Rogues, Vikings, & More

    Deadline by Stephanie Ahn

Deadline by Stephanie Ahn is $3.99! Now, this might be full price but I wanted to include it because it sounds fucking amazing. This is an urban fantasy with a Korean-American lesbian witch protagonist. Hi, yes, hello! I also love the cover. The description warns of some BDSM elements, which some reviewers thought was a bit of an unwelcome surprise.

Disgraced witch Harrietta Lee has made a lot of mistakes in her life; there’s a reason she’s got a sizable burn scar slapped across the side of her neck and a formal letter of excommunication from the international underground magical community. But who has time to dwell on the past when you’re trying to make rent in New York? Things are mostly clean and simple, until her next odd job is brought to her by a representative of a powerful corporate family—a family she once had close personal ties to. As she unwillingly digs through six years’ worth of personal baggage, she’s also got to contend with an inhuman admirer shadowing her in the street.

But hey, maybe it’ll be worth it for the beautiful women she gets to kiss…

    (Warning: Contains elements of BDSM)

  • A Rogue to Avoid

A Rogue to Avoid by Bianca Blythe

A Rogue to Avoid by Bianca Blythe is $2.99 at Amazon! This is a historical romance where a misunderstanding leads to marriage. Talk about awkward. Readers really seemed to enjoy the interaction between the hero and heroine. However, others found some things to be a bit unbelievable or inconsistent. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads. This is the second book in a series and the first one is also on free!

    A Scottish scoundrel…
Gerard Highgate, Marquess of Rockport and the ton’s most aloof rake, knows better than to wed an Englishwoman, especially one as prickly as Lady Cordelia. But when his mother dies and he finds himself saddled with her debts, he needs a wife and he needs one fast.

    An exacting Englishwoman…
Lady Cordelia knows that hastiness in husband hunting leads to mistakes. But when she visits an aristocrat to warn that his life might be in danger, he misinterprets her suggestion to flee to Scotland.

    An unexpected elopement…
Most elopements are born of love, not misunderstanding. Cordelia and Gerard have already broken that rule, but perhaps they can still make their marriage one of love.

  • First to Burn

First to Burn by Anna Richland

First to Burn by Anna Richland is 99c! This is the first book in her Immortal Vikings series and readers had mixed feelings about the hero. Many found him unique and loyal, but others remarked that he had a lot going on with his immortality and PTSD. This book has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

    A soldier with secrets

Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He’s trusted the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands Wulf in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.

    A doctor with questions

Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She’s determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won’t allow his sexy smile to distract her.

An enemy with nothing to lose

Even as Theresa’s investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf is stirred by her passion. Dreaming of love and a normal life, he wants nothing more than to build a future with her. But the lost Viking relic needed to reverse his immortality is being hunted by another—an ancient enemy who won’t hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.

  • The River Knows

The River Knows by Amanda Quick

The River Knows by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is a historical romance with mystery elements and is a standalone. Readers enjoyed the pacing and suspense elements. However, others wished they were more surprised by the mystery. Have you read this one?

From New York Times bestselling author of Amanda Quick comes a delightful romp filled with breathtaking suspense, dazzling wit, and steamy Victorian passion…

The first kiss occurred in a dimly-lit hallway on the upper floor of Elwin Hastings’s grand house. Louisa Bryce never saw it coming. Of course, handsome, wealthy Anthony Stalbridge couldn’t possibly have had romantic intentions. The kiss was merely meant to distract the armed guard about to catch the two unlikely sleuths. After all, the only thing these two interlopers have in common is a passionate interest in uncovering the dastardly secrets of Mr. Hastings—a prominent member of Society whom they suspect of murder.

Brought together by their desire for the truth, Anthony and Louisa finally discover the incriminating evidence they’re looking for. But bringing Hastings to justice will be more perilous than they anticipate, especially since their thrilling attraction to danger—and, it turns out, to each other—might very well get in the way…

  1. Anne says:

For some of us the BDSM “warning” on Deadline just made us one-click faster… But I was already sold at Koran-American lesbian witch protagonist.

