  • Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

  • How to Fail at Flirting

How to Fail at Flirting by Denise Williams

How to Fail at Flirting by Denis Williams is $3.50! This was featured on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Warning for this one as the heroine has left an abusive relationship and it plays a significant part of the romance, with the heroine working through her trauma.

One daring to-do list and a crash course in flirtation turn a Type A overachiever’s world upside down.

When her flailing department lands on the university’s chopping block, Professor Naya Turner’s friends convince her to shed her frumpy cardigan for an evening on the town. For one night her focus will stray from her demanding job and she’ll tackle a new kind of to-do list. When she meets a charming stranger in town on business, he presents the perfect opportunity to check off the items on her list. Let the guy buy her a drink. Check. Try something new. Check. A no-strings-attached hookup. Check…almost.

Jake makes her laugh and challenges Naya to rebuild her confidence, which was left toppled by her abusive ex-boyfriend. Soon she’s flirting with the chance at a more serious romantic relationship—except nothing can be that easy. The complicated strings around her dating Jake might destroy her career.

Naya has two options. She can protect her professional reputation and return to her old life or she can flirt with the unknown and stay with the person who makes her feel like she’s finally living again.

  • World of Wonders

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil is $2.99! This is another Kindle Daily Deal. What a coincidence as I just mentioned this on the latest Get Rec’d!

From beloved, award-winning poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil comes a debut work of nonfiction–a collection of essays about the natural world, and the way its inhabitants can teach, support, and inspire us.

As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted–no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape–she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance.

“What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts.

Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy.

  • One Dance with a Duke

One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare

One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the first book in Dare’s Stud Club trilogy and features a horse breeder hero. Readers say this one is slow to start with, but recommend powering through! There is a marriage of convenience aspect that reviewers really enjoyed.

In One Dance with a Duke—the first novel in Tessa Dare’s delightful new trilogy—secrets and scandals tempt the irresistible rogues of the Stud Club to gamble everything for love.

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members—yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke—until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?

  1. EJ says:

I’m already stressed over what I am totally sure are the realistic circumstances dating someone could destroy her academic career…

Oh wait is he her student??

  2. lovesotters says:

EJ—who he is is a spoiler but he’s not a student and they are similar in age, if I recall correctly. It’s a very good but not relaxing read!

  3. hng23 says:

I see the next trend in historical covers is surfacing: Bridgerton-style photo covers. Boring, but still better than cartoons.

  4. Star says:

Just a quick PSA for those interested in the Dare that this is one of her earlier books, before she started writing the lighter comic stuff she’s best known for. Her older stuff is darker and a lot less… not sure of the right word tbh, referential? so if you’re a fan of her recent work, don’t pick this one up expecting more of the same. Conversely, if your tastes are more like mine, you might like this one better than her more recent work.

  5. EJ says:

    @lovesotters

Thanks for clearing that up! I might check it out.

  6. Neile says:

I like the Denise Williams book a lot and recommend both of her full-length novels and the newly released audio only (so far) novella. HOW TO FAIL AT FLIRTING does include some tough stuff but it’s dealt with in a realistic and optimistic way. I didn’t find that the overall tone of the book weighed me down at all. In fact, I read it through the library and ended up buying it the last time it was on sale because I think I’m likely to re-read it.

  7. Lynn S says:

@ Star Yes, that is well said. I struggled a bit with this one. I ultimately gave the book 3 stars. Here are a few notes I jotted down:

I am a big Tessa Dare fan but this is an earlier series and I can’t lie. It took me forever to read. I didn’t like the way Spencer, the Duke, behaved at times. I did like Amelia a lot. But something about their romance felt off. However I ultimately enjoyed some of the subplots: the horse, the Stud Club, the murder, Claudia, Amelia’s worthless brother Jack. All of those plots led me to quickly finish to the end.

I will say I have the other 2 books in the series and am excited to read them. I liked the side characters a lot. And of course, there is a murder which doesn’t get solved until Book 3. But yes, definitely less bubbly than later works by Tessa Dare.

  8. MaryK says:

FYI, One Dance with a Duke was identified in the recent HaBO: Sexy Glove Removal Scene as a book where the hero sexily removes his gloves.

  9. Vicki says:

One Dance with the Duke was dark but I really enjoyed it. And, yes, the glove scene was beyond hot.

  10. Vicki says:

Hate to double post but I just noticed The Face on the Milk Carton is a KDD for 1.99. I used to just love Carolyn B.Cooney’s YA and this series was nicely done, I thought.
