Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail
Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail by Ashley Herring Blake is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is book two in the Bright Falls series; most of the books (if not all of them) have been mentioned in Hide Your Wallet. Do you have a favorite book in the series?
An interior designer learns to rebuild her love life from the ground up with zero blueprints in this new romantic comedy by Ashley Herring Blake, author of Delilah Green Doesn’t Care.
For Astrid Parker, failure is unacceptable. Ever since she broke up with her fiancé a year ago, she’s been focused on her career—her friends might say she’s obsessed, but she’s just driven. When Pru Everwood asks her to be the designer for the Everwood Inn’s renovation that will be broadcasted on a popular home improvement show, Innside America, Astrid knows this is the answer to everything that is wrong with her life. It’ll be the perfect distraction from her failed love life, and her perpetually displeased mother might finally give her nod of approval.
However, Astrid never planned on Jordan Everwood, Pru’s granddaughter and lead carpenter for the inn’s renovation, who despises every modern design decision Astrid makes. Jordan is determined to preserve the history of her family’s inn, particularly as the rest of her life is in shambles. When that determination turns into a little light sabotage, ruffling Astrid’s perfect little feathers, the showrunners ask them to play up the tension. But somewhere along the way, their dislike for each other turns into something quite different, and Astrid must decide what success truly means. Is she going to pursue the life that she’s expected to lead, or the one she wants?

A River Enchanted
A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross is $1.99! This was Ross’s debut adult fantasy novel and there is a romantic subplot. I’ve also mentioned it on a previous Get Rec’d and Hide Your Wallet I think.

Mr. Malcolm’s List
Mr. Malcolm’s List by Suzanne Allain is $1.99! I’ve read some of Allain’s later historicals and they don’t quite work for me. However, this one make many “Best Of” lists when it was released. Did any of you catch the movie adaptation?
It is a truth universally acknowledged that an arrogant bachelor insistent on a wife who meets the strictest of requirements–deserves his comeuppance.
The Honourable Mr. Jeremy Malcolm is searching for a wife, but not just any wife. As the target of matchmaking mothers and desperate debutantes, he’s determined to avoid the fortune hunters and find a near-perfect woman, one who will meet the qualifications on his well-crafted list. But after years of searching, he’s beginning to despair of ever finding this paragon. Until Selina Dalton arrives in town.
Selina, a vicar’s daughter of limited means and a stranger to high society, is thrilled when her friend Julia Thistlewaite invites her to London, until she learns it’s all part of a plot to exact revenge on Mr. Malcolm. Selina is reluctant to participate in Julia’s scheme, especially after meeting the irresistible Mr. Malcolm, who appears to be very different from the arrogant scoundrel of Julia’s description.
But when Mr. Malcolm begins judging Selina against his unattainable standards, Selina decides that she has some qualifications of her own. And if he is to meet them he must reveal the real man behind…Mr. Malcolm’s List.

In Bed with the Billionaire
In Bed with the Billionaire by Jackie Ashenden is $2.99! This sale seems to be available at Amazon only. I liked this one, noting in my Goodreads review that I would give it 3.5 stars. (Why can’t we do half stars?!) This is a dark erotic romance, so do check triggers. Really enjoyed the heroine in this one!
A man with everything on the line…
Known to the underworld only as Jericho, billionaire Theo Fitzgerald is one of the most powerful men in the world. But his plan is to tear down the criminal empire his father created from the inside out—unless someone else does it for him. He suspects a bold, seductive woman named Temple Cross might be trying to take him out with it—but for the chance to burn in the heat she gives off, he’s not sure if he minds…A hired hit woman, Temple has been waiting to get close to Jericho her whole life. The man who destroyed her family is worth looking in the eye before she kills him—but when she’s finally alone with Jericho, he’s nothing like the ruthless barbarian she imagined. Or will he have to risk losing her love to save her life, in In Bed with the Billionaire by Jackie Ashenden.

I enjoyed “Mr. Malcolm’s List” in movie form. It was cute; pretty and more racially/ethnically diverse than the book, so clearly taking a cue from “Bridgerton” – but kept it quite PG for folks who don’t want steamy content. I glanced at the book but just didn’t find it that compelling.
I ADORE the Bright Falls series. Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail was the first book I picked up and I personally think it’s a great place to start with the trilogy.
Ashley Herring Blake excels at making deeply flawed people relatable, vulnerable, and likeable. Her heroines in this series are, from a certain perspective, kind of dicks. And yet she sets them on totally believable journeys where you get to see the reasons why they act the way they do, they deal with their issues and become better versions of themselves, and you are absolutely rooting for their HEAs by the end. These books encourage you to, in the words of Hank Green, “Imagine other people complexly”. They also give me more faith in, and patience for, humanity.
Regarding half stars, The Storygraph allows them! (Even .25 stars which is a little too detailed for me). I like using this app for tracking my reading and identifying trends/patterns, though it’s less reviews focused than Goodreads.
