Informal Head Count Time: Bitches at the Bear!

Wine! Thanks to Bitchery reader Jora, we have a heads up on a cool place to meet the San Francisco readers who might not be attending RWA but would like to meet Bitches in person, and an equally cool place for folks at the conference to meet up and have a drink with us.

Bitching Happy Hour will be Friday 1 August at 3:30 pm at the Thirsty Bear bar, 661 Howard Street. It’s on the Bitchery Food & Drink map of San Francisco if you need a visual or you really dig the street view. They have house brews, wine, and tapas, and since I love two out of three of those things, I am there like merde and mon dieu.

We’ll be gathering, drinking, and eating, and we’re looking forward to meeting you. This is open to anyone who wants to come have a drink with us – we hope you’ll come by! To give us a rough idea as to whether you’re going to duck out of work early and drink with the crazy ladies from this here website, leave a comment please so we can get an estimated head count. See you in a week!

I’ll try and pop down when I get back from taking the hordes over to Lacis’s Museum of Lace & Textiles in Berkeley to look at the exhibition of 18th and 19th century clothes they have up right now (we’re not leaving the hotel until 2:30, so you all may be done or stone drunk by the time I get there, LOL!).

  2. SonomaLass says:

    Waaaaah! T_T

Okay, this is the last time I’m going to whine and cry (and yes, bitch!) about missing this gathering.  My son is getting married that afternoon in Marin County, so I will be less than an hour north of y’all, sharing a wedding buffet with many people I love, but also my ex, his mother, and other assorted outlaws.  I will be crying a lot, but by then it won’t be over missing a Bitchery gathering, I suppose.

They have house brews, wine, and tapas, and since I love two out of three of those things, I am there like merde and mon dieu.

Gotta ask, SB Sarah, which one don’t you love?  I love all three!!!

Hope this is a terrific and fun event, and that you all have a great time during your visit to our gorgeous Bay.

  3. SB Sarah says:

I am a wine and tapas girl. Beer and I do not always get along – makes me rather ill, all that liquid bread and yeasty malty hoppy goodness. I do like some beers, and remain deeply jealous of everyone who gets to drink Shiner Bock (the best beer in the whole damn universe) because I cannot get any in Jersey, so matter how much I plead with the local liquor store.

Mazel tov on your son’s wedding, though!

  4. Chicklet says:

I’m just asking because it’s a bar in San Francisco with “bear” in the title… are you sure it’s not a gay leather bar? 🙂

  5. Nadia says:

The more I hear about this conference, the greener I get.

Sarah, ah, the taste extravaganza that is Shiner, I would lift a pint with you.  I’ve even been on a tour of the brewery, where they give you plenty o’ samples.  Sa-weet.  In days of yore before liquids were outlawed on airplanes, we were known to pack a cooler as our carry-on when visiting friends who left Texas and were no longer able to partake of the beery goodness.  It makes the perfect hostess gift!  It is getting more widespread since Miller picked it up, though – I saw it out in California on my vacation earlier this month.

  6. Zoe Archer says:

I won’t be at the conference in an official capacity—having some meetings and other fancy schmancy writer stuff—but I’ll try and drag the hubs over to meet the Bitches.  And then I can entertain everyone with tales of My Slutty Year in San Francisco.

  7. If it isn’t a Bear Bar, it ought to be.

I will do my best to get there.

  8. Carrie Lofty says:

With bells on. And I’ll convince Her High Haloness, my roomie Ann, to join us.

  9. Marta Acosta says:

I shall certainly try to make it.  I’m not attending the conference, but I am hanging out here and there.  I’ll be at the Simon & Schuster/Pocket dinner and then the book signing and hanging out at the hotel bar if anyone wants to say hi.

