Heads up that I am away this weekend “glamping,” so this weekend’s sales posts may be out of date! Sorry in advance and feel free to post about any current deals in the comments.

Trail of Lightning
RECOMMENDED: Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse is $1.99! I bought the book at full price and immediately preordered the second one upon finishing. You can find my review here:
It’s steeped in mythology, badassery, and lots and lots of violence. If you’re sensitive to graphic, gritty details, this book is not for you.
While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters.
Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last—and best—hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much larger and more terrifying than anything she could imagine.
Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel to the rez to unravel clues from ancient legends, trade favors with tricksters, and battle dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology.
As Maggie discovers the truth behind the disappearances, she will have to confront her past—if she wants to survive.
Welcome to the Sixth World.

A Convenient Fiction
RECOMMENDED: A Convenient Fiction by Mimi Matthews is 99c at Amazon! Claudia reviewed this one and gave it a B:
Readers who appreciate character-driven, slow-burn romance, flawed heroes, and a firm sense of time and place will enjoy this one despite its minor flaws.
She Needed a Husband…
It’s been three years since Laura Hayes’s father died, leaving her and her invalid brother to subsist on the income from the family’s failing perfume business. But time is swiftly running out. What she needs is a husband, and fast. A noble gentleman who can rescue them all from penury. When a mysterious stranger arrives in the village, he seems a perfect candidate. But Alex Archer is no hero. In fact, he just might be the opposite.
He Wanted a Fortune…
Alex has no tolerance for sentiment. He’s returned to England for one reason only: to find a wealthy wife. A country-bred heiress in Surrey seems the perfect target. But somewhere between the village railway station and the manor house his mercenary plan begins to unravel. And it’s all the fault of Laura Hayes—a lady as unsuitable as she is enchanting.
From the beaches of Margate to the lavender fields of Provence, a grudging friendship slowly blossoms into something more. But when scandal threatens, can a man who has spent his entire life playing the villain, finally become a hero? Or will the lure of easy riches once again outweigh the demands of his heart?

Girl Waits with Gun
RECOMMENDED: Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart is $2.99! This is a piece of historical fiction with a group of sisters and Carrie reviewed it! It earned a B+ grade:
Girl Waits With Gun is a historical fiction about the first female deputy sheriff in the USA and her two sisters. It is set just before the outbreak of WWI and just after a major strike by silk-factory workers. It is absolutely delightful, with a heroine who is tall, loud, smart, and deeply protective of her family.
Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

The Lady and the Captain
The Lady and the Captain by Beverly Adam is 99c! This is a historical romance with a fake relationship and forced proximity at sea. Readers are divided on the book’s mystery element. Some thought it enhanced the romance, while others thought it wasn’t very suspenseful. It’s the second book in the Gentleman of Honor series and the first book is also on sale!
Sarah Duncan had the kind of beauty suited for the ballrooms of London, not the back alleys of Ireland. But she was a healer, not a debutante. Her life was devoted to helping others, not dressing up and attending fancy balls.
And then one stormy night she met him. He was a young, English naval officer, who arrived on her doorstep with his deathly ill friend. Her life would be forever changed.
Lieutenant Robert Smythe, acting Captain of The Brunswick, was determined to find the killer who’d poisoned his commander and friend. With Sarah’s knowledge of plants and herbs, he would investigate this devious crime. Posing as his fiancée, she would be off limits to a crew of randy men at sea.
Sarah’s beauty was captivating, but her strength and courage drew him like a talisman. He was determined to catch the killer and keep her safe. Indeed, he would protect her with his very life.

I’m going to share all the love for Maggie Hoske, monster hunter. Rebecca has created an original and engrossing dystopic world. Book Two is all women going out and kicking some ass, and I’m all a flutter for Book Three coming out next month. Do your self a favor and jump on this train.
I love the Mimi Matthews series but in my opinion, A Convenient Fiction is the weakest link in the series. It’s a solid B and worth a read but it’s not as great as the other novels. There is a Balough gentleness to the narrative in these books which I find comforting.
Adding my love for Rebecca Roanhorse! Storm of Locusts (the book after Trail of Lightning) was one of my favorites last year!
Jill Sorenson’s romantic suspense BACKWOODS is 99-cents in the Kindle Store right now. It’s part of her Aftershock series, but you don’t have to have read any of the other books to enjoy BACKWOODS. The hero & heroine are older and they meet because their exes are married to each other, making their teenage children step-siblings. The four of them head off on a camping trip—but there are some really bad guys hiding out in the wilderness. Recommended—if you don’t mind taking your romance with a large portion of nail-biting suspense. Sorenson was one of my favorite writers…how I wish she was still publishing.
Read Trail of Lighting in one sitting two days ago. COULD NOT PUT DOWN. Am thinking I need to spend tomorrow on Storm of Locusts since it’s a holiday and I should treat myself! (& this is only 3rd book I’ve managed to finish this pandemic!)
@DonnaMarie @Penny @Lisa D
I’m intrigued by the Roanhorse books, but “gritty,” “graphic,” and “violent” are some of my least favorite words to read in a book description. Just how graphic is the violence? Is there a play-by-play description of every blow in a fight, with an accompanying description of every injury sustained? Is there torture, especially of the main characters? I think I read a sample of this book a while back, but it didn’t go far enough to really get into the action so I could determine if I would be able to tolerate the level of violence.
All descriptions and opinions are much appreciated!
@discodollydeb
Sorenson got grittier and better in her later novels. Her first two (that I know of) were more romance with suspense, than the other way around, which is fine with me, but just a difference.
In Crash Into Me and Set the Dark on Fire she had secondary romances between teens which I wasn’t completely comfortable with. I’d have preferred the sex scenes to fade-to-black when dealing with underage characters. Also, she takes a backhanded swipe at homeschooling in Crash Into Me, which I really didn’t appreciate, but oh well!
That said, I really enjoyed the two Aftershock books I read, and Edge of Night was great. I didn’t realize she wasn’t still publishing. I’ve been away from romance/romantic suspense for several years before the pandemic got me back into reading more. Thanks for the heads-up on this one because it’s one I haven’t read.
@CarrieG: I believe Sorenson’s last two books were RIDING DIRTY and SHOOTING DIRTY, which were tangentially connected to BADLANDS (which was, in turn, part of the AFTERSHOCKS series). SHOOTING DIRTY, in particular, seemed to be setting up some secondary characters for their own stories and then…nothing. A couple of her Border Patrol books also seemed to be setting up future books, but alas there were no more.
Jill Sorenson, Anne Calhoun, Cara McKenna (Meg Maguire), Ruthie Knox…so many good writers no longer publishing (at least under those names).
Enjoy your vacay, Amanda!
@Wait, what?—I couldn’t get into it due to the on-page violence (there’s a violent on-page death of a child at the beginning which was a hard pass for me.)
I ordered the Roanhouse book based on the reviews and could not finish because of the violence
Jill Sorensen writes as Susan Cliff for Harlequin. She is still writing but not really on a set timeline for when more books come out.
@S.Rose: thank you—I’m glad to know Sorenson is still publishing, although under a different name. I see Cliff released a new book just this past May. Onto the tbr it goes.
