Wow, These Dang Sales!

  • The Right Swipe

    The Right Swipe

RECOMMENDED: The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai is $1.99! Maya read this one and gave is an A:

The Right Swipe is an amazing, well written story about two people of color falling in love as they come to terms with how the physical, psychological, and emotional traumas they experienced continue to affect them both. It was also, for me, a quiet little moment where I felt my existence was acknowledged.

Alisha Rai returns with the first book in her sizzling new Modern Love series, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom.

Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules:

    – Nude pics are by invitation only

    – If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice

    – Protect your heart

Only there aren’t any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night… and disappears.

Rhi thought she’d buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautiful—and in league with a business rival. He says he won’t fumble their second chance, but she’s wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely that’s too high a risk…

  • Whiteout

    Whiteout by Adriana Anders

Whiteout by Adriana Anders is 99c! I’m so surprised because this book just came out at the end of January and marks a brand new series from Anders. A few of my reader friends have rated this 5-stars on Goodreads, while other reviews felt the second half of the book didn’t match their enjoyment of the first half.

Angel Smith is finally ready to leave Antarctica for a second chance at life. But on what was meant to be her last day, the remote research station she’s been calling home is attacked. Hunted and scared, she and irritatingly gorgeous glaciologist Ford Cooper barely make it out with their lives…only to realize that in a place this remote, there’s nowhere left to run.

Isolated with no power, no way to contact the outside world, and a madman at their heels, Angel and Ford must fight to survive in the most inhospitable—and beautiful—place on earth. But what starts as a partnership born of necessity quickly turns into an urgent connection that burns bright and hot. They both know there is little chance of making it out alive, and yet they are determined to survive against the odds—and possibly, the world.

  • American Love Story

American Love Story by Adriana Herrera

American Love Story by Adriana Herrera is 99c! Shana reviewed this contemporary romance and gave it a B-:

I liked most of the characters inhabiting this story and have been hungering for the themes of this book, especially assessing the importance of political action against personal attraction. I felt safe in this book from the very first page when Patrice’s locs, spelled correctly, are described.

No one should have to choose between love and justice.

Haitian-born professor and activist Patrice Denis is not here for anything that will veer him off the path he’s worked so hard for. One particularly dangerous distraction: Easton Archer, the assistant district attorney who last summer gave Patrice some of the most intense nights of his life, and still makes him all but forget they’re from two completely different worlds.

All-around golden boy Easton forged his own path to success, choosing public service over the comforts of his family’s wealth. With local law enforcement unfairly targeting young men of color, and his career—and conscience—on the line, now is hardly the time to be thirsting after Patrice again. Even if their nights together have turned into so much more.

For the first time, Patrice is tempted to open up and embrace the happiness he’s always denied himself. But as tensions between the community and the sheriff’s office grow by the day, Easton’s personal and professional lives collide. And when the issue at hand hits closer to home than either could imagine, they’ll have to work to forge a path forward…together.

  • Getting Schooled

    Getting Schooled by Emma Chase

Getting Schooled by Emma Chase is 99c at Amazon! It’s available at other vendors, but not at the sale price. For the most part, I enjoy Chase’s writing and the balance of humor and romance. I haven’t read this one, though, and people mentioned that the friendships and teacher/student dynamics were the best part. However, the romance was rather weak.

The newest novel from New York Times bestselling author Emma Chase.

    Head of the class…

Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out.

The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and “cool” teacher in the hometown where he’s not just a golden boy — he’s platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle.

    Then…Callie Carpenter comes home.

And knocks him right on his tight end zone.

    Back to school…

Callie has a pretty sweet life herself…on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she’d prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school.

Now she’s facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore…and that’s just the teachers.

    Just like old times…

When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance – and then has to stop herself from jumping him.

Good friends are all they can ever be.

Or…these teachers just might end up getting schooled — by love.

Every single moment of reading The Right Swipe made me feel happy and warm and delighted and giggly. Plus it’s smart, savvy, and full of important and timely social commentary about a variety of topics from #MeToo to the NFL’s refusal to deal with the harsh realities of repeated concussions.

The Right Swipe has become the bar by which I measure all other romances. It comes with quite literally my highest recommendation.

  2. Todd says:

The Getting Schooled cover could be a modern version on the historical covers with shirts tucked in but not buttoned … a possible Cover Snark entry (modern versions of period snark subjects).

