You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This HaBO comes from J. who wants to find this romance:
I’m looking for a romance where the heroine has amnesia.
The heroine wakes up in hospital, not knowing last year of her life (during which she met and married the hero), though remembers everything else. The hero is there in the hospital when she wakes up from a car crash, which is being investigated as suspicious. The heroine’s best friend has had a baby which she also doesn’t remember. The hero is gutted, but so sweet and understanding the whole book.
I remember the heroine going and exploring her home. They couple also slept in separate bedrooms for a while.
Can we HaBO?
Some enchanted season by Marilyn Pappano?
I feel as if I have read a few books with this plotline but unfortunately, nothing comes to mind. Is it a popular trope?
Remember Me by Sophie Kinsella?
I feel like this is about three dozen category romances and six or seven Lifetime teevee movies, too. Gah!
Hm I don’t think it’s Remember Me; if memory serves the heroine was actually cheating on her husband with the hero.
Doubt it’s Pappano’s Some Enchanted Season — although that heroine does have memory gaps resulting from a car crash, she has not forgotten her husband of 15+ years, from whom she was in the process of separating before the accident temporarily incapacitated her.
I don’t think it’s ‘Some Enchanted Season’ because the heroine fled on discovering H’s affair with best friend. And she was in a rehabilitaion centre before they went to their country home.
@Carol S: Agreed. Amnesia is such a central trope in category romances, I think this HABO could apply to any number of them. Although I do notice, at least in the Harlequin Presents universe, it’s way more likely the hero, rather than the heroine, is the one suffering from amnesia.
I thought maybe I had read this, but I can’t find anything in my records. I think I’ve definitely “bought it” though, so it was probably free or at 99cents at some point because it sounds very familiar. (amnesia is one of my catnips!)
Kylie Scott’s REPEAT has an amnesia plot with the ex boyfriend a tattoo artist. I can’t remember of her sister had a baby.
@Vivi12: I don’t think it’s REPEAT. In that one, the h&h weren’t married and had had an acrimonious break-up before she lost her memory. Initially, the hero very reluctantly helps the heroine try to regain her memories. I liked the romance in REPEAT, but I thought the mystery element of how the heroine lost her memory was a bit obvious.
@DDD- much as I usually love Kylie Scott, starting with DIRTY which really has one of the best beginnings ever, I really don’t remember the plot of REPEAT at all, other than the amnesia.
I love how some of you admit to ‘not remembering the plot’ in books about amnesia.
@ EG, too true! I’d like to say it’s a sign of the times, but that would be overly generous to my swiss cheese memory
Kind of sounds like the movie The Vow starting Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, which I believe was inspired by a true story. I never watched the movie, but I would definitely read whatever book this ends up being!
Thanks everyone. Definitely not any mentioned so far. They were happily married before the crash. Genre was just contemporary but it is more recent. I am thinking 2010 ish and up? It is so frustrating because I have been craving it so badly but can’t find it. I have vivid recollections of it, including her in their house staring up at their wedding picture. Her husband was definitely a more powerful person but I cant remeber specifics. Maybe business man, maybe in security. Wealthy for sure. I didn’t say one of the major plot points to because I didn’t want to spoil it, but there is something with her car at the accident that is suspicious. Thanks so much for the suggestions. J
There is a short book “when she remembers” by Hope Jones that sounds like this but it’s 5 years not 1 and I don’t remember if the best friend had a baby.
Book blurb:
“Henley Vano has it all. She was raised by a supportive family, has the best friend a girl could ask for, and a fantastic husband.
Everything in her life was perfect, until she was involved in a hit and run, and woke up thinking it was 2014.
Graham Vano’s life changed the night his wife left to get pie for their anniversary and didn’t come home. His world flipped when she wakes from a coma and doesn’t remember him.
Will Henley regain the last five years of her memory, or will someone with a vendetta take everything away from her before she can?”
Could it be Emma South’s “Remember Our Song”?
“Beatrice Holt seems to have it all. She’s got a passionate and loving marriage to the perfect man, billionaire Jeremy Holt, and all the opportunities and financial security that comes with it. However, life wasn’t always so wonderful. When a tragic accident results in amnesia, she is effectively transported back to a time when all her emotional wounds are still causing her intense pain. She can’t remember how those wounds were healed the first time around, she can’t remember her marriage, she can’t remember the man behind the money at all. All she sees in Jeremy is the very kind of man she swore she would never fall for.”
OMG K!!!! YOU DID IT!! That is the one! I have only reread the 1st chapter and it is totally it. I didn’t remember her losing 5 years, but now that I am rereading it, it is all coming back to me! Lol. And ah- the BFF has a toddler. I have searched and searched and searched and posted about this everywhere. Thank you soooooooo much. And thanks Smartbitches!
Btw- Kay- adding that book to my TBR pile!
So happy this was solved!! Kay’s post from the 3rd sent me looking up Remember our Song, only to find out it was already in my Kindle library (along with millions of other titles I’ve forgotten I own). I don’t, however, own When She Remembers, so I’ve just downloaded a sample of that one and added it to my wish list. I then tried to learn a little about Emma South, the author of Remember Our Song, but there’s a real dearth of info out there and her Facebook page has been quiet for years. Anybody know anything?
