You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This HaBO comes from Sophie, who wants to find this contemporary romance:
I’m hoping you can help me find a book I’m dying to re-read.
The book is a contemporary romance about a pro (or ex pro??) baseball player who goes to a remote island in Ireland (or maybe it’s Scotland??) to recover from his alcohol (or maybe drug?) addiction. He falls for the woman who is replacing the local doctor. At one point they are trapped in a cave together and he starts getting the shakes/sweats as he goes into withdrawal after going so long without a fix, and the heroine doesn’t know about his addiction and is worried he’s really sick.
Sadly, those are about the only details that I remember, other than the fact that I loved the story.
Ring any bells?
I’m pretty sure this is Ella James’s COVET. Here’s the blurb:
“Homer Carnegie. Admit it–you know my name. Your kid’s got my e-trading card. Your husband sits up straighter when I stroll onto the TV screen. He knows I’m going to crack the bat and save the day. Even your grandma’s jonesing for my autograph. But women my age? They’re the worst. Or would that be the best?
It’s not my fault they line up at the door. They catch my balls all right, two at a time sometimes. Believe me, everybody wins.
At least they did–until the video. I heard TMZ paid a million for a bird’s eye view of Homer on his A-game. The only folks who didn’t watch with eager eyes? Red Sox management. They want me benched, or worse, shipped off to rehab.
It’s a long story, what happens next. How I end up on a boat, bound for the world’s most remote island: Tristan da Cunha. Just a speck of dust in the Atlantic.
Except my heart is there.
I don’t know that when I step onto the boat.
I don’t know a lot of things.
What I’ll covet…
What I’ll lose…”
I read it a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s a beautifully written, complex story about two very different people who happen to find an unlikely connection. And I love it when a book introduces me to a place I knew nothing about, in this case Tristan da Cunha, the world’s most remote inhabited island. I will caution that the blurb makes the book seem somewhat more lighthearted than it is—there’s some fairly dark stuff going on, not just the hero’s addictions, but the heroine’s abusive marriage (cw/tw), and the things that fester in an isolated place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. Even if COVET isn’t the HABO, I still highly recommend it.
Wait, a baseball player named Homer?? Please tell me that’s a nickname…? lol
(At some point I would enjoy a list of “most ridiculous names of romance characters” list. People have recently mentioned a heroine named Maybe and a couple named Cyn and Chastity, which, plus a baseball player named Homer seems like a promising start to the list!)
HaBO or not, I am going to click that! I haven’t read Ella James in a bit. I loved her dark fairytale retellings serials, but have backed away in favor of the historicals.
“Homer Carnegie” is a pretty great name, I will say this
YES!!! It IS Covet, by Ella James. Thank you! I am thrilled that someone was able to help me figure this out so quickly. DiscoDollyDeb, you are a rock star. Guess what I’ll be re-reading this wkd : )
My husband has a passion for Tristan de Cunha! It is a fascinating culture – he follows their social media and reads everything he can find on it. It is definitely a long way away from everything – I bought him a t-shirt from there last year for Christmas and it took 8 months to arrive. I’m tempted to find this book for him. He can skip the steamy bits. And the baseball.