  2. Anne Ellis says:

    Korean-American, obviously. That’s what I get for cut-and-pasting.

  3. Amanda says:

@Anne Ellis: Well now I feel dumb. Fixed the misspelling!

  4. Kareni says:

I read First to Burn after encountering Wulf and Theresa in the author’s His Road Home. I found it an enjoyable read, but His Road Home is by far my favorite.

  5. Ginger says:

I just reread First to Burn for “reread a favorite book” in the SBTB challenge. I am obviously going to recommend that you one-click! I also loved His Road Home, but the two books are very different. I’m hoping that Anna Richland is working on a third Immortal Vikings story.

  6. MaryK says:

I really liked The River Knows. The Publishers Weekly description calls it a “romantic mystery” so that might be where the dissatisfaction with the mystery aspect comes from. It’s historical romance and not really meant to be a mystery novel.

  7. Hope says:

I started First to Burn but I didn’t get very far simply because it was odd. The heroine’s reactions to everything were so extreme. All her emotional responses were so out of proportion to what had happened that it just seemed weird. If I remember correctly, it wasn’t just her. Everyone in the book seemed to be reacting to something different from what was actually happening and the disconnect made it hard to read.

  8. DonnaMarie says:

Anna Richland and JAK? Oh, yes the book budget be damned.

  9. kat_blue says:

    (Warning: Contains elements of BDSM)
Like…what? One light tap to the tush, but we’re calling it spanking? Full-body bondage, suspended by hooks from the ceiling all day, while a coven of sadistic dommes psychologically dissect the heroine’s mind in excruciating detail? Forced seduction, but you’re supposed to know it’s a fantasy for the reader’s pleasure? That’s so vague a description I’ve got no idea what to expect.
Even reading the Amazon reviews isn’t helping, they all just say “there’s a scene that contains BDSM” “there’s a sexy BDSM scene”
Before I buy, I want to know if this is something I’ll think is hot, something totally not, something I’ll be neutral about, or something that will trigger the **** out of me.

  10. Deborah says:

Murder in Retribution is a 1.99 Kindle Daily Deal. This is the second book in Anne Cleeland’s Doyle and Acton series, and should not be read before the first (Murder in Thrall). Stalker hero. Twee Irish heroine. Slytherin/Hufflepuff pairing. I’m in it for the cracktastic romance, but (currently on book 5) I’m also really impressed with how the ominous narrative is building as the series progresses. I hope Cleeland has an endgame in mind.

  11. Thank you for mentioning the sale on First to Burn! I’m sorry to say, as of Saturday 8/18, it appears to be over — in my experience, when HarperCollins/Avon/Harlequin puts books on sale, it’s often a very short time. So if you see any you like, you should buy quickly. (And the authors have little to no control over sales timing, unfortunately). But thank you!!!

  12. Maureen says:

@AnnaRichland-how wonderful to see you here! I am loving your books!! I’m halfway through the second book in the Immortal Vikings series, and I’m almost afraid to go on, in case anything bad happens to Stig and Christina!! His Road Home was the first book of yours I’ve read-2 days ago-and what a wonderful story!

Will there be more Viking stories?? Please say yes 🙂

Also, I missed the sales, but was happy to pay the other price!

  13. Thanks Maureen! I’m on here pretty regularly. I’m glad you’re enjoying my stories – to be honest, I’ve been struggling to finish what I start writing. I’ve produced lots of books where the bad guys all started sounding like politicians, and lots of very, very angry books, which isn’t what I want to write. I’m in the final stages of a very insulated-from-reality erotic story, which I hope will push me back into finishing and publishing … in a perfect world, I’d have two more Immortal Viking books in the series. Hopefully sometime in late 2019 I’ll have one of them finished.

  14. Maureen says:

@AnnaRichland-I can’t imagine how hard it must be creative in these tough times. I do want to say how much I do appreciate your books, I laughed out loud so many times reading The Second Lie-you have a wonderful way with a story!
