Contemporary Romances & a Historical Romance

  • A Daring Pursuit

A Daring Pursuit by Kate Bateman

A Daring Pursuit by Kate Bateman is $2.99! This is book two in the Ruthless Rivals series. I’ve enjoyed many of Bateman’s historical romances, though haven’t tried this series yet.

The Davies and Montgomery families have been locked in an ancient feud. But it’s a thin line between love and hate in Kate Bateman’s A Daring Pursuit.

    TWO ENEMIES
Carys Davies is doing everything in her power to avoid marriage. Staying single is the only way to hide the secret that could ruin her—and her family—if it was revealed. For the past two seasons she’s scandalized the ton with her outrageous outfits and brazen ways in a futile bid to deter potential suitors. Outwardly confident and carefree, inside she’s disillusioned with both men and love. There’s only one person who’s never bought her act—the only man who makes her heart race: Tristan Montgomery, one of her family’s greatest rivals.

    ONE SCANDALOUS BARGAIN
Wickedly proper architect Tristan needs a respectable woman to wed, but he’s never stopped wanting bold, red-headed Carys. When she mockingly challenges him to show her what she’s missing by not getting married, Tristan shocks them both by accepting her indecent proposal: one week of clandestine meetings, after which they’ll go their separate ways. But kissing each other is almost as much fun as arguing, and their affair burns hotter than either of them expects. When they find themselves embroiled in a treasonous plot, can they trust each other with their hearts, their secrets…and their lives?

  • Couldn’t Ask for More

Couldn’t Ask for More by Kianna Alexander

Couldn’t Ask for More by Kianna Alexander is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with fake dating. It also appears that both characters work in fashion. Have you read this one?

From the celebrated author of This Tender Melody comes a sensual, slow-burn African American romance that explores what happens when hard-working, successful entrepreneurs mix business with pleasure.

What should you do when your publicist tells everyone in the fashion world about your (nonexistent) fiancé? Keep calm and start damage control:

    – Call your brother’s hot best friend and get him to pose as your fake fiancé
    – Inadvertently set a wedding date while giving an interview
    – Jet set around the world taking meetings and staying in posh hotels—of course one bed will be fine, you’re engaged, right?
    – Never admit that your fake relationship has started to feel very real…

Bryan James’s job is on thin ice unless he can secure a contract with a popular design house. He knows his best friend’s sister can help?but her terms are more than he bargained for.

Alexis Devers’s debut fashion line is a hit. But when Alexis’s publicist tells buyers that it landed her a wealthy, gorgeous fiancé, Alexis needs to come up with one?fast. Bryan’s offer to strike a deal is impeccably timed.

It’s the perfect plan…until feelings start getting in the way. Suddenly, the pitfalls of mixing business and pleasure become much more real than either of them expected…

  • Hard Pressed

    Hard Pressed by Kate Canterbary

Hard Pressed by Kate Canterbary is $2.49 at Amazon! It recently underwent a cover redesign. This is the second book in the Talbott’s Cove small town romance series. I know both this author, series, and book in particular have been recommended in the comments.

    Dear Jackson,

I’m leaving you this note because I know you’re very busy and I don’t want to waste the town sheriff’s time. Lord knows I’ve already wasted enough of it.

Thank you for taking me home last night and…everything else. I made you a basket of wild blueberry muffins for your trouble. That seemed like the appropriate baked good for getting naked in your living room.

I wasn’t myself last night. I didn’t mean to kiss you or fondle your backside or ask all those intimate questions. Thank you for pretending to enjoy it.

It was very noble of you to sleep on the couch while I was starfished on your bed. I couldn’t help but notice it’s quite large. The bed, that is. I swear, I didn’t notice anything else when I let myself out this morning.

As you know, Talbott’s Cove is a ridiculously small town and there’s no chance we can avoid each other. Not that I’d want to avoid you, of course, but I’m not sure I can look at you without thinking of the forty different ways I made a fool of myself.

Instead of avoidance, let’s try to be friends. We’ll forget all about last night…if that’s what you want.

