That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon

RECOMMENDED: That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming is $2.99 and a KDD! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B:
This book was perfect entertainment for my stressed out brain, and I was definitely rooting for those two wacky kids to have their HEA.
Spice trader Cinnamon’s quiet life is turned upside down when she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon, in this irreverently quirky rom-com fantasy that is sweet, steamy, and funny as hell.
All she wanted to do was live her life in peace—maybe get a cat, expand the family spice farm. Really, anything that didn’t involve going on an adventure where an orc might rip her face off. But they say the goddess has favorites, and if so, Cin is clearly not one of them.
After Cin saves the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, Fallon reveals that all he really wants to do is kill an evil witch enslaving his people. And who can blame him? But now he’s dragging Cinnamon along for the ride whether she likes it or not. On the bright side, at least he keeps burning off his shirt.…

Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto is $1.99! If you’re on the senior sleuths train, you may already have this one on your radar. For those who have read it, what did you think?
A lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties.
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady–ah, lady of a certain age–who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to.
Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing–a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer.
What Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?

RECOMMENDED: The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi is $2.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a coveted squee grade:
Oh wow, you guys, The Kaiju Preservation Society is an absolute blast – so much so that it provided me with oodles of entertainment and happiness on a recent drive with my husband, my mother, and 2 teens, the latter of which were crammed into the backseat of the car with me. Believe me when I say that there can be no higher tribute to this book than the fact that I did not murder anyone on this trip. Yet.
The Kaiju Preservation Society is John Scalzi’s first standalone adventure since the conclusion of his New York Times bestselling Interdependency trilogy.
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.
What Tom doesn’t tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They’re the universe’s largest and most dangerous panda and they’re in trouble.
It’s not just the Kaiju Preservation Society that’s found its way to the alternate world. Others have, too–and their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.

THAT TIME I GOT DRUNK AND SAVED A DEMON
This was hilarious. The characters and world building were great. It was sort of medieval fantasy with lots of anachronisms, but it all worked. The leads were great together and Cin was a fabulous main character. Light, fluffy, and totally enjoyable.
THE KAIJU PRESERVATION SOCIETY
I totally enjoyed this book. Very silly. And a tech bro gets his due. Loved the tech bro end. Also, the kaiju are brilliantly weird.
I also loved The Kaiju Preservation Society. I listened to it on audio when it first came out and it helped keep me housecleaning, because I wanted to find out what happened.
And I’m another who enjoyed The Kaiju Preservation Society!
I really liked the KPS! It was soo much fun. I’m thinking about listening to the audio book since that also got positive comments in the original review.
Also: Duke of Luhst?! Giggle snort. Is there like a French Duke of Glutogny?

Add me to the KPS chorus! The game with Jamie’s gender is also fun.
Something odd is going on with the links to Amazon UK, this time the KPS one linked me to a lot of dinosaur models, I know the KPS was published over here and was able to find it, but I’m not sure that had I bought it you would have got affiliate money. It’s not the first time this has happened ether it’s a regular occurrence, not every book – all the other links today are fine – but quite a lot of them.
My husband just finished listening to Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers as his latest “walking the dogs” audiobook and I k ow he really enjoyed it and the insight into “Chinese mother culture,” as he put it.
I just sent him Carrie’s review of the new Scalzi because it sounded right up his alley, and he is already scouting it.
Basically, I confess that I share Bitches reviews with family members because y’all are always right on target and are the best. Thankful for this community!
Also I am clearly going to have to finally read this book about Roscoe the Parrrot that is a featured ad. I feel like we are friends now.
@Caroline ~ I look forward to hearing your take on Roscoe!
