  • The Ones Who Got Away

The Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren

RECOMMENDEDThe Ones Who Got Away by Roni Loren is $1.99! This romance came out last year and I really enjoyed it and its portrayal of people living with trauma. I gave it a B+, but as it deals with victims of gun violence, I completely understand why readers may want to avoid it.

If the subject matter doesn’t scare you off and your catnip is friends to lovers, slow burn-y goodness, The Ones Who Got Away is highly worth the read.

It’s been twelve years since tragedy struck the senior class of Long Acre High School. Only a few students survived that fateful night—a group the media dubbed The Ones Who Got Away.

Liv Arias thought she’d never return to Long Acre—until a documentary brings her and the other survivors back home. Suddenly her old flame, Finn Dorsey, is closer than ever, and their attraction is still white-hot. When a searing kiss reignites their passion, Liv realizes this rough-around-the-edges cop might be exactly what she needs…

  • The Untouchable Earl

The Untouchable Earl by Amy Sandas

The Untouchable Earl by Amy Sandas is $1.99! This is a historical romance with a hero who hates to be touched and a heroine who’s been auctioned off at a pleasure house. Readers enjoyed the hero, but found that his aversion to touch was overcome rather easily. This is the second book in the Fallen Ladies series and can be read as a standalone. However, the first book is FREE and the third book is only $2.99.

He’s a reclusive Earl with a painful secret that’s kept him from knowing a lover’s touch. She’s a sheltered debutante tired of living by society’s rules. But when she’s forced from the ballroom to the brothel, Lily discovers the dark thrill of falling from grace…and into the arms of a man who could destroy her as easily as he saved her.

Lily Chadwick has spent her life playing the respectable debutante. But when an unscrupulous moneylender snatches her off the street and puts her up for auction at a pleasure house, she finds herself in the possession of a man who fills her with breathless terror and impossible yearning.

Though the Earl of Harte claimed Lily with the highest bid, he hides a painful secret―one that has kept him from knowing the pleasure of a lover’s touch. Even the barest brush of skin brings him physical pain, and he’s spent his life keeping the world at arm’s length. But there’s something about Lily that maddens him, bewitches him, compels him…and drives him toward the one woman brave and kind enough to heal his troubled heart.

  • Tangled in Texas

Tangled in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell

Tangled in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99! I mentioned this in February 2017’s Hide Your Wallet because it was recommended to me by a fellow romance reader. The first book in this series is free and the third book is $2.99. Readers enjoyed this emotional second chance romance, but others found the writing a bit dense.

It took 32 seconds to end his career.
But it only took 1 to change his life.

Thirty-two seconds. That’s how long it took for Delon Sanchez’s life to end. One minute he was the best bronc rider in the Panhandle and the next he was nothing. Knee shattered, future in question, all he can do is pull together the pieces…and wonder what cruel trick of fate has thrown him into the path of his ex, the oh-so-perfect Tori Patterson.

Tori’s come home after her husband’s death, intent on escaping the public eye. It’s just her luck that Delon limps into her physical therapy office, desperate for help. All hard-packed muscle and dark-eyed temptation, he’s never been anything but a bad idea. And yet, seeing him again, Tori can’t remember what made her choose foolish pride over love…or why, with this second, final chance to right old wrongs, the smartest choice would be to run from this gorgeous rodeo boy as fast as her boots can take her.

  • Run to Ground

Run to Ground by Katie Ruggle

Run to Ground by Katie Ruggle is $1.99! This is the first book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit romantic suspense series. Readers say the pacing was great and they would consider this a slow burn romance. However, some felt the ending didn’t resolve all the obstacles between the hero and heroine.

    He lost his mentor.
    He lost his K9 partner.
He almost lost his will to live.
But when a ruthless killer targets a woman on the run, Theo and his new K9 companion will do whatever it takes to survive—and save the woman neither can live without.

Grieving the death of his partner, Theo Bosco has no room in his life for distractions. Though his instincts scream that he should avoid Juliet ‘Jules’ Jackson, he can’t seem to stay away. It doesn’t help that Theo’s new K9 companion has fallen head over paws with Jules’s rambunctious family.

Or that when he’s with her, Theo finally knows peace.

When Jules rescued her siblings, whisking them away to the safety of the beautifully rugged Colorado Rockies, she never expected to catch the eye—or the heart—of a cop. Yet as Jules struggles to fight her growing attraction to the brooding K9 officer, another threat lurks much closer to home…

And this time, there’s no escape.

  1. Alexandra says:

Does anyone know anything about if/when the fourth book in the Roni Loren series is coming out? I thought I’d be able to at least pre order by now, but I’m not seeing anything about it on amazon or the author’s website.

  2. Amanda says:

@Alexandra: Goodreads is reporting that it’s due out at the end of December this year. It’ll be Kincaid’s book.

  3. MaryK says:

I DNF’d The Untouchable Earl for extreme anachronism. I held out for a while because the writing was good and the characters were interesting. The problem was that they were modern characters playing dress up. To me, the most egregious issue was that the heroine and her sisters were trying to repay their father’s 10,000 pound debt. The older sister thought she could win it at the gambling tables. 10,000 pounds. For perspective, the filthy rich Mr. Darcy’s annual income was 10,000 pounds.

I wanted to like the book, but the unbelievability kept piling up until I couldn’t take it any more. What finally tipped the balance for me was that in addition to a madam with a heart of gold, it started looking like the moneylender who kidnapped and sold the heroine to the madam was going to get his own book.

  4. Hope says:

@MaryK – Amanda Quick once had a heroine lose 1,000 pounds in a card game which I see from my Google is about 92,000 and I thought that was pretty wild. Looks like 10,000 would be about 920,000 today.

  5. SusanH says:

Sarina Bowen’s Bittersweet is free today on US Kindle. It’s the first in her True North series, which I love.

  6. Schmoo says:

That Kari Lynn Fell set is a steal at these prices! Respectful and balanced relationships feature in each, the writing is great, and the characters are interesting and rendered real. Highly recommended to anyone who is overestimated with toxic masculinity and emotional fuckwitism. I never thought I would be this excited about a modern cowboy series.

  7. Jill Marie says:

“The Ones Who Got Away” was a solid B for me as an audiobook. The narration was, to my Southern California ears, occasionally very jarring renditions of accents, and I was left pondering some things that I thought should have been addressed.

But someone said this is a series? So maybe what I thought was missing is included in later books.

  8. Lora says:

I dnf’d the Ones that Got Away.
I thought i could do it. But i work in a school. Too upsetting.

  9. Tolkitty says:

The Kari Lynn Dell books are keepers for me. I also read the first Roni Loren and am impatient for the next ones to go on sale. In contrast I tried a couple of Katie Ruggles (including this one on sale, Run to Ground) and found them to be DNF. Good potential but storytelling/writing were weak- I alternated between eye rolling at the character decisions and wanting to strangle the author for letting them down.

  10. I loved The Ones Who Got Away – good rec unless, as others have noted, the shooting scenario is too triggering. I started it in print and then ended up listening to audio and found it a solid audio read.

  11. Msb says:

“Forced from the ballroom to the brothel”!?!Barbara Cartland lives and writes again!
But thanks to this site, I got the whole Brothers Sinister series on sale and enjoyed it very much. I see more Courtney Milan in my future.
