HaBO: Former Lover May or May Not Be Half-Brother

This HaBO is from Crystal, who is searching for a historical romance that she lent out and never got back, which is always such a shame:

I need help finding title and/or author of a historical romance novel (European, I believe). I read it over ten years ago, lent it to a friend, and never got it back. I have been trying to find this book for years, so any help will be greatly appreciated. I do remember that the version of the book I owned had a red cover, if that helps at all.

It has been a while since I have read this book, so my memory of the plot may be erroneous. The leading lady is abducted due to a feud with the main man and her father. I believe the woman is abducted by the man’s brother. While in captivity, the woman and her captor fall in love and she becomes pregnant. Another woman comes into the picture though and the kidnapped woman is kept in a basement room in terrible conditions at the request of the new woman.

While in captivity, the woman finds out information that leads her to believe that her captor/former lover/father of her child might actually be her half-brother. The captor’s brother falls in love with the women and helps her escape, but during the escape, it is revealed that he is actually the half-brother, not her former lover.

I believe she escapes to a convent, or is sent to one after her father discovers that she is pregnant. The main man then comes to find her and his child and attempts to persuade them to come back to him.

Well that’s quite a love-triangle. Or is this a love-quadrangle? Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Isn’t this the infamous Stormfire by Christine Monson?

  2. Elizabeth says:

Was it set in Elizabethan England? I remember one similar to this by Victoria Holt.

The Lion Triumphant, by Philippa Carr

Here is a review of Stormfire by Christine Monson. It does involve some siblings.

Spoiler Alert from the review above.
” So Catherine and Liam ARE true siblings. Before Liam’s death, he’d forged a copy of his father’s will so that Sean and Catherine would think they were related and would stay away from each other. Liam was jealous of Sean, so that’s why he did it.”

Could it be The Pirate Prince by Gaelen Foley?

  7. L. says:

No, it’s not The Pirate Prince. While the “hero” suddenly came down with a case of Assholeitis, I don’t recall there ever being a plot point where there was any worry the couple was related.

Was the hero missing a finger? My first ever historical romance novel had a plot like this, but mostly I remember that the hero always wore gloves with a fake finger because the heroine’s father caused the hero to lose one of them. And then at one point he used his gloved fake finger to er, intimately pleasure the heroine (17 year old me was SCANDALIZED). Basically his whole revenge plot was the get the girl pregnant, then send her back to her evil father with his bastard child (which turned out to be twins). Her mother was somehow involved in all of this (where some of the sibling mystery came in). Also, it seemed like they were jetting back and forth around Ireland quite a bit.
It was all so deliciously old skool that if this isn’t the book that is the HaBO, then I’d kindly request someone please help me remember the title of this one.

I don’t know this book but it sounds like something I want to read IF (and this is a HUGE if) the hero grovels like hell at the end…

  10. Crystal says:

Stormfire sounds very promising, I will have to check it out and see. Thank you so much!

I don’t remember anyone missing a finger, but it has been a long time, it is possible.

The Lion Triumphant doesn’t quite sound like what I am looking for, but thanks for the help.
