Long Live Evil

RECOMMENDED: Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! It was recommended by both Bree Bridges and Sarah in the Rrrrromantasy panel Sarah moderated, by Courtney Milan in the SBTB podcast episode, and in a Rec League on Pure Escapism.
This adult epic fantasy debut from Sarah Rees Brennan puts the reader in the villain’s shoes, for an adventure that is both “brilliant” (Holly Black) and “supremely satisfying” (Leigh Bardugo). Expect a rogue’s gallery of villains including an axe wielding maid, a shining knight with dark moods, a homicidal bodyguard, and a playboy spymaster with a golden heart and a filthy reputation.
When her whole life collapsed, Rae still had books. Dying, she seizes a second chance at a magical bargain that lets her enter the world of her favorite fantasy series.
She wakes in a castle on the edge of a hellish chasm, in a kingdom on the brink of war. Home to dangerous monsters, scheming courtiers and her favourite fictional the Once and Forever Emperor. He’s impossibly alluring, as only fiction can be. And in this fantasy world, she discovers she’s not the heroine, but the villainess in the Emperor’s tale.
So be it. The wicked are better dressed, with better one-liners, even if they’re doomed to bad ends. She assembles the wildly disparate villains of the story under her evil leadership, plotting to change their fate. But as the body count rises and the Emperor’s fury increases, it seems Rae and her allies may not survive to see the final page.
THIS IS A TALE FOR EVERYONE WHO’S EVER FALLEN FOR THE VILLAIN…

Molly Molloy & the Angel of Death by Maria Vale is 99c! I highly suggest listening to the podcast we did with Maria on this book. She explains it well that this isn’t a romance per se.
Death needs a do-over.
Azrael—grim reaper and devourer of worlds–has messed up. Instead of taking Molly Molloy’s soul, he patted her on the back and saved her from choking on an atomic chicken wing.
Now she can see him. Talk to him. Touch him. Say ‘no’ to him. And make him question the assumptions he has held for an eternity.
Molly is sick of Death capsizing her life. He’d taken her parents, then her grandparents, then her first great love.
Now, just as she was on the verge of getting her life together with a job that paid enough and a NYC apartment that didn’t cost too much, Death interferes again in ways she could never have imagined.
The Powers that Be want Azrael to fix his mistake but before he can, Death makes one more.
He falls in love.

How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying by Django Wexler is $2.99 and another KDD! I mentioned this in Get Rec’d a couple weeks ago and Darlynne commented, warning of a cliffhanger but noting it was definitely worth it. If you picked up and enjoyed Long Live Evil, this may make a good read-alike.
Groundhog Day meets Deadpool in Django Wexler’s raunchy, hilarious, blood-splattered fantasy tale about a young woman who, tired of defending humanity from the Dark Lord, decides to become the Dark Lord herself.
“Takes the old saying ‘If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,’ to the next level. A sarcastic, action-packed, intrigue-filled (mis)adventure. One of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time.”–Matt Dinniman, author of Dungeon Crawler Carl
Davi has done this all before. She’s tried to be the hero and take down the all-powerful Dark Lord. A hundred times she’s rallied humanity and made the final charge. But the time loop always gets her in the end. Sometimes she’s killed quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. But she’s been defeated every time.
This time? She’s done being the hero and done being stuck in this endless time loop. If the Dark Lord always wins, then maybe that’s who she needs to be. It’s Davi’s turn to play on the winning side.

Good Girl by Lauren Layne is $2.99! The heroine is a country singer and the hero is a moody estate owner. I haven’t read this one, but I’ve read other Lauren Layne titles, and she writes such great dialogue. However, some readers thought the romance was missing something. Have you read this one?
Lauren Layne brings all the unpredictable heat of her USA Today bestseller Blurred Lines to an all-new cast of characters! Country music’s favorite good girl is hiding away from the world—only to find herself bunking with a guy who makes her want to be a little bad.
Jenny Dawson moved to Nashville to write music, not get famous. But when her latest record goes double platinum, Jenny’s suddenly one of the town’s biggest stars—and the center of a tabloid scandal connecting her with a pop star she’s barely even met. With paparazzi tracking her every move, Jenny flees to a remote mansion in Louisiana to write her next album. The only hiccup is the unexpected presence of a brooding young caretaker named Noah, whose foul mouth and snap judgments lead to constant bickering—and serious heat.
Noah really should tell Jenny that he’s Preston Noah Maxwell Walcott, the owner of the estate where the feisty country singer has made her spoiled self at home. But the charade gives Noah a much-needed break from his own troubles, and before long, their verbal sparring is indistinguishable from foreplay. But as sizzling nights give way to quiet pillow talk, Noah begins to realize that Jenny’s almost as complicated as he is. To fit into each other’s lives, they’ll need the courage to face their problems together—before the outside world catches up to them.

I want to warn people that the MMC from Good Girl deliberately and repeatedly cuts the FMC where it really hurts. YMMV, but I cant handle seeing an abuser end up with his victim, even if he’s ‘grown’.
A charming short fantasy story that is free ~

The only book here I haven’t read is Lauren Layne’s and, thanks to Michelle, I don’t feel the need to correct that.
The others were excellent, imo, for different reasons. The Wexler book has a heroine trying not to be a villain; Vale’s is definitely not a romance, still an interesting take on Death; LONG LIVE EVIL was quite violent, sometimes confusing with characters having different names (iirc), but I’ll definitely read the next book.
Adding a note that The Guncle was a lovely book, memorable and definitely a favorite of its year.
