Even though at first I found this book to be slow going, I came to appreciate it for its intersectional feminism and its unabashed adoration of all the science and math that goes into making space flight possible.
A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s efforts to colonize space, as well as an unprecedented opportunity for a much larger share of humanity to take part.
One of these new entrants in the space race is Elma York, whose experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition’s attempts to put man on the moon. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too—aside from some pesky barriers like thousands of years of history and a host of expectations about the proper place of the fairer sex. Dreamer’s Pool
Dreamer’s Pool by Juliet Marillier is $1.99! This is the first book in the Blackthorn & Grim series and at Book Lover’s Con last year (was it last year?), Nita highly recommended it to me! I love Marillier’s writing and world building, but at times, the books can venture into boring territory. Any other Marillier fans out there?

No Earls Allowed by Shana Galen is $1.99! This is the second book in the Survivors series and seems to have hints of a renovation romance, though I’m not positive how much of a role that plays. Some readers felt the heroine was a bit naive, while others recommend this for a rather sweet romance.

Roni Loren’s The Ones Who Got Away series is currently on sale – the first one’s free, the second two are $1.99 and $2.99, and the fourth, which came out in January, is about $6 but also in KU. This is one of my favorite series of the past few years – the way Loren describes the myriad ways in which trauma has lasting effects is both beautiful and heartbreaking. I know these have been recommended many times here before, but seriously, the first one is free!

Mr. Hotshot CEO by Jackie Lau is currently free. Also free is The Agency: A Spy in the House by Y.S. Lee, while Allegiance of Honor, book 15 of Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling series (the wrap-up of the first series arc) is currently $1.99. That sale triggered a happy dance because I just finished the book prior to it (Shards of Hope) and was debating how long I should hold off before I broke down and got this.

Yes!! I love Juliet Marillier books. I re-read SON OF THE SHADOWS at least twice a year because I adore a well-written, truly-tortured hero. Her stories are so layered and complex and masterfully told. (I do sometimes skim a teeny tiny bit through the slower, super-descriptive detailed parts to get to the FEELS but never on the first read). Bran’s journey from a woman-hating leader of a band of rebel outcasts to a man who finally trusts and deeply respects his partner breaks my heart anew every single time. I have a bunch of Juliet’s books waiting to be picked up at the library but it’s closed due to lockdown and I can’t get my hands on them. So thank you for the sale alert! Got it loaded on my kindle and ready to go!
I love the Blackthorne and Grimm series by Juliet Marillier. It is really well done, a little grim to start, but once you get past the beginning Blackthorne’s magical bargain becomes a great way to frame the story and acts as a clever personal dilemma for her. And Grimm is perfect as her devoted protector. Very slow burn on the emotional front, but the payoff (in the final book) is worth it.
Apparently I purchased “The Winter Sea” YEARS ago based off a previous SBTB recommendation and it is buried in my Kindle TBR pile.
Guess I need to read it because I tried to purchase it again.
I really enjoyed both The Calculating Stars and its (first) sequel, The Fated Sky. Book 3, The Relentless Moon, is due out in July.
