This HaBO is from AJ, who wants to find this paranormal romance:
I’ve gotten a scene from a book stuck in my head and for the life of me I can’t remember the name – no amount of googling seem to be helping either.
So, from what I can recall – the book begins with the shifter hero (pretty sure he’s a werewolf) with a buddy and he catches the scent of the human heroine. Both the hero and buddy realize that this means she’s special, I think (really can’t remember if it was a fated mates thing or not). Anyway, I think they head in to a shop (coffee shop?) where the heroine is, she drops stuff after realizing the hero is staring and he helps her out. I think the encounter freaks her out a bit because it’s so intense and she runs away, but the hero finds her later on in the day.
Small other detail, but I think the heroine or her close friend owns like a paranormal/tarot/magic shop or something similar and has some knowledge of the supernatural. Otherwise I believe shifters aren’t a known thing in the world.
I remember that I read this book around the Twilight craze, which is when I opened my eyes to explicit romance novels, so somewhere around 2011–2012 maybe?
Hope this rings someone’s bell, all suggestions appreciated!
Can we HaBO?
Could that be Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Night Play?
Shiftless by Aimee Easterling maybe? It has a wolf who has fled her pack and hasn’t been around wolves or shifted for 10 years; and meets two werewolves at a bookstore, she tries to flee, but they make her talk to them at a nearby coffee shop.

Some years since I read it, so I’m hazy on the details, but maybe Sunlight by Robin McKinley?
On second thought, almost certainly not. For a start, I think he’s a vampire. Duh.
I feel like I’ve read this (something on KU by Lola Glass perhaps?) but these are significantly more recent than Twilight. TBF There are also 700 books on my ‘shapeshifter’ shelf on goodreads.
Is it Barista and the Bear by Rebel Carter? Some of the details are similar, though it was published a bit later (2020).
Also a bit later than the timeframe, but could it be Bearista by Zoe Chant (2017)? The shifter in question is a bear not a wolf, but maybe?
Also, @Lauren, trying to narrow down my goodreads by shifter and coffee shop didn’t help either.
I immediately thought “Mating the Huntress” by Talia Hibbert, but doesn’t seem to be a match.
What about Bitten, by Kelley Armstrong?
Wolf’s Chance by Eve L. Mitchell perhaps.

I know I’ve read this! Unfortunately I don’t own it, and I read a ton of wolf shifter books back in the day, so I don’t remember the title or author. But in case it’s helpful, I remember that this is a fated mate book, and a couple of other details: the hero takes the heroine to visit his parents, who are supportive, but he decides at some point not to claim her; I can’t remember why. Eventually he changes his mind. There was something about his brother, I think, who isn’t in this book–maybe he died or disappeared? This is the first book in a series, and I think the hero’s friend is the hero of the second book. And I think maybe there was pack drama about the alpha or heir or something?
Following because now this is driving me nuts, too!
Could it be one of the Jennifer Ashley shifter books?
One of Christine Feehan’s Leopard shifter books featured a heroine who had a coffee shop. Can’t remember which one though
@SB Sarah: I don’t think that the comment hearts are accumulating from day to day anymore.
Hey! I went on a deep-dive because the memory of this book frustrated me too much, so for those wondering like me – the book turned out to be Last Wolf Standing by Rhyannon Byrd! It’s from 2008, so my timeline was a bit off. Thanks for all the suggestions in the comments 🙂
