Prudence is the first installment in a new steampunk series by Gail Carriger. Many of you will read no further than that sentence. As fans of the lovely and amazing Gail, you are already racing out the door en route to your local bookshop, should you be lucky enough to still have one, or fleeing this page for the pleasures of Amazon or Kobo or whatever you use for your digital book needs. Godspeed, dear … Continue reading Prudence by Gail Carriger →
So full disclosure: I was PMSing bad when I read Kiss of Steel and I was riding the Feels train pretty damn hard (also to the dude who stumbled here by mistake looking for a book review and got an update on my menstrual cycle–Welcome to the Bitchery. Yeah, we talk about periods but there are cookies. And orca sex reviews) so some of my thoughts on this book might be due to highly amplified … Continue reading Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster →
Marian Perera is the author of The Eden Series, a shark-punk series in which some people have the ability to communicate and work with ocean animals (mostly sharks, although I’m thrilled to say that orcas, kraken, and a megalodon have also made appearances). The series works as a set of stand-alone romance novels which, taken together, create a larger picture of a complex fantasy world in which various countries are constantly at war or on … Continue reading The Highest Tide by Marian Perera →
I recently started reading steampunk, and I’m so glad I did because I found The Diabolical Miss Hyde by Viola Carr. This book is part steampunk, part fantasy, part romance and part mystery, but all of it is delicious. The titular character is the daughter of the famous and now deceased Henry Jekyll. Like her father, Eliza Jekyll harbors a secret shadow-self, Lizzie Hyde. Eliza is proper and straight laced, a doctor who tends to the … Continue reading The Diabolical Miss Hyde by Viola Carr →
The Clocks of London is a fun steampunky mystery romance set in the weirdest alternate-London that I have come across yet. It’s not the most well written book ever, but it has some fun elements to it. This book assumes that England, including London, was covered with water at some point in our history (and the book’s past). I’m calling it steampunk for lack of a better word – it’s a very Victorian style setting, … Continue reading The Clocks of London by Lyn Brittan →
Gunpowder Alchemy is the first book in a steampunk series set in China during the Opium Wars. It’s a fun, fresh setting, with interesting, complex characters and a great balance of plot, romance, and steampunk geeky goodness. You should know that it’s an adventure series with a lot of romance, not a romance novel with a lot of adventure. Also, it ends on a cliffhanger (WHY GOD WHY). The plot involves Jin Soling, the daughter … Continue reading Gunpowder Alchemy by Jeannie Lin →
DocTurtle has returned with Chapters 1 and 2 of The Iron Duke. Want to read along for future chapters? You can get a copy at Goodreads, Amazon, BN, Sony, or Kobo. Chapter 1: Cool Britannia! This book begins with a bang…particularly if by “bang” we mean a hand grenade filled with tiny bits of exposition. There’s a lot of ground to cover in seventeen pages, but Meljean Brook runs the route with a solid pace, and she takes time to … Continue reading DocTurtle: The Iron Duke, Ch. 1-2 →
Awhile back, in 2009, DocTurtle, a professor of mathematics, was a guest reviewer here as we schooled him on the best of romance. You can see the complete DocTurtle archive to see his serial reviews of An Infamous Army by Georgette Heyer, Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase, and Sex Straight Up by Kathleen O'Riley. He didn't finish Dark Lover by JR Ward, but he gave it his best effort. Something about “tenure” and a “packet.” And things that were due. Every now … Continue reading The Return of DocTurtle! →
