  • The Raven Tower

The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie

The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is being price-matched at select vendors. Leckie’s Ancillary Justice is a favorite with Carrie and SBTB commenters. Readers loved the Hamlet-inspired plot, but warn that the book contains first and second POV, which takes some getting used to.

Gods meddle in the fates of men, men play with the fates of gods, and a pretender must be cast down from the throne in this breathtaking first fantasy novel from Ann Leckie, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards.

For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven. He watches over his territory from atop a tower in the powerful port of Vastai. His will is enacted through the Raven’s Lease, a human ruler chosen by the god himself. His magic is sustained via the blood sacrifice that every Lease must offer. And under the Raven’s watch, the city flourishes.

But the power of the Raven is weakening. A usurper has claimed the throne. The kingdom borders are tested by invaders who long for the prosperity that Vastai boasts. And they have made their own alliances with other gods.

It is into this unrest that the warrior Eolo–aide to Mawat, the true Lease–arrives. And in seeking to help Mawat reclaim his city, Eolo discovers that the Raven’s Tower holds a secret. Its foundations conceal a dark history that has been waiting to reveal itself…and to set in motion a chain of events that could destroy Iraden forever.

  • The Harp of Kings

The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier

RECOMMENDED: The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier is $1.99! I love Marillier’s fantasy books so much; they really do have a soft spot in my heart. This is book one in her most recent series about two bard siblings on a quest. I loved it! And yes, there is a romantic element that will be further explored in the upcoming book two.

A young woman is both a bard–and a warrior–in this thrilling historical fantasy from the author of the Sevenwaters novels.

Eighteen-year-old Liobhan is a powerful singer and an expert whistle player. Her brother has a voice to melt the hardest heart, and a rare talent on the harp. But Liobhan’s burning ambition is to join the elite warrior band on Swan Island. She and her brother train there to compete for places, and find themselves joining a mission while still candidates. Their unusual blend of skills makes them ideal for this particular job, which requires going undercover as traveling minstrels. For Swan Island trains both warriors and spies.

Their mission: to find and retrieve a precious harp, an ancient symbol of kingship, which has gone mysteriously missing. If the instrument is not played at the upcoming coronation, the candidate will not be accepted and the people could revolt. Faced with plotting courtiers and tight-lipped druids, an insightful storyteller, and a boorish Crown Prince, Liobhan soon realizes an Otherworld power may be meddling in the affairs of the kingdom. When ambition clashes with conscience, Liobhan must make a bold decision and is faced with a heartbreaking choice. . .

  • Beard Necessities

    Beard Necessities by Penny Reid

Beard Necessities by Penny Reid is 99c at Amazon! This KDD isn’t being price-matched yet, but it is part of Reid’s very popular Winston Brothers series. Though they all operate well on their own, I think this one in particular does build on previous books in regards to the hero and heroine.

Billy Winston’s family is going to see him happy and in love if it’s the last thing they do.

No one deserves a happily-ever-after quite as much as the second oldest Winston brother and his lady love, Claire McClure (aka Scarlet St. Claire). Cruelty and circumstance tore them apart almost twenty years ago. Secrecy and bitterness kept them separated.

But you know who’s tired of their separation and stubbornness? Everyone. Especially Billy Winston’s family. And now they’re going to do something about it.

Well-meaning interference means the star-crossed lovers can’t stop tripping over each other in the hills of Tuscany, the catacombs of Rome, and the waterways of Venice. Billy and Claire find themselves thrown together and at the mercy of the Winston siblings’ shenanigans.

But will their forced proximity bring them together? Or push them even further apart?

This second-chance romance brings back the entire Winston gang, playing cupid in one last story of love, hi-jinks, and family collusion.

BEARD NECESSITIES is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, and can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s probably best read after books 0.5, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the Winston Brothers series.

  • The Princess Diarist

The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher

The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher is $1.99! I had mixed feelings on this one. I loved listening to it on audio, though I did tear up at times since I listened to it following Carrie’s death. However, the book exclusively deals with Carrie’s experiences on the set of Star Wars and I wanted more of a broader scope.

The Princess Diarist is Carrie Fisher’s intimate, hilarious and revealing recollection of what happened behind the scenes on one of the most famous film sets of all time, the first Star Warsmovie.

When Carrie Fisher recently discovered the journals she kept during the filming of the first Star Wars movie, she was astonished to see what they had preserved—plaintive love poems, unbridled musings with youthful naiveté, and a vulnerability that she barely recognized. Today, her fame as an author, actress, and pop-culture icon is indisputable, but in 1977, Carrie Fisher was just a (sort-of) regular teenager.

With these excerpts from her handwritten notebooks, The Princess Diarist is Fisher’s intimate and revealing recollection of what happened on one of the most famous film sets of all time—and what developed behind the scenes. And today, as she reprises her most iconic role for the latest Star Wars trilogy, Fisher also ponders the joys and insanity of celebrity, and the absurdity of a life spawned by Hollywood royalty, only to be surpassed by her own outer-space royalty. Laugh-out-loud hilarious and endlessly quotable, The Princess Diarist brims with the candor and introspection of a diary while offering shrewd insight into the type of stardom that few will ever experience.

  1. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

I LOVE Penny Reid’s Beard books. I love the complicated characters who are not the ordinary romance heroines and heroes. Sometimes I laughed and sometimes I winced as she got it so right.

  2. Nicole says:

Loved the unique perspective of The Raven Tower! The main character is a god, but the second person part happens in “talking to” the human who helps them, who is trans!

  3. cleo says:

Posted this kind of late yesterday so re-posting.

So Forward by Mina V. Esguerra is $1.99.

I saw on goodreads that it was released recently and the price is supposed to go up. I just grabbed it and it’s cute – m/f romance between two former national athletes – a male, bi figure skater and female hockey player – set in the Philippines.

  4. chacha1 says:

    ooohh Carrie Fisher yay!

  5. Cheryl says:

And…. Penny Reid novel already hiked back to $6.99
I want to finish the series, but not for seven bucks. 🙂

  6. Sydneysider says:

Princess Diaries was a pretty fun, light read.

  7. Leigh Kramer says:

Beard Necessities was a major disappointment. As in, despite loving the first six books in the series, I wish I hadn’t read BN or its horrific prequel Beard With Me. There are big content warnings for both of those books.

  8. Stefanie Magura says:

The books in Elizabeth Boyle’s Brazen Trilogy are individually and together on sale. Brazen Angel is $0.99, while Brazen Heiress and Brazen Temptress are each $2.99. The boxed set of all three books is $1.99. This is all on Amazon.
