Gideon the Ninth
RECOMMENDED: Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir is $1.99. AJ and I did a lot of squeeing about this one on a podcast episode. Will you understand what’s going on? Probably not, but you’ll have a lot of fun being clueless. I also gave it a B+:
Gideon the Ninth is a unique and bloody bananapants book, and I do think it’s worth a reader’s curiosity. Gideon is an unforgettable protagonist.
Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you’ll ever have with a skeleton.
The Emperor needs necromancers.
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
Of course, some things are better left dead.

What Moves the Dead
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher is $2.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. Kingfisher is a bit of an auto-buy around you. Did any of you pick this one up?
From the award-winning author of The Twisted Ones comes a gripping and atmospheric retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
When Alex Easton, a retired soldier, receives word that their childhood friend Madeline Usher is dying, they race to the ancestral home of the Ushers in the remote countryside of Ruritania.
What they find there is a nightmare of fungal growths and possessed wildlife, surrounding a dark, pulsing lake. Madeline sleepwalks and speaks in strange voices at night, and her brother Roderick is consumed with a mysterious malady of the nerves.
Aided by a redoubtable British mycologist and a baffled American doctor, Alex must unravel the secret of the House of Usher before it consumes them all.

Winter’s Orbit
RECOMMENDED: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell is $2.99! Ellen read this one and gave it an A-:
If you enjoy sci-fi, arranged marriage/marriage of convenience stories, courtly intrigues, and/or slow-burn romance, I think Winter’s Orbit is a great choice.
Ancillary Justice meets Red, White & Royal Blue in Everina Maxwell’s exciting debut.
While the Iskat Empire has long dominated the system through treaties and political alliances, several planets, including Thea, have begun to chafe under Iskat’s rule. When tragedy befalls Imperial Prince Taam, his Thean widower, Jainan, is rushed into an arranged marriage with Taam’s cousin, the disreputable Kiem, in a bid to keep the rising hostilities between the two worlds under control.
But when it comes to light that Prince Taam’s death may not have been an accident, and that Jainan himself may be a suspect, the unlikely pair must overcome their misgivings and learn to trust one another as they navigate the perils of the Iskat court, try to solve a murder, and prevent an interplanetary war… all while dealing with their growing feelings for each other.

Something in the Heir
Something in the Heir by Suzanne Enoch is $2.99! The hero and heroine have been married for eight years, after a marriage of convenience. But whoops, the heroine invented two fake children and now has to produce them for her reclusive grandfather before his birthday.
Emmeline and William Pershing have enjoyed a perfectly convenient marriage for eight years. Their relationship is a seamless blend of their talents and goals. They’ve settled into separate, well-ordered lives beneath the same roof, and are content to stay that way—or so Emmeline thinks. And if William has secretly longed for a bit more from the woman he adores, he’s managed to be content with her supreme skills as a hostess and planner, which has helped him advance his career.
Then when Emmeline’s grandfather, the reclusive Duke of Welshire, summons them both for his birthday celebration and demands they bring their two little angelic children, William is stunned to discover that his very proper wife invented not one, but two heirs to fulfill the agreement for living at Winnover. But surely if Emmeline and William team up and borrow two cherubs to call their own, what could go wrong? Enter George, age 8, and Rose, 5—the two most unruly orphans in Britain.
As the insanity unfolds, their careful, professional arrangement takes some surprisingly intimate turns as well. Perhaps it takes a bit of madness to create the perfect happily ever after.

Can’t recommend Winter’s Orbit highly enough. It’s become one of my favorites. (To the point that I own the sequel but keep putting off actually reading it because I worry it can’t possibly live up to the first one?) Sci-fi isn’t generally my thing, but it has wonderful characters, amazing worldbuilding, and a sweet slow burn romance. I devoured it in a day because I absolutely couldn’t put it down.
Intrigued by the Enoch – I’ve seen plenty of fake relationships but fake *kids* is a new one!
I read What Moves the Dead, and it was great, but that cover wins some sort of ‘most horrifying bunnies’ award.
Winter’s Orbit is so wonderful. One of my favorite space operas ever.
@Loramir. I felt the same way and was a little hesitant to start it, but I loved Ocean’s Echo even more! It was so great. It takes place in a totally different part of the galaxy, so it was quite different, but so interesting.
I read Kingfisher’s The Twisted Ones and it was too scary for me. She can produce seriously frightening things, so if you’re sensitive to that kind of thing, I’d advise either only reading it in the daytime or skipping it altogether.
I loved Winter’s Orbit too, and my hold for Ocean’s Echo just arrived, so…

I enjoyed Winter’s Orbit but liked Ocean’s Echo even more. Agreeing with @Lisa that it is set elsewhere and features different characters.
Loved Gideon the Ninth, loved Winter’s Orbit (and the sequel). I love T Kingfisher but that one is too scary for me, tragically.
The Enoch otoh was unbearable. The entitlement, idiocy, and selfishness of the main characters was intensely off putting, and that was before the plot moppets showed up and it really went to hell in a hand basket.
I listened to What Moves the Dead because it’s narrated by Avi Roque and he was FABULOUS narrating Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. I, too, loved Winter’s Orbit and need to read Ocen’s Echo.
@flchen1: thanks for the heads-up. I just grabbed the Kate Meader box set. She’s hit-or-miss for me, but for 99-cents, it’s a no-brainer even if I only end up reading one of the books.

Some great recommendations here, and I loved the Kingfisher book, even though the horror aspect of it was definitely squirm-in-your-seat kind of stuff. Great world building and a non-binary protagonist. Kingfisher is an autobuy for me!
