Contemporary Romances, Plus Shakespeare

  • Hate to Want You

Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai

RECOMMENDEDHate to Want You by Alisha Rai is still $1.99! This angsty contemporary romance has been recommended on several podcast episodes and received an A grade from Redheadedgirl:

This is the book that I was most excited to get at RT. When people saw that it was out in the wild, the most inhuman noises were made, and it was worth all of those noises.

    ALL OF THEM.

So much angst. So much pathos. EVERYTHING HAPPENS SO MUCH.

Alisha Rai, one of contemporary romance’s brightest stars, makes her Avon Books debut with the first novel in the sexy Forbidden Hearts series!

One night. No one will know.

That was the deal. Every year, Livvy Kane and Nicholas Chandler would share one perfect night of illicit pleasure. The forbidden hours let them forget the tragedy that haunted their pasts—and the last names that made them enemies.

Until the night she didn’t show up.

Now Nicholas has an empire to run. He doesn’t have time for distractions and Livvy’s sudden reappearance in town is a major distraction. She’s the one woman he shouldn’t want . . . so why can’t he forget how right she feels in his bed?

Livvy didn’t come home for Nicholas, but fate seems determined to remind her of his presence—and their past. Although the passion between them might have once run hot and deep, not even love can overcome the scandal that divided their families.

Being together might be against all the rules . . . but being apart is impossible.

  • Bringing Delaney Home

Bringing Delaney Home by Lee Kilraine

Bringing Delaney Home by Lee Kilraine is $2.99! This book was mentioned in a previous podcastand in February’s Hide Your Wallet post. Some complaints on Goodreads were that the scenes and chapters felt disjointed at times, which kept readers from connecting with the characters. However, others loved the hero and heroine’s personalities. Is this on your TBR list?

In the sleepy town of Climax, North Carolina, all five Cates brothers are known for being tall, dark, and delicious. But each has his own incomparable love story…Quinn Cates has known Delaney Lyons forever. But after years away from home, Delaney’s a changed woman. A mysterious accident she refuses to talk about has left her hurting–in body and soul–and acting out in dangerous, and occasionally entertaining, ways.

Quinn’s on the local police force, so he’s used to dealing with troublemakers. This one’s pretty incorrigible–but he suspects her flippant exterior is hiding something softer and deeper inside. Every time he has to rescue Delaney from herself, his heart and his hormones both go into overdrive. But he owes it to Delaney’s sister to keep an eye on her. He’s got some experience with that after spending so much time at it back in high school…

Delaney just wants to fend off the gossips, fight off the pain of her past, and make her escape once again. But Officer Cates is ordering her not to leave town, and his interrogation techniques can be very persuasive…

  • North to You

North to You by Tif Marcelo

North to You by Tif Marcelo is $2.99! This book came out last summer and I was really excited about it. The heroine runs a food truck that’s in competition with the restaurant that belongs to the hero’s father. Marcelo is a debut author and the book, so far, has a lot of favorable reviews on Goodreads, averaging a 3.8 star rating.

In this warmhearted and charming debut from Tif Marcelo, a food truck chef and her long lost Army love clash when they cross paths in San Francisco.

Camille Marino has got a full plate. As the sole guardian of her eighteen-year-old sister and the head chef and owner of a food truck, she’s used to life being a juggling act. With food to cook, social media accounts to manage, and a little sister to look after, she doesn’t have time for much else.

That is, until Drew Bautista walks back into her life.

Drew is Camille’s former high school crush and he returns to San Francisco to repair his relationship with his father before he ships out for deployment. By helping his father renovate his failing Filipino restaurant, he hopes to win back his respect. But when sparks fly between Drew and Camille—his father’s major competition and sworn enemy—Drew is conflicted. Should he join his father in the war against her food truck? Or surrender to the woman who’s given him a second chance at love?

  • If We Were Villains

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio is $3.99! This is contemporary fiction with a mystery and is highly recommended for fans of Shakespeare. My roommate loved it and was completely taken aback by the ending, but said it took a while to really get into at first.

Enter the players. There were seven of us then, seven bright young things with wide precious futures ahead of us. Until that year, we saw no further than the books in front of our faces.

On the day Oliver Marks is released from jail, the man who put him there is waiting at the door. Detective Colborne wants to know the truth, and after ten years, Oliver is finally ready to tell it.

Ten years ago: Oliver is one of seven young Shakespearean actors at Dellecher Classical Conservatory, a place of keen ambition and fierce competition. In this secluded world of firelight and leather-bound books, Oliver and his friends play the same roles onstage and off: hero, villain, tyrant, temptress, ingénue, extra. But in their fourth and final year, the balance of power begins to shift, good-natured rivalries turn ugly, and on opening night real violence invades the students’ world of make believe. In the morning, the fourth-years find themselves facing their very own tragedy, and their greatest acting challenge yet: convincing the police, each other, and themselves that they are innocent.

Part coming-of-age story, part confession, If We Were Villainsexplores the magical and dangerous boundary between art and life. In this tale of loyalty and betrayal, madness and ecstasy, the players must choose what roles to play before the curtain falls.

Murder with a side of Shakespeare? SOLD!!

  2. Katie Lynn says:

I enjoyed Bringing Delaney Home, I really liked that the heroine was written to be allowed to not be dealing with what happened to her, and she’s not a soft and cuddly character. She’s pretty abrasive, but with good reason

I started reading North to You last summer and just couldn’t get into it. I don’t know if it was the writing or if I just wasn’t in the mood for it, but I stopped about 20% in.

There’s This Guy by Rhys Ford is $0.99, MM contemporary. I’ve read another book by Ford (Fish Stick Fridays) which I enjoyed, and I’m partially through this one.

There’s a boxed set of three of Cora Seton’s Cowboys of Chance Creek books that is currently free. Cowboy contemporaries with wacky plot lines that are well written (they have crazy names like “the Cowboy Inherits a Wife” and “the Cowboy’s email Order Bride”, to give you an idea). They’re not quite cracktastic but are pretty fun to read.

Loved Hate to Want You. Angsty books aren’t usually my thing but this one was great.

Katie Lyn,, The first book is the Cowboys of Chance Creek was great. Loved the wordplay between the hero and heroine.

  4. cleo says:

@Katie Lyn – crap, looks like the Rhys Ford isn’t on sale anymore – it’s full price at AMZ, Kobo and BN.

  5. Nancy C says:

I recently read North To You, loved it, and ran to pick up the next two books in that series. I wish there were more from Tif Marcelo because I don’t want to wait! The descriptions of Filipino food in series made me so hungry, and very curious about this cuisine I know little about.

  6. drewbird says:

@Katie Lynn and Cleo – if you want other mm deals the Johnnies books by Amy Lane are all on sale – my favorite of the bunch (Dex in Blue) is 99 cents (which bums me out since I brought it for $5+ last summer – should have waited!) and the others are various price that are all lower than usual.

It is a series about male porn stars that I was initially not sold on, but I checked out one on Hoopla and got totally sucked in. Should have known, Amy Lane is pretty much an auto-buy for me.
