  • The Princess Knight

The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken

The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken is $1.99 and it’s also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which feature a ton of romance! This is book two in the Scarred Earth SagaI loved and reviewed the first book and Lara reviewed this one, giving it a B:

The cast of characters EXPLODES in this book. Pay attention to each and every new character; they are all important. We pop into a lot of different POVs which can be a little dizzying, but adds beautifully to the immersive world building of it all.

In New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken’s gripping new fantasy romance series, the Blacksmith Queen must confront armies and pretenders desperate to take her new-won crown. But with the Princess Knight at her side and a centaur warrior clan at her back, she’ll risk everything for victory . . .

    LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

Gemma Smythe dedicated her life to the glory of battle. With her fellow War Monks, she worshipped the war gods, rained destruction on her enemies, and raised the dead when the fancy took her. Until her sister Keeley became the prophesied Blacksmith Queen, and Gemma broke faith with her order to journey to the Amichai Mountain and fight by Keeley’s side.

The Amichai warriors are an unruly, never-to-be-tamed lot, especially their leader-in-waiting, Quinn. But when the War Monks declare support for Gemma’s ruthless younger sister Beatrix, the immaturity of her key ally is the least of Gemma’s problems. She has to get to the grand masters, dispel their grudge against her, and persuade them to fight for Keeley and justice. If her conviction can’t sway them, perhaps Quinn’s irritating, irreverent, clearly unhinged, ferocity will win the day . . .

  • Skinwalker

    Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

Skinwalker by Faith Hunter is $1.99! It’s the first book in the urban fantasy Jane Yellowrock series. Reviewers commented that this definitely suffers from “first book-itis,” where a bulk of the book deals with worldbuilding, but the action really picks up during the last half of the book.

First in a brand new series from the author of the rogue mage novels

Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind-a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she’s been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie’s Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who’s killing other vamps…

  • Dead Dead Girls

Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia

Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia is $1.99! This is the first book in a historical mystery series set in 1920s Harlem. There’s also a sapphic romance! We featured this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet.

The start of an exciting new historical mystery series set in 1920s Harlem featuring Louise Lloyd, a young black woman caught up in a series of murders way too close to home…

Harlem, 1926. Young black girls like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead.

Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She’s succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie’s Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Manhattan’s hottest speakeasy. Louise’s friends might say she’s running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don’t tell her that.

When a girl turns up dead in front of the café, Louise is forced to confront something she’s been trying to ignore–several local black girls have been murdered over the past few weeks. After an altercation with a local police officer gets her arrested, Louise is given an ultimatum: She can either help solve the case or let a judge make an example of her.

Louise has no choice but to take the case and soon finds herself toe-to-toe with a murderous mastermind. She’ll have to tackle her own fears and the prejudices of New York City society if she wants to catch a killer and save her own life in the process.

  • The Undoing

    The Undoing by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDEDThe Undoing by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! This is the second book in the Call of Crows, which Sarah absolutely loves. She gave it an A grade, in case you’re wondering:

The Call of Crows series is a unique world and mythology, but it’s the characters in both The Unleashing and The Undoing that make this series terrific.

    A risk worth taking…

No one would ever accuse Jace Berisha of having an easy life—considering her husband…you know…killed her. But that was then! Now she fights for mighty Viking gods with the spectacular and vicious Crows.

But things are turning very bad, very quickly because a vengeful, ancient goddess has come into the world with just one thing on her mind—ending it. And the only way they can hope to stop her is if the Crows join forces with their one-time enemies, the Protectors. A Viking Clan created to do nothing but kill every Crow they see.

Thankfully, Protector Ski Eriksen is a peace loving kind of guy. Because the woman he is desperately trying to get close to is the beautiful and not-very-chatty Jace. Battling Nordic clans? Unkillable goddesses? Jace’s mean-spirited dog? None of these things would ever get in the way of a true Viking!

I was excited that the GA Aiken book being on sale meant the 3rd one was coming out soon, but it won’t be out until October. I enjoyed the Princess Knight but I would need to be in the mood for her style of writing, which is very over the top, so YMMV.

  2. Escapeologist says:

Would the Princess Knight work as a standalone? I get impatient with books that are first in a series, so skipping over the world building info dump works sometimes as long as it doesn’t cut out important character development.

  3. cat_blue says:

Heck yeah, I’d been waiting for a sale for Dead Dead Girls! (a statement that is much creepier out of context…)

  4. hng23 says:

I wish there were more books in Call of Crows.

  5. Courtney M says:

@Escapeologist – I don’t think so. The plot in this series isn’t just there for window dressing around the romance, and Princess Knight continues the action from book one. If you’ve read GA Aiken / Shelly Laurenston before, very much more akin to the later books in the Dragon Kin series (under the G.A. Aiken pen name) than the Pride Series (under Laurenston) (which I would say stand alone, but are better in order, because the characters reoccur).

That said, I didn’t find there to be too much “info dump” in book one, if that’s your concern. It jumps into the action pretty quickly.
