There was some lovely writing, some fantastic banter, and I really did like Shay and Dominic together. They had terrific chemistry and the sort of teasing relationship that makes me very happy, because it means there is a firm foundation of friendship underneath the romance.
The Devil and the Heiress by Harper St. George is a tropey historical romance with light conflict. It worked totally for me, but lately I’ve needed less darkness and fewer obstacles for the main characters to overcome in my reading.
My Sweet Folly by Laura Kinsale is $2.99! This book sounds absolutely bananas. Readers really loved the heroine and how witty she was. However, given the bananas quality of the book, some said the pacing is a bit all over the place. Have you read this one?
Too Much by Rachel Vorona Cote is $2.99! This nonfiction book was featured on both Hide Your Wallet & Cover Awe. This one is definitely in our house of wheels. Did you pick it up after seeing it mentioned here?
RECOMMENDED: The Lord I Left by Scarlett Peckham is 99c! Thanks for everyone who let us know about this sale. I believe it’s best to read this series in order, rather than as standalones. Claudia gave this one a B+:
There was a lot to like and enjoy: plenty of funny and tender moments, thoughtful discussions, and some of my favorite setups in romance, including an “one room at the inn” scenario.
All of that is to say: if you stare at walls a lot right now and you can’t really read because everything is just too much all the time? You’re not alone. I get you. And if you want to try a book that gets it too, and will remind you that there can be light at the end of this god-awful tunnel, maybe try this one.
RECOMMENDED: The Other Daughter by Lauren Willig is $2.99! This is historical fiction with romantic elements and Redheadedgirl gave it an A:
I like Willig’s writing a lot. It’s not complex; it’s kind of like the hot chocolate of prose. It’s smooth, and it’s classic. That may sound kind of like damning with faint praise, which I’m really not trying to do. There are times when what I want is smooth prose without a lot of flourishes, and Willig always delivers.
Puddin’ by Julie Murphy is $1.99! Not sure if this is a Kindle Daily Deal. I didn’t see it on the list today, but I may have missed it. This is a companion novel to Dumplin’ though it’s not necessary to read that one to enjoy this one. Just be warned that the ending to Dumplin’ might get spoiled. I loved Dumplin’ and am excited to read this one. Murphy has a great way of writing really likable characters.
RECOMMENDED: The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals; be sure to check out the rest of them! This is the first book in the much loved Discworld series. There’s magic and lots of quirky humor, though admittedly, the series isn’t for everyone. So don’t worry if you give it a shot and it’s not for you. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.
The Dream Hunter by Laura Kinsale is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a standalone historical romance and many reviews say this book is completely bonkers. Some also note that the audio is particularly good. Have you read this one? Is it as crazysauce as everyone says?
Behind a Lady’s Smile by Jane Goodger is 99c! I’m completely in love with this cover. I’m also not a huge historical romance reader, but the description has me considering a purchase. If you’re on the fence about this book, here’s a Goodreads review that made my morning:
Crass language and explicit scenes make this book, and author, a no-go for me. I prefer the regency/western genres to be clean and perchance a bit more romanticized. Gentlemen should be just that, gentlemen. And the women should be ladies worth waiting for. Nothing wrong with embracing chivalry and good old fashioned morals.
