    Author: Tiffany Schmidt
Released: May 1, 2018 by Amulet Books
    Genre: ,
    Series: Bookish Boyfriends #1

Boys are so much better in books. At least according to Merrilee Campbell, fifteen, who thinks real-life chivalry is dead and there’d be nothing more romantic than having a guy woo her like the heroes in classic stories. Then she, her best friend, Eliza, and her younger sister, Rory, transfer to Reginald R. Hero Prep—where all the boys look like they’ve stepped off the pages of a romance novel. Merri can hardly walk across the quad without running into someone who reminds her of Romeo.

When the brooding and complicated Monroe Stratford scales Merri’s trellis in an effort to make her his, she thinks she might be Juliet incarnate. But as she works her way through her literature curriculum under the guidance of an enigmatic teacher, Merri’s tale begins to unfold in ways she couldn’t have imagined. Merri soon realizes that only she is in charge of her story. And it is a truth universally acknowledged that first impressions can be deceiving . . .

Elyse says: Combine the words bookish + boyfriend + Darcy and you can just take my money.

  • The Poppy War

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

    Author: R.F. Kuang
Released: May 1, 2018 by Harper Voyager
    Genre:

When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

    But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.

Amanda says: This is one of my most anticipated titles of 2018.

  • The Way You Make Me Feel

The Way You Make Me Feel by Maurene Goo

    Author: Maurene Goo
Released: May 8, 2018 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)
    Genre: ,

From the author of I Believe in a Thing Called Love, a laugh-out-loud story of love, new friendships, and one unique food truck.

Clara Shin lives for pranks and disruption. When she takes one joke too far, her dad sentences her to a summer working on his food truck, the KoBra, alongside her uptight classmate Rose Carver. Not the carefree summer Clara had imagined. But maybe Rose isn’t so bad. Maybe the boy named Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) crushing on her is pretty cute. Maybe Clara actually feels invested in her dad’s business. What if taking this summer seriously means that Clara has to leave her old self behind? With Maurene Goo’s signature warmth and humor, The Way You Make Me Feel is a relatable story of falling in love and finding yourself in the places you’d never thought to look.

Elyse says: This YA summer romance looks delightful!

  • Nothing Happened

    Nothing Happened by Molly Booth

    Author: Molly Booth
Released: May 15, 2018 by Disney Hyperion
    Genre: , ,

    IT’S MUCH ADO . . . ABOUT EVERYTHING.

This modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing takes place at the idyllic Camp Dogberry, where sisters Bee and Hana Leonato have lived their whole lives. Their parents own the place, and every summer they look forward to leading little campers in crafts, swimming in the lake, playing capture the flag and sproutball, and of course, throwing legendary counselor parties.

This year, the camp drama isn’t just on the improv stage. Bee and longtime counselor Ben have a will-they-or-won’t-they romance that’s complicated by events that happened—or didn’t happen—last summer. Meanwhile, Hana is falling hard for the kind but insecure Claudia, putting them both in the crosshairs of resident troublemaker John, who spreads a vicious rumor that could tear them apart.

As the counselors juggle their camp responsibilities with simmering drama that comes to a head at the Fourth of July sparkler party, they’ll have to swallow their pride and find the courage to untangle the truth, whether it leads to heartbreak or happily ever after

Sarah says: A queer retelling of Much Ado About Nothing set at a summer camp. If that isn’t a most pleasant assemblage of words, I don’t know what to tell you.

    Genre:
Series: A Paper Magician Novel #4

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg returns to the enchanting world of The Paper Magician.

Even though she is only an apprentice, Alvie is an inventor at heart, and she is determined to make as many discoveries—in as short a time frame—as she can. Luckily for her, she’s studying under the world-renowned magician Marion Praff, who is just as dedicated as Alvie is.

Alvie’s enthusiasm reinvigorates her mentor’s work, and together they create a device that could forever change Polymaking—and the world. But when a rival learns of their plans, he conspires to steal their invention and take the credit for it himself.

To thwart him, Alvie will need to think one step ahead. For in the high-stakes world of magical discovery, not everyone plays fair…

Sarah says: I read the first one in this series and this is the fourth, but do I let such things stop me? Ha! Not a bit! I know some of you are cringing – I’m sorry. The heroine of this story is a young American Polymaker, a magician of plastic, which is a new field in that world, and I’m very curious.

  • Making Up

    Making Up by Lucy Parker

    Author: Lucy Parker
Released: May 28, 2018 by Carina Press
    Genre: ,
    Series: London Celebrities #3

Author of Act Like It and Pretty Face Lucy Parker returns readers to the West End, where it’s fireworks onstage and off in a sexy enemies-to-lovers showdown.

