detective heroine who absolutely can kick ass and do her job well, sometimes in that order.

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I would definitely recommend reading BAD NEIGHBOR before reading BABY, COME BACK. The hero of BABY is the villain of NEIGHBOR. It’s interesting to see how IO’Keefe redeems the character.

  7. Lori says:

Conventionally Yours is SO good. I thought it would just be a light and fun romance, but it had some depth. I recommend it!

  8. Darlynne says:

Hart Hanson, the creator of the BONES TV series, wrote THE DRIVER, which is on sale today at Amazon for $1.99. It’s a thriller on one hand about a limousine service in LA, but it was the found-family of disabled veteran auto mechanics that grabbed me. It’s violent, funny and unexpected and I sincerely hope there’s more.

Another vote for Kelley Armstrong’s Rockton series. I bought all the titles on sale previously.

@RenBenton: I cannot disagree with your assessment of THE POPPY WAR at all. I finished it, but as you said, the second half went in another direction. I have not picked up the next title because the atrocities, while based on historical fact, were just too much for me.

A Duke by Any Other Name (Rouges to Riches book 4) by Grace Burrowes is $1.99 at Amazon, BN, Kobo.

  11. Heather M says:

I loved The Poppy War and it’s first sequel (I’m not sure if the last of the trilogy is out yet and I’m even less sure I could handle it in 2020, but I do plan to read it…eventually). It is VERY dark but I found it incredibly compelling and I was fascinated by Rin’s characterization. It’s definitely a YMMV book but I thought it was excellent.

  12. TH says:

Huge fan of the Beverly Jenkins book. It’s the second book in a trilogy but so good.

  13. Katie says:

Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen (first True North book) is free right now – I think it’s everywhere.

  14. Cristie says:

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers is on sale for $2.99 at Amazon. I’ve seen the series recommended on the site before and recently got the first book on sale too.

  15. Jessi says:

The Poppy War is the book that really made me understand how important content warnings are – when I picked up the book, I only read the description on the back cover, and therefore was completely unprepared for how intense and graphic the sexual violence would be. My advice is to proceed with caution.

Carrie G says: The cover of Fling Club makes my back hurt and I want to tell the young man to “Roll your shoulders back, you’re ruining your posture! I can recommend a chiropractor.”

I want to tell him to find the right body for his head, because I don’t think that’s it.
