Hey there! I enjoyed our conversation last month so much, I wanted to check in again. I also wanted to show you some of the spring we’ve got going on around here! It’s SPRING. My neighbor’s lawn is half covered by lily of the valley, and I want to take the deepest breaths of my life when we walk by. It smells impossibly good. And then there’s my other neighbor who grows poppies! I … Continue reading How’s it Going with You?→
Romance fans, we made it through another Pink Halloween, aka Valentine’s Day. Woo hoo! Have you gone in search of on-sale discounted candy? We have. We have a tradition of finding post-Valentine’s-Day treats and making corny Valentine’s for the teenagers, and our usual favorite sale-hunting spot is the local CVS. I swear, every time I go into that CVS they’ve somehow added another aisle and a bunch of things I never thought I’d see in … Continue reading Hayadoin Now that Pink Halloween is Over?→
It’s Halloween! And it’s also holiday season because obviously Halloween has no strength as a barrier between “apple cider/pumpkin spice” and “HOLY CRAP HOLIDAY CHRISTMAS JINGLE TINSEL RAH RAH RAH.” Every year, my neighbors sit around a fire pit on Halloween and greet the neighborhood kids so they don’t have to go up and down all our steps (and alarm my dogs who, for the record, think Halloween is absolutely the Worst). We have themed … Continue reading Hayadoin? Got Halloween?→
Tomorrow is the first day of fall in the northern hemisphere, and the first day of spring south of the equator. Happy new season everyone! Now, I’m told that Costco has the holiday decorations up already. On one hand I find this deeply amusing because I cannot tell you how much I delight in knowing that I, or anyone with a membership card, can find Jesus in the aisles of Costco. On the other hand, … Continue reading What Are You Looking Forward To This Fall?→
This is a weird part of January, isn’t it? It’s Very Winter in the northern hemisphere. It’s long after the holidays, and a few weeks away from Valentine’s Day, aka Pink Halloween Candy on sale, and for me, it’s coooooold. Whoo, cold. What about you? How are you doing? What are you looking forward to this weekend, or in the weeks ahead? I have new projects I’m working on, and I have So Many Books … Continue reading What Are You Looking Forward To?→
Hey, there! How’s things by you? Also, do you remember how time works? I do not. I know the adage, “The days are long, but the years are short.” Right now, I think the days are getting shorter, the months are on warp speed, and I stopped being able to tell what year it is in 2019. My calendar (I just looked at it twice) tells me that it’s October 28, but fall is certainly … Continue reading What is Your Favorite Part of This Season?→
By request, it’s time for our community check in, which I call the “Hayadoin” post! What’s up? How’s things by you? Anything you’re anticipating this month? Here at SBHQ, it’s nearly the Days of Awe, with Rosh Hashana next week, and also the Days of AWWW HECK I GOT A LOT TO DO. I know for many folks, and definitely for myself, the Jewish new year, the new school year, and the change of season … Continue reading How’s It Going?→
By request, it’s another “Hayadoin” post! First, back when I lived in New Jersey, there were many novelty songs about the 1999/2000 Yankees, including “Haya Doin,” composed and performed by Joseph “Joey Balls” Summa and Carmine “Carmanooch” Famiglietti. As I’m typing this, on repeat in my silly, tired brain is, “Bitches, hayadoin? Ha-ha-ya doin?” If this earworm is at all familiar to you, I apologize for resurrecting it. So, anyways, hayadoin? What are you looking … Continue reading What Are You Looking Forward To This Month?→
Every now and again I’ve had to test different database settings by requesting comment threads, and in my last one, a few of you asked if these “Hayadoin” posts could be regular features. I love this idea, especially since you help form one of the most welcoming and thoughtful communities online, and I love reading what you have to say. So, hayadoin? What are you looking forward to this weekend, or this month? As for … Continue reading What Are You Looking Forward To?→