Once upon a time, circus artist Trix Lane was the best around. Her spark vanished with her confidence, though, and reclaiming either has proved…difficult. So when the star of The Festival of Masks is nixed and Trix is unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight, it’s exactly the push she needs. But the joy over her sudden elevation in status is cut short by a new hire on the makeup team.

Leo Magasiva: disgraced wizard of special effects. He of the beautiful voice and impressive beard. Complete dickhead and—in an unexpected twist—an enragingly good kisser.

To Leo, something about Trix is…different. Lovely. Beautiful, even though the pint-size, pink-haired former bane of his existence still spends most of her waking hours working to annoy him. They’ve barely been able to spend two minutes together for years, and now he can’t get enough of her. On stage. At home. In his bed.

When it comes to commitment, Trix has been there, done that, never wants to do it again. Leo’s this close to the job of a lifetime, which would take him away from London—and from Trix. Their past is a constant barrier between them.

    It seems hopeless.

    Utterly impossible.

    And yet…

Sarah says: There’s the word “Lucy” and then the word “Parker,” and it comes out on my anniversary so it’s like it is a GIFT JUST FOR ME (I’m so freaking excited I am unable to can or can-can at this time).

I raced through Callie Hart’s DIRTY over the weekend and it was fantastic (also my nominee for sexiest cover of the year, so far) until I got to the last few pages and wondered how she was going to pull together all the plot lines so rapidly. I got to the last page and….NOOOOO!—cliffhanger ending!! The afterword says the second book is due in May, but I haven’t seen any reference to it on Hart’s site or other places. I’m looking forward to that book—whenever it might make an appearance.

  3. Lora says:

YAAAS! The Court books by Maas are insanely good. The heroine is fierce and loyal and slightly misanthropic. The guy, whew…it’s hot in here.

  4. Deborah says:

Tantor Media is busily releasing audio editions of Jayne Anne Krentz’s contemporary backlist. (Seriously, these books are 25 years old. Her “romance classics backlist”?) I’m excited for FAMILY MAN (available May 8) and WILDEST HEARTS (available May 29). Family Man is one of my favorite JAK romances, and I really enjoyed the narrator’s (Amy McFadden) performance of Camille Monk’s Spotless series. Fave book + talented narrator = win!

The second Murderbot book! FINALLY. That’s Artificial Condition by Martha Wells.

The fifth book in the True North series by Sarina Bowen will be out on the 29th. It’s called Speakeasy and it’s (fittingly) May’s book. I was really hoping for f/f for her but what can you do…

  6. Joanna says:

    @Frida. Yes for Murderbot 2 – can’t wait!

Also, can I just comment that these type of lists here at SB seem to be more heavily weighted to YA lately? Is this a conscious change in direction? I recognize that publishers and others are pushing YA hard, but as someone who has been reading romance and other genres for a very (not sayin’ how long but a loong time) I look for interesting adult books and I feel like they are being edged out in a lot of places by YA. Just wondering?

  7. Latest book from Mariah Stewart has got me excited 🙂

  8. @Amanda says:

@Joanna: It’s not a conscious change. It’s purely coincidental that there are times when some of us have more YA releases we’re excited about than romances.

For me personally, a lot of the YA books I’m looking forward to have romance subplots. And I adore fantasy, paranormal, and scifi, but finding a new romance that falls into those subgenres is tough for me.

  9. Mona says:

I like romance in my scifi or fantasy books, so technically YA should tick a lot of boxes, except for the YA part. I feel romance novels often already have too young protagonists, and YA skews by definition even younger. But I have pretty much no interest in reading about the romantic problems in that age group and/or love triangles and protagonists often come across as rather simplistic. To me YA books seem often generated by mad-lib worldbuilding and lack substance.

As a chemist am really intrigued by the plastic wizard one – chemistry is the closest we have to magic after all – how heavy are those books on the actual magic-science and internal logic?

  10. Betsydub says:

Amanda – thanks for the explanation re: @Joanna’s question about the seeming skew towards YA this month. What I noticed along with that is that there’s none of the usual end-of-month historicals. At first I thought that was because of Memorial Day, but the 29th is a Tuesday, so that doesn’t work (for me). Do Avon, Forever, Zebra, Sourcebooks, etc. take the month off from historicals? Or is this related to the big Reno-fest in May? What gives? Thanks.

  11. DonnaMarie says:

Looking forward to the books from long time favorites, NR & JAK, but also Graeme Simsion’s Two Steps Forward and the third book in Lauren Dane’s Whiskey Sharp trilogy, Torn.