  3. Chris says:

Really excited about the Right Swipe and Whiteout sales!!! Which to read first?!!

Sourcebooks has a bunch of freebies this month – including Puppy Love by Lucy Gilmore (loved it – Pomeranian puppy service dog and grumpy wildland fire fighter) and Love and Let Spy (the kind of ridiculous, don’t-care-if-it-could-have-happened sort of historical that I like for comfort reading – the heroine is Jane Bond). And like 15 more free ones! I picked up Crazy Cupid Love by Amanda Hegeris – it got a middling review here but the book description intrigues me.

Also – speaking of ridiculous fun historicals – Tessa Dare’s Romancing the Duke (LARPers!) is $1.99 with a new ebook cover (so make sure you don’t already have). I think I like the new cover – it fits with her historical rom com tone and the cartoon heroine’s hair reminds me of when the visually impaired hero told her it looks like an octopus on her head.

  4. Karin says:

Elizabeth Essex’s first two books in her Reckless Brides series are on sale everywhere for $2.99, “Almost a Scandal” and “A Breath of Scandal”(a pre-release sale). I read them in print years ago, but these are e-book re-releases. I loved them so much I’ll probably get them all. Both have heroes who are in the British Navy, so lots of stuff about ships. Think Carla Kelly but with sex. The first one has a cross-dressing heroine who is quite believable as a midshipman.

  5. Emily B says:

Tempted to buy Whiteout by it looks like my library hold will come in in the next 2 weeks.

I really enjoyed Getting Schooled. I didn’t find the romance weak so much as without much conflict, but I loved the interaction between the two teacher main characters and their students. Sometimes low angst is nice.

  6. Darlynne says:

@Chris, thanks for mentioning the Sourcebooks sale. I picked up some new-to-me authors.

  7. Leigh Kramer says:

Loved both Whiteout and American Love Story! They were 5 star reads for me. I, too, was very surprised to see Whiteout was on sale already. I can see why the publisher would want to give it a lift but it sends a bad message to readers who preordered at regular price.

  8. JenM says:

I believe the sale on Whiteout is for today only because Sourcebooks has chosen it for their inaugural bookclub, so if you want it, don’t delay. I rarely read romantic suspense, but hello, Antarctica setting? That was an immediate one-click. I’ve also read and enjoyed the author’s Blank Canvas series.

  9. Lisa F says:

    @Chris – I loved Crazy Cupid Love!

A lot of great selections here; Puppy Love is also terrific, Glimore’s whole series is fun.

  10. Patricia says:

Can someone tell me how to get to the free books at sourcebooks. I’ve never been there but was intrigued by the discussion so created an account. When I went to shop and put in puppy love all I got was the eight dollar print addition.

  11. Carole says:

@Chris how do you find the books from sourcebooks on sale? I checked out their website and couldn’t find any lists.

  12. DianaW says:

Sourcebooks does this so often — releases a book at full price and then puts it on sale not much later — they’ve basically taught me never to buy on the release day (and I imagine many readers on a budget often feel cheated). I really wonder what the thinking is behind that.

  13. JenM says:

Here is the link to the Sourcebooks sale page (not sure if this will be clickable but if not you can copy and paste it into your browser). You don’t have to create an account there. All of the books are free at the various retail sites like Amazon and Kobo.

  14. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I had set aside money in my January book budget to purchase WHITEOUT, but had so many books on my January list, I didn’t get around to buying it…and I’m glad I didn’t, because I snapped it up yesterday for 99-cents—but I would be upset right now if I’d paid full price for it less than a month ago when I could have waited a few weeks and bought it for less than a dollar (when it was originally $4.99). What sort of marketing strategy is that?

Btw, for those who don’t know, there is a prequel to WHITEOUT titled DEEP BLUE. It’s in an anthology called TURN THE TIDE which was free in the Kindle Store the last time I checked. The heroes of the two books are brothers, iirc.

@Todd: I think the cover model for GETTING SCHOOLED might be my alternate-universe boyfriend, Zack Salaun (aka, ANTON), with his tattoos air-brushed out and something fucked-up done to his hair. The book doesn’t credit the cover model but the photographer is Wander Aguiar and I know he’s photographed Zack for many covers in the past.