  10. Kalen Hughes says:

I’m just asking because it’s a bar in San Francisco with “bear” in the title… are you sure it’s not a gay leather bar? 🙂

Nope. It’s usually full of office drones, computer geeks and the occasional bachelorette party. No big hairy men in odd bits of leather and stainless steal. For that you have to go a few blocks farther to Mr. S Leather.  *grin*

  11. Kalen Hughes says:

Sarah, have you had Köstritzer Schwartzbier? I live for this beer. If you’re up for insanely good German food I’ll steal you one night and drag you off to Speisekammer on my side of the bay. The Jägerschnitzel is out of control. *drool*

  12. Kalen Hughes says:

I almost forgot! There’s Suppenküche in San Francisco too (owned by the same people).  It’s in Hayes Valley, which also happens to have some fantastic boutiques. Great for finding strange gifts and cool clothes (and shoes, OMG the shoes!).

  13. Kathleen O'Reilly says:

I’ll be there for a bit!!!

  14. karmelrio says:

    I’m there.!

  15. Elaine Lee says:

I will be there!  Looking forward to meeting the Bitches and assorted Bitchery!  Thirsty Bear has awesome tapas, I’m sure all will enjoy.

  16. I’ll be there! And I had Shiner Bock last week in Minnesota. I love beer.

  17. Barb Ferrer says:

It would probably not be good form to show up baked for my moderation duties at 4:30 that afternoon would it?

    Didn’t think so.

    Dang.

  18. Victoria Dahl says:

Crappy crap crap. I’ve got plans that hour! Ah well. I WILL find you.

  19. I will try to be there, but might show up late. Any idea how long you’ll be there?

  20. SB Sarah says:

Probably about an hour or two, most likely. I hope we see you there!

  21. Oh!  I have a doctor’s appointment at 2:15 in the East Bay, so I’m hoping to be there (however, there have been bad experiences with this doctor being very, very late).  That’ll fun, fun, fun!

  22. Jill says:

May I be another maybe ? There is a Cherry Gathering at Buca’s on Thurs night. I should be recovered by Fri afternoon 😉 and I’d love to meet you.

  23. Kris Kennedy says:

I’m usually quiet here, more like an adoring audience, but since you’re trying to get a head-count, I’ll say I’d love to attend, depending on how long you’re there.  I’ll see how long the GH reception goes.  Love to meet all and drink beer outside of the hotel 🙂

  24. kassiana says:

8-1-08 is my tenth wedding anniversary. Also, I live in Illinois and have no money, so there’s no way in heck I’d be there even if it wasn’t my anniversary, but that’s just a neat coincidence. Have fun and drink an extra (your drink of choice) for those of us who have no chance in hell of showing up!

  25. I’ve put it down on my spreadsheet.

  26. Tamar Bihari says:

Just put it on my calendar.  I’ll probably bring one or two friends.  Looking forward to it!  (Even though I mostly lurk here, I love the flavor of this community.)

  27. Lorelie says:

    I’ll be there!

Though I must say I’m beginning to wonder when I’ll have time for a workshop, considering all the “networking” and signings and other faboo stuff I want to do.  Eh, I’ll sneak in one or two.  😉

  28. Esri Rose says:

I’m planning on coming. Thanks for setting it up!

  29. Tracy Wolff says:

I’ll do my best to get there.  Sounds like a blast!

  30. Rosie says:

My only conflict was getting to see Meljean at 3 pm at the Berkley signing.  Heck if she’s at the bar I’m so there!

  31. I’ve got to sign books at the Berkley signing instead!  Please hoist a glass in my honor!

97 of the standard, as the codeword suggests, are not needed!  LOL

    Diane

  32. Jo Bourne says:

    I have the Berkley signing.
Rats!  That’s three things I have to do, all at the same time.

I have to get aholt of Hermione.

  33. Denni says:

Not a chance…hoist one for me too!

Jo…Murphy’s Law, if you only have two appointments in the same month, they are sure to be on the same day and time.

Spam “almost85”…no, no, not even close – ok occassionally early in the morning.

  34. Gail Dayton says:

I’m signing at the Tor booksigning (a few bound ms ARCs) at 2. I Think it will be over by then. So I will do my darnedest to get there.

  35. I will try to stop by after the workshops, if you all are still holding up the bar!

  36. dangrgirl says:

I chimed in via Twitter, but I’ll (Lisa Spindler) be there as will my gal pal Leslie Dicken.
