  • The Late Mrs. Willoughby

The Late Mrs. Willoughby by Claudia Gray

The Late Mrs. Willoughby by Claudia Gray is $2.99! This is book two of the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mysteries series. I remember Sarah mentioning and being excited for the first book. Not sure if these can be read as standalones, so please sound off in the comments.

The suspenseful sequel to The Murder of Mr. Wickham, which sees Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney reunited, and with another mystery to solve: the dreadful poisoning of the scoundrel Willoughby’s new wife.

Catherine and Henry Tilney of Northanger Abbey are not entirely pleased to be sending their eligible young daughter Juliet out into the world again: the last house party she attended, at the home of the Knightleys, involved a murder—which Juliet helped solve. Particularly concerning is that she intends to visit her new friend Marianne Brandon, who’s returned home to Devonshire shrouded in fresh scandal—made more potent by the news that her former suitor, the rakish Mr. Willoughby, intends to take up residence at his local estate with his new bride.

Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley are thrilled that their eldest son, Jonathan—who, like his father, has not always been the most socially adept—has been invited to stay with his former schoolmate, John Willoughby. Jonathan himself is decidedly less taken with the notion of having to spend extended time under the roof of his old bully, but that all changes when he finds himself reunited with his fellow amateur sleuth, the radiant Miss Tilney. And when shortly thereafter, Willoughby’s new wife—whom he married for her fortune—dies horribly at the party meant to welcome her to town.

With rumors flying and Marianne—known to be both unstable and previously jilted by the dead woman’s newly made widower—under increased suspicion, Jonathan and Juliet must team up once more to uncover the murderer. But as they collect clues and close in on suspects, eerie incidents suggest that the killer may strike again, and that the pair are in far graver danger than they or their families could imagine.

  • The Reluctant Countess

The Reluctant Countess by Eloisa James

The Reluctant Countess by Eloisa James is $2.99! This is book two in the Would-Be Wallflowers series. I feel like James’s releases the last few years have flown under the radar. Have you been keeping up?

New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James returns to the Would-Be Wallflowers series with an enemies-to-lovers romance between a proper earl and an entirely improper lady—whom he can’t stop thinking about.

Giles Renwick, Earl of Lilford, has never made a fool of himself over a woman—until he meets Lady Yasmin Régnier. Yasmin is ineligible for his attentions in every way: not as a wife, certainly not as a mistress (she is a lady!), nor even as a friend, since they vehemently dislike each other. Her gowns are too low, and her skirts are dampened to cling to admittedly lovely thighs. She loves to gossip—and giggle.

She isn’t dignified, or polite, or even truly British, given that her father’s French ancestry clearly predominated. Not to mention the fact that her mother had been one of Napoleon’s mistresses, a fact she makes no effort to hide.

    So what—in heaven’s name—possesses him to propose?

And what will he do if she says yes?

  • The Book Eaters

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean is $2.99! I mentioned this on Get Rec’d for people who want horror with bookish themes. Please check triggers for this one, as I remember it being pretty graphic!

Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book’s content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.

Devon is part of The Family, an old and reclusive clan of book eaters. Her brothers grow up feasting on stories of valor and adventure, and Devon—like all other book eater women—is raised on a carefully curated diet of fairytales and cautionary stories.

But real life doesn’t always come with happy endings, as Devon learns when her son is born with a rare and darker kind of hunger—not for books, but for human minds.

  • In a Badger Way

In a Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston

In a Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston is $2.99! This is the second book in the Honey Badgers series and Sarah gave it a B:

Seriously. I had the best time reading this story, and flying through all the chaos with the characters. It was an incredible amount of giddy, zany fun.

On the other hand, as a romance, it’s not as strong.

Petite, kind, brilliant, and young, Stevie is nothing like the usual women bodyguard Shen Li is interested in. Even more surprising, the youngest of the lethal, ball-busting, and beautiful MacKilligan sisters is terrified of bears. But she’s not terrified of pandas. She loves pandas.

Which means that whether Shen wants her to or not, she simply won’t stop cuddling him. He isn’t some stuffed Giant Panda, ya know! He is a Giant Panda shifter. He deserves respect and personal space. Something that little hybrid is completely ignoring.

But Stevie has a way of finding trouble. Like going undercover to take down a scientist experimenting on other shifters. For what, Shen doesn’t want to know, but they’d better find out. And fast. Stevie might be the least violent of the honey badger sisters, but she’s the most dangerous to Shen’s peace of mind. Because she has absolutely no idea how much trouble they’re in . . . or just how damn adorable she is.

  1. Kat says:

“The Book Eaters” has one of the most misleading blurbs I have ever read–it sounds like it will be whimsical and cute, and instead it is SO dark. I think it’s worth a read if that’s your jam, but DEFINITELY check the trigger warnings first!

  2. Mary says:

“In a Badger Way” is a lot of fun. I really like Shelley Laurenston’s books and have read most of them.

  5. Castiron says:

It’s been a while since I read it, but I think The Late Mrs. Willoughby would work okay as a standalone; the things you need to know from the first book are in the blurb.

I like Juliet and Jonathan very much and will keep reading the series for them; the mystery was okay.

  6. flchen1 says:

    $.99:
    – Got Me Wishing (Vet Shop Boys Book 2) by Casey Cox

  7. Kris Bock says:

I read The Late Mrs Willoughby without reading the first one and that was fine. It probably spoils things in the first one though.