Please burn this note after you read it—
    Annette

p.s. I whipped up some cinnamon buns, too. Please enjoy them. I’m not sure why, but I couldn’t get buns out of my mind today.

  • Bad Bachelor

    Bad Bachelor by Stefanie London

Bad Bachelor by Stefanie London is $2.99! Not terribly loving the new cover. I mostly enjoyed this one, but I had to overcome some issues to really get to the good stuff. Your mileage may vary depending on your reading patience. You can read my review here, where I gave it a B-.

Everybody’s talking about the hot new app reviewing New York’s most eligible bachelors. But why focus on prince charming when you can read the latest dirt on the lowest-ranked “Bad Bachelors”—NYC’s most notorious bad boys.

If one more person mentions Bad Bachelors to Reed McMahon, someone’s gonna get hurt. A PR whiz, Reed is known as an ‘image fixer’ but his womanizing ways have caught up with him. What he needs is a PR miracle of his own.

When Reed strolls into Darcy Greer’s workplace offering to help save the struggling library, she isn’t buying it. The prickly Brooklynite knows Reed is exactly the kind of guy she should avoid. But the library does need his help. As she reluctantly works with Reed, she realizes there’s more to a man than his reputation. Maybe, just maybe, Bad Bachelor #1 is THE one for her.

  1. Darlynne says:

As a new Kate Canterbary fan, I struggled with and eventually gave up on HARD PRESSED. From the beginning, the hero cannot stop his pants feelings for the heroine, even when doing so is the only appropriate response to someone nearly blackout drunk. Does it get better? Does she become less … I can’t even think of the right word. Does he act like less of a dick? All opinions welcome.

  2. Laurel says:

Jasper Fforde’s Lost in a Good Book is $1.99 today at Amazon. This is the second book in the Thursday Next series, a fun series for lovers of books, particularly British classics.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Darlynne: I liked HARD PRESSED—and didn’t have a problem with the hero or the heroine—but I don’t think it’s anywhere near as good as FAR CRY, which is the third book in the series and also on sale right now.

  4. flchen1 says:

    Currently on sale for $.99:
    – A Book A Day Presents: Color Theory 2: Love, The Tie That Binds
Renita McKinney, A.L. Jackson, A.M. Kusi, Aleatha Romig, Amanda Shelley, Chelle Bliss, Daryl Banner, Eden Butler, Elyse Kelly, Kat Mizera, Brenda Rothert, Kenna Rey, Shannon Bruno, T.K. Leigh, Taylor Danae Colbert
    – Mansplainer (Last Man Standing Book 3) by Avery Flynn
    – The Dark Moon (Atrophy Book 3) by Jess Anastasi
    And free:
    – The Bromance Zone: A Friends to Lovers MM Standalone by Lauren Blakely — I found her free short not memorable, but am willing to see whether her full-length book is more compelling (for free…)

  5. spinsterrevival says:

I realized I own (freebie at some point) HARD PRESSED but haven’t read it, although I loved her MM in the same series, FRESH CATCH.

We really need to discuss these cover changes. I identify as ace, so theoretically I think I’m supposed to like these bland flowery covers, but the other ones of lovely seaside photos with backsides of handsome men were way more aesthetically pleasing.

Is this some weird return to prudery or some TikTok thing that I’m not getting (I admit I haven’t been on it)? I’m pretty blah on all illustrated covers in general, but these are just unattractive wallpaper, and I just don’t get it. Thanks for coming to my rant. 🙂

  6. LML says:

@spinsterrevival, I didn’t have the same thought about flowery covers and prudery, but what a good point you made! It gives me a new way of thinking about not only flowery but also cartoon covers.

As an aside, I read and enjoyed Hard Pressed, but the new cover reminds me of a charming, illustrated-with-drawings cookbook of berry desserts that I checked out of the library once.

  7. Lisa F says:

I read Couldn’t Ask for More and loved it! The heroes and heroines all know each other from their fraternity/sorority days.
