  • Serpent & Dove

Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

PODCAST RECOMMENDED: Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin is $3.99! This was recently recommended on our podcast episode with Sarah J. Maas and it definitely seems of interest to romance readers. It’s a YA fantasy with a marriage of convenience between a secret witch and a witch hunter.

For her sixteenth birthday, Louise le Blanc’s mother gave her three things: a sacrificial altar, a ritual knife, and a wicked scar.

Lou’s death would have ended the ancient war between the Church and witches, but Lou refuses to become a martyr. Forsaking her coven, she escapes to the gloomy city of Cesarine and hides her magic as a thief in the criminal underworld. But life in Cesarine has its own dangers. Huntsmen roam the city revered as holy men. Witches burn without trial. And the Archbishop, the Church’s austere patriarch, revels in violence.

As a huntsman, Reid Diggory lives by one verse: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

He’s devoted his entire life to eradicating the occult and making his surrogate father, the Archbishop, proud. Finally given the chance to capture a witch of his own, Reid is devastated when a foul-mouthed thief thwarts him—and doubly devastated when she too disappears. Hell-bent on bringing her to justice, Reid vows she won’t escape again. But when Lou tricks him into public scandal trying to avoid capture, the two are forced into an impossible situation—marriage.

Marriage to a huntsman could provide real protection from the witches—if Lou can convince Reid she isn’t one herself. The secret proves difficult to keep as Lou begins practicing magic in secret within the heart of the Church, determined to prepare for her mother’s inevitable return. As time passes, however, Lou discovers yet another danger lurking: her own growing feelings for her husband. But Reid is still dangerous. He’s just as likely to tie her to the stake as defend her if he learns her true identity. With enemies closing in—and more than her own life at stake—Lou must decide who she can trust before it’s too late…and she’s not the only one with a secret.

  • The Vine Witch

The Vine Witch by Luanne Smith

The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith is $1.99 at Amazon! I’m obsessed with the moody florals of this cover. I saw one review that was disappointed the description didn’t overtly mention this was a romance novel. GOD FORBID.

A young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley.

  • Perdition

    Perdition by Ann Aguirre

Perdition by Ann Aguirre is $2.99! This is the first book in the Dred Chronicles series. I haven’t read this series, but I enjoyed Aguirre’s similar Sirantha Jax series. This is science fiction with some romantic elements, but with more of a focus on action. Some readers thought the male character was too perfect at everything, while others recommend this to readers who loved the show Prison Break.

    WELCOME TO HELL

The prison ship Perdition, a floating city where the Conglomerate’s most dangerous criminals are confined for life, orbits endlessly around a barren asteroid.

Life inside is even more bleak. Hailed as the Dread Queen, inmate Dresdemona “Dred” Devos controls one of Perdition’s six territories, bordered on both sides by would-be kings eager to challenge her claim. Keeping them at bay requires constant vigilance, as well as a steady influx of new recruits to replace the fallen. Survival is a constant battle, and death is the only escape.

Of the newest convicts, only one is worth Dred’s attention. The mercenary Jael, with his deadly gaze and attitude, may be the most dangerous criminal onboard. His combat skill could give her the edge she needs, if he doesn’t betray her first. Unfortunately, that’s what he does best. Winning Jael’s allegiance will be a challenge, but failure could be worse than death…

  • Rebel Belle

    Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins is $1.99! This is the first book in a series of the same name. It’s giving me some heavy Buffy vibes, but with Southern debutantes. Also, do yourself a favor and check out our podcast episode with Rachel. It’s fantastic!

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper’s destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can’t get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she’s charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper’s least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him–and discovers that David’s own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y’all beg for more.

  1. MirandaB says:

Jessie Mihalik’s Aurora Blazing is 1.99 at Amazon. This is usually 11.99, so a good deal. Polaris Rising was really popular here.

  2. Darlynne says:

PERDITION was very good, darker than Aguirre’s Sirantha Jax series. Lots of action and violence on a prison ship. How do you negotiate/navigate a brutal system with warring factions and retain your humanity? I thought the book was well done.

  3. Julia says:

@MirandaB – I was just coming here to say that! I was just browsing Amazon for other things, and ended up going to Jesse Mihalik’s page and saw the $1.99 price. I didn’t love Polaris Rising as much as others here (I really don’t like one POV narratives), but for that price, I will dive back into the Consortium!

  4. MirandaB says:

@Julia: Yeah, it didn’t change my life or anything, but I liked it ok, and for $1.99, I will certainly read book 2. She had a good world-build.

  5. Isua says:

THANK YOU for telling me about Aurora Blazing! I’ve been looking at Amazon every so often for it, waiting for it to go on sale, and it never did and now yippee I’ve just one-clicked it so hard. I enjoyed Polaris Rising, and was really intrigued by the first chapter of Aurora included at its end, and have been waiting waiting waiting. Woo hoo!

  6. Maite says:

Joining Isua with the THANK YOU for Aurora Blazing heads up.
Really liked Polaris Rising, and Aurora Blazing totally seemed my catnip.

  7. Heather P says:

I really enjoyed The Vine Witch. Historical fiction with a strong streak of magical realism and yes…. horrors!…. romance.

  8. Alexandra says:

Just read Perdition this weekend, loved the trilogy. The world building was really done and there’s definitely a romance arc through the three books, but idk if I’d describe just the first one as a romance novel. Loved the characters though and I agree that it was dark but thought it was also relevant with how we treat people who go to prisons.

  9. Kit says:

The Vine Witch is on Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading in the UK.

  10. Big K says:

It is in the U.S., too.

  11. OK says:

Perdition (and the whole trilogy) was so good! Very dark, but I loved it.
