  • Nice Dragons Finish Last

Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron

RECOMMENDED: Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron is $2.49! This was mentioned on a previous podcast and a previous Whatcha Reading. The second book of Aaron’s we’ve featured this week and the comments had good things to say about Aaron’s storytelling. Sarah loved this book:

Nice Dragons Finish Last is fast-moving fantasy adventure with outstanding worldbuilding. It’s an experience to read.

As the smallest dragon in the Heartstriker clan, Julius survives by a simple code: keep quiet, don’t cause trouble, and stay out of the way of bigger dragons. But this meek behavior doesn’t fly in a family of ambitious magical predators, and his mother, Bethesda the Heartstriker, has finally reached the end of her patience.

Now, sealed in human form and banished to the DFZ–a vertical metropolis built on the ruins of Old Detroit–Julius has one month to prove that he can be a ruthless dragon or kiss his true shape goodbye forever. But in a city of modern mages and vengeful spirits where dragons are considered monsters to be exterminated, he’s going to need some serious help to survive this test.

He only hopes humans are more trustworthy than dragons…

  • Planes, Trains, and All the Feels

Planes, Trains, and All the Feels by Livy Hart

Planes, Trains, and All the Feels by Livy Hart is 99c! Neile first alerted me to this sale in the comments of another sale post, claiming that Hart is becoming a new contemporary romance favorite. I definitely took a peek and bought this one for myself!

Fans of Christina Lauren and Tessa Bailey will adore this witty and unforgettable rom-com about skyways, highways, and all the perfectly wrong ways to fall in love.

As the black sheep of the family, choreographer Cassidy Bliss vowed she’d do anything to get home in time to help with her sister’s wedding and avoid family disappointment…again. She just never expected “anything” would involve sharing the last rental car with the jerk who cut her off in line at the airport this morning. But horrible times apparently call for here-goes-nothing measures.

Driving across the country with Luke “life can be solved with a spreadsheet” Carlisle must be a penance for some crime she committed. Because the second he opens his mouth, it’s all she can do to not maim him with her carry-on. But somewhere between his surprisingly thoughtful snack sharing and his uncanny ability to see straight to the core of her, her feelings go unchecked.

Suddenly, their crackling chemistry is just one more thing they have to navigate—and it couldn’t come at a worse time. But after a lifetime of letting the expectations and needs of others drive her life, Cassidy must decide if she’s ready to take the wheel once and for all.

  • A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins is $2.99!  Some readers loved the balance of romance and mystery, while others wanted more excitement from the plot.

An intrepid female reporter matches wits with a serious, sexy detective in award-winning author Manda Collin’s fun and flirty historical rom-com, perfect for readers of Evie Dunmore, Julia Quinn, and Tessa Dare!

England, 1865 : As one of England’s most notorious newspaper columnists, Lady Katherine Bascomb believes knowledge is power. And she’s determined to inform and educate the ladies of London on the nefarious-and deadly-criminals who are praying on the fairer sex. When her reporting leads to the arrest of a notorious killer, however, Katherine flees to a country house party to escape her newfound notoriety-only to witness a murder on her very first night. And when the lead detective accuses Katherine of inflaming-rather than informing-the public with her column, she vows to prove him wrong.

Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham’s refusal to compromise his investigations nearly cost him his own career, and he blames Katherine. To avoid bad publicity, his superiors are pressuring him to solve cases quickly rather than correctly. When he discovers she’s the key witness in a new crime, he’s determined to prevent the beautiful widow from once again wreaking havoc on his case. Yet as Katherine proves surprisingly insightful and Andrew impresses Katherine with his lethal competency, both are forced to admit the fire between them is more flirtatious than furious. But to explore the passion between them, they’ll need to catch a killer.

  • Queen Bee

    Queen Bee by Amalie Howard

Queen Bee by Amalie Howard is $1.99! This is a YA historical romance with inspiration from The Count of Monte Cristo. I think this is Howard’s first YA novel, but has a few adult historical romances in her backlist.

A teen girl seeking retribution against her backstabbing former best friend finds her plans slightly derailed once she catches the eye of a familiar, handsome marquess. Bestselling author Amalie Howard delivers a delightful, anti-historical Regency-era romp that’s Bridgerton meets The Count of Monte Cristo!

Lady Ela Dalvi knows the exact moment her life was forever changed—when her best friend, Poppy, betrayed her without qualm over a boy, the son of a duke. She was sent away in disgrace, her reputation ruined.

Nearly three years later, eighteen-year-old Ela is consumed with bitterness and a desire for . . . revenge. Her enemy is quickly joining the crème de la crème of high society while she withers away in the English countryside.

With an audacious plan to get even, Ela disguises herself as a mysterious heiress and infiltrates London’s elite. But when Ela reunites with the only boy she’s ever loved, she begins to question whether vengeance is still her greatest desire.

In this complicated game of real-life chess, Ela must choose her next move: Finally bring down the queen or capture the king’s heart?

The Manda Collins is giving me “Miss Scarlet and The Duke” vibes — how high is the steam level because I’ve been looking for a steamy romance with these vibes.

  2. Susan/DC says:

Re the Manda Collins: Thought this wasn’t terrible but not great either. Hadn’t made a connection to “Miss Scarlet and the Duke” when I read it, but perhaps if I’d pictured Stuart Martin as the Detective Inspector while reading I’d have liked the book more (an aside: not sure I’ll watch the show going forward because I’ll miss both Martin and the character of the Duke – even more as the backstory of how they met was told in a touching episode last season). Found a couple of things problematic in the book. First of all, the motivation for the murders was a stretch, as the intended audience would probably have no clue these crimes were connected to him so would have no reaction of guilt, shame, or anything. Second, one of the villains engineered an invitation to the same house party as Kate, and it’s clear early on from the way the person is depicted that the character is a prime suspect, although their actual identity isn’t known. Of course, as always, YMMV

Thanks for the tips about this book!
