  • The Calculating Stars

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which are all Goodreads Choice Award winners and finalists. Carrie read this one and gave it a B grade:

Even though at first I found this book to be slow going, I came to appreciate it for its intersectional feminism and its unabashed adoration of all the science and math that goes into making space flight possible.

A meteor decimates the U.S. government and paves the way for a climate cataclysm that will eventually render the earth inhospitable to humanity. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated timeline in the earth’s efforts to colonize space, as well as an unprecedented opportunity for a much larger share of humanity to take part.

One of these new entrants in the space race is Elma York, whose experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition’s attempts to put man on the moon. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn’t take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can’t go into space, too—aside from some pesky barriers like thousands of years of history and a host of expectations about the proper place of the fairer sex. And yet, Elma’s drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions may not stand a chance.

  • First to Burn

First to Burn by Anna Richland

First to Burn by Anna Richland is $1.99! This is the first book in her Immortal Vikings series and readers had mixed feelings about the hero. Many found him unique and loyal, but others remarked that he had a lot going on with his immortality and PTSD. This book has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

    A soldier with secrets

Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He’s trusted the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands Wulf in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.

    A doctor with questions

Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She’s determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won’t allow his sexy smile to distract her.

An enemy with nothing to lose

Even as Theresa’s investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf is stirred by her passion. Dreaming of love and a normal life, he wants nothing more than to build a future with her. But the lost Viking relic needed to reverse his immortality is being hunted by another—an ancient enemy who won’t hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.

  • The Good Girl

The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

RECOMMENDED: The Good Girl by Mary Kubica is $2.99! Elyse discussed this book in her post Good Girl, Gone Girl and Women in Psychological Thrillers. She wrote, “Parts of the novel takes place during the period of time of Mia’s disappearance and others take place after. The hook is that after her traumatic rescue, Mia cannot remember the months she spent with her abductor. I won’t ruin it for this audience, but the book is not the typical female-in-jeopardy situation.” So if you’re looking for thrillers, this might really work for you.

I’ve been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she works. I don’t know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she’s scared. But I will.

One night, Mia Dennett enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn’t show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. At first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia’s life.

When Colin decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota instead of delivering her to his employers, Mia’s mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them. But no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family’s world to shatter.

  • The Bourbon Thief

The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz

The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz is $2.99! This has been on my TBR for a while, but I haven’t pulled the trigger on reading it yet. Readers loved the mystery and all the twists and secrets to this book. However, others found the ending a bit anticlimactic after all the build up. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

From the internationally celebrated author of the Original Sinners series comes a brand-new tale of betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150-year-old mystery

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it’s to discover he’s been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it’s property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows…no one except Paris.

In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. But the family tree is rooted in tainted soil and has borne rotten fruit. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. The Maddoxes have bourbon in their blood—and blood in their bourbon. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed.

To quote one of my daughters, “Beowulf was not a Viking, he was a Geat.”

  2. Kareni says:

I enjoyed First to Burn; however, I REALLY liked the author’s His Road Home and have reread it a number of times. The hero and heroine of First to Burn make a very brief appearance in His Road Home; however, the latter has no paranormal element at all.

I didn’t care for First to Burn – I read His Road Home first and really loved it. First to Burn is the author’s first novel (I think) and it shows. There’s a LOT going on – enough for multiple books – and the plot and character development was kind of all over the place.

  4. Dreamingintrees says:

Good Girl has some problems with racism that led to me hating the book. The below review explains the issue well. Please note the review does have spoilers in it, but they can be avoided by reading only the first part, which describes the racism.

TW on The Burbon Thief for forced incest of a minor with the knowledge of the child’s mother.

    @Nina

Thanks, that’s not something I could read right now.

  7. Ken Houghton says:

The Calculating Stars was “slow going”? It’s a traditional Hard Science Fiction novel (in form), where we get action from the beginning and the danger never stops, except for the moments of taking care of family (mainly the uncle in Los Angeles in this book).
