  • The Black Lily

The Black Lily by Juliette Cross

The Black Lily by Juliette Cross is 99c! This is a Cinderella-esque vampire romance and the rest of the series has fairy tale influences. I really enjoyed this book, but Ellen wound up reviewing it and liked it less, giving it a C.

Cinderella like you’ve never seen before…

With the threat of the vampire monarchy becoming stronger every day, the Black Lily must take drastic measures. As the leader of the underground resistance, Arabelle concocts the perfect idea to gain the attention of the Glass Tower. Her plan? Attend the vampire prince’s blood ball and kill him. Fortunately for Prince Marius, her assassination goes awry, and Arabelle flees, leaving behind only her dagger.

Marius is desperate to find the woman whose kiss turned into attempted murder, hunting for the mysterious assassin he can’t push out of his mind. But what he uncovers could change the course of his life forever…

  • Booked on a Feeling

Booked on a Feeling by Jayci Lee

Booked on a Feeling by Jayci Lee is $3.99! This is book three in the A Sweet Mess series, though I think all work fine as a standalone. This one has a friends to lovers romance.

Jayci Lee’s romcom Booked on a Feeling features an overachieving lawyer. A failing bookstore. A childhood friend. And the chance of a lifetime…

Lizzy “Overachiever” Chung, Esq. has her life mapped out neatly:
    * Become a lawyer. Check.
    * Join a prestigious law firm. Check.
    * Make partner. In progress.

If all goes to plan, she will check off that last box in a couple years, make her parents proud, and live a successful, fulfilled life in L.A. What was not in her plans was passing out from a panic attack during a pivotal moment in her career. A few deep breaths and a four hour drive later, Lizzy is in Weldon for three weeks to shed the burnout and figure out what went wrong. And what better place to recharge than the small California town where she spent her childhood summers with her best friend, Jack Park.

Jack Park didn’t expect to see Lizzy back in Weldon, but now he’s got three weeks to spend with the girl of his dreams. Except she doesn’t know of his decades-long crush on her–and he intends to keep it that way. She’s a high-powered attorney who lives in L.A. and he’s a bookkeeper at his family’s brewery who never left his hometown. He can’t risk their friendship on a long shot. Can he? When Lizzy decides that the local bookstore needs a little revamp, of course, Jack is going to help her bring it back to life. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to ignore there might be more than just friendship among the dusty shelves and books…

Sometimes the path to the rest of your life has been in front of you all along.

  • The Boxing Baroness

The Boxing Baroness by Minerva Spencer

RECOMMENDED: The Boxing Baroness by Minerva Spencer is $3.99! Carrie reviewed this and gave it B+:

The more grounded in history the novel was, the more I liked it. For instance, I enjoyed seeing how Marianne trained every day. However, people with more patience for plot than I will love the same increasing complications that just made me want to take a nap. There’s something here for everyone and I look forward to the next book, The Dueling Duchess.

Inspired by the real-life Boxing Baroness, acclaimed author Minerva Spencer sparkles with this brilliantly imagined story of her romance with an infuriating duke in the first of a witty, Regency-set, feminist series exploring the role of women in a rigidly patriarchal society. A new generation of readers and Bridgerton fans will delight in the rapier sharp wit, sexual fireworks, and thought-provoking entertainment of The Boxing Baroness.

Magnetic and educated, Marianne Simpson has the manner of a lady and the looks of a lover, not a fighter. Neither of which explains her occupation as a boxer in her uncle’s circus, Farnham’s Fantastical Female Fayre. Nonetheless, when St. John Powell, the exquisitely handsome Duke of Staunton, begins turning up at her shows, she finds herself dangerously distracted by the powerful peer’s mysterious presence. With her safety at stake, Marianne’s days in the ring are numbered. But how long can she fight her attraction to the man the ton calls Lord Flawless?

St. John Powell doesn’t just want Marianne Simpson, he needs her … to rescue his brother, who is being held for ransom by a treasonous English baron—the man all of Britain knows as the Rake of Rakes.

No matter how little Marianne wants to see her duplicitous ex-lover, the man responsible for the humiliating nickname the Boxing Baroness, St. John must convince her. Even if it means climbing into the ring with the beautiful boxer and taking everything she’s got . . .

  • Slouch Witch

    Slouch Witch by Helen Harper

RECOMMENDED: Slouch Witch by Helen Harper is $1.49! I bought this urban fantasy on a whim when it was on sale, and even convinced Sarah to buy it. We squeed over it in a previous podcast, but are really eh on the next book. The first has a non-cliffhanger ending, but it wasn’t satisfying in terms of the romance.

Hard Work Will Pay Off Later. Laziness Pays Off Now.

Let’s get one thing straight – Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact, she’s probably the last witch in the world who you’d call if you needed a magical helping hand. If it were down to Ivy, she’d spend all day every day on her sofa where she could watch TV, munch junk food and talk to her feline familiar to her heart’s content.

However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she’s yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch, the investigative department of the Hallowed Order of Magical Enlightenment. Her problems are quadrupled when a valuable object is stolen right from under the Order’s noses.

It doesn’t exactly help that she’s been magically bound to Adeptus Exemptus Raphael Winter. He might have piercing sapphire eyes and a body which a cover model would be proud of but, as far as Ivy’s concerned, he’s a walking advertisement for the joyless perils of too much witch-work.

And if he makes her go to the gym again, she’s definitely going to turn him into a frog.

  1. JenM says:

FIELD RULES by Carla Luna is currently free. The author is an archeologist and this series, Romancing the Ruins, features archeologist MCs, plenty of competency pron on the part of both leads, and is set in places like Troy and Pompeii.

  2. MaryK says:

I DNF’d The Black Lily. It’s been a while, but from what I remember it had a promising beginning that devolved into frustrating cardboard. Like Ellen, I’m a fan of sexy vampires and fantasy romance so I was very interested and then very disappointed.

  5. Kit C. says:

I enjoyed Slouch Witch a lot for the plot. The romance is more like a slow burn so the first book just makes it clear the leads are interested in each other.

I then bought the rest of the books in the series and… it’s not great. What’s charming about Ivy’s laziness in Book 1 veers into slob territory and the mysteries/plots aren’t particularly well-written. Unfortunately the series stops without a HFN/HEA or resolution for the leads. I’d say the first book is fine at that sale price, but I’d suggest borrowing the rest.

  6. Kolforin says:

The first paragraph of “Slouch Witch”‘s description reminds me of “Third Time Lucky And Other Stories of the Most Powerful Wizard in the World” by Tanya Huff (which is set in its own fantasy world):

    > There’s a lot of responsibility involved with being the most powerful wizard in the world, and Magdelene wants nothing to do with any of it. Lazy, lusty, and more likely to be found lying in the sun than casting runes or sacrificing unfortunate goats, she’d really rather avoid dealing with challenges, errant apprentices, demons, dragons, death, and bureaucracy.

  7. Liz says:

Not a romance or even trashy, but Saeed Jones’s memoir HOW WE FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES is $1.99 (on all ebook platforms, looks like)!!

  8. Lauren says:

Not me being interested in Slouch Witch, only to find out I bought the entire series in a $4 box set THREE YEARS AGO