  12. Joanna says:

@Mona Yes, exactly!! I feel like publishers slap a really pretty cover on a book (seriously, why do some of the YA’s have the prettiest covers?) and call it YA and figure it will sell even if it’s as thin as cardboard. And yes, I have no time for some of the romantic silliness of much of what is published for that genre. It’s not that the protagonists are young, it’s that the reader is written down to.

  13. Mary Ann says:

I am so excited for Court of release (which I might read tonight as I pre-ordered so I know it is on my kindle) and From Twinkle with Love since When Dimple Met Rishi was pretty much my favorite palate cleanser in the past 6 months – I read it after The Female of the Species which was OUT-F*&#ing- STANDING but so intense (both reviewed somewhere on this site I think). But I am also looking forward to the third in Kristen Ashley’s Honey series after reading Scandalicious review of it this morning. I keep telling myself I should hate KA heroes but I just can’t seem to do so.
Finally Grumpy Fake Boyfriend is beyond catnip for me – my heart started fluttering when I saw the title because hello?? all my favorite things. Grumpy hero – check, fake boyfriend trope – check. Yippee

  14. Theresa says:

Was checking my Amazon preorders and I have 4 books arriving on May 28/29, including the Lucy parker one. Cant wait!!!

  15. LauraL says:

@ BetsyDub – My Duke book wish list is sparse for this month, so maybe something is going on.

I am looking forward to No Dukes Allowed which comes out May 15, but I think I’ll save it for Memorial Day weekend reading. Novellas by Grace Burrowes, Kelly Bowen, and Anna Harrington around three young ladies who rent a seaside residence to get away from matchmaking and gossip. We all know how that will work out!

  16. Holly says:

I’ve read Monday’s Not Coming and it was amazing, heart wrenching, ovary kicking awesome.

  17. ReneeG says:

Lots to look forward to this month! New Faith Hunter/Jane Yellowrock came out today (Dark Queen). And did I miss Mary Balogh’s new Westcott series, Someone to Care – it’s coming out this month, right?

  18. Susan says:

Dark Queen, the latest book in Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series, was released today.

Things have been difficult at work for awhile and I’ve been frustrated and burned out. My boss surprised me by emailing me this morning and said, “It’s beautiful outside today. Why don’t you take the day off?” He didn’t have to ask twice! I’ve been reading and napping (accompanied by the cat) with the doors/windows open and it felt absolutely decadent!

  19. Kareni says:

I’ve seen titles above that I’m looking forward to. I’m also looking forward to Thea Harrison’s new short about Pia and Dragos and to new books by Mary Balogh and Carla Kelly.

  20. Emily says:

All of these look so good! Also, I finally got around to reading the first two Lucy Parker books and they’re wonderful! In some ways they seem kind of old-fashioned, like if Rosemary Pilcher books had heroes that acknowledged sexism existed.

  21. Crystal says:

My husband: “You didn’t tell me you had a book coming out today.” (I had preordered A Court of Frost and Starlight, because I love that series.) Me: “Oh, wait until the 28th and 29th. Gonna be a bloodbath.” In that two days, I will have my hands on LIFELIK3 by Jay Kristoff, Shelter In Place by Nora Roberts, and Making Up by Lucy Parker. Make it rain, bay-bee.

  22. julia says:

I really should have just gone to bed without reading. Have to get Nothing Happened and Grumpy Fake Boyfriend. And Cinnamon Blade. And I read Song of Blood and Stone when it was self published, but I kind of want to read this version too. And Dirty. A hitman who really kills bad people. With a dirty mouth. God I want to read that. Okay I’m going to bed.

  23. Julia aka mizzelle says:

I *winced* at the “Court of” price for a novella, even a longish one. It’s a hardcover in print, which explains a lot.

Crystal: I always seem to be hit by the Super Tuesday release bloodbaths at the end of the month too. It’s like all my favorite writers get releases then.

I have the Rogue Hearts anthology and Gail Carriger’s novella on pre-order.

  24. JoS says:

Goodreads says Miranda Neville’s (last?) book – Lady Scandal – is due out on May 29.

  25. Shash says:

TWO Desi books coming out this month! My month is made! Again, wish they weren’t both YA though. Why can’t adult South Asian women have any fiction beyond unhappy arranged marriage narratives?

  26. […] releases: Tor.com (scifi, fantasy) and Smart Bitches […]

  27. Gia says:

@Mona I agree…YA should tick the boxes for me too but does not. I don’t want to read about 15 year-olds. It’s hard to believe in a happy ending when you know that person is too young to make that kind of decision. I would really prefer fewer YA recommendations in these columns, especially for pure romance books about characters younger than 18. YA problems aren’t captivating for adult readers and YA books tend to be fluffier. I do like Sarah J Maas, but her heroines tend to be a tad older and there are strong themes other than romance.
