Links: Noir Disney, IKEA, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome to Wednesday Links! This is where we share some pretty neat things that we’ve found on the Internet this week. It’s also a nice way to take a break in your day!

I loved taking this IKEA or Death Metal quiz! You have to guess whether a word is a piece of IKEA furniture or the name of a black death metal band. It’s surprisingly difficult. And just a warning, answering questions often prompts music to play.

Love the horror genre and women writers? Check out this list from LitHub on 23 Great Women Horror Writers to Freak You out This October. I’ve read maybe a third of these authors and I’ll definitely check out the rest.

I am obsessed with these images of Disney princesses reimagined as pulp noir covers. Which one is your favorite? Mulan is my favorite Disney movie and it’s probably my favorite cover.

If you love discussing costume choices in scifi and fantasy, you’ll love this list of “thirst-inducing” fashion choices from Syfy’s FanGrrrls:

Claire Fraser’s red gown on Outlander

I really should send the costume designer for Outlander an Edible Arrangement, because truly there is not a more beautifully dressed show on television right now. There have been many moments that took my breath away, and as much as I desperately miss the kilts and knitwear of Season 1, Claire’s French gown takes the cake. While she may look like a proper lady of the court, Claire will get elbow deep in a bloody wound and lecture you about feminism as soon as look at you, making her my dream woman.

I would definitely read a part two of this list.

Looking for some romance-centric podcasts to listen to? We’ve recently updated our list!

Keeping with the theme of handsome actors and adorable animals, here’s Justin Theroux fawning over his dog, Kuma.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Those princesses! And Kuma! What a good start to the day. Thank you.

  2. cleo says:

I got 14 out of 20 right on that quiz – mostly by randomly choosing but I did recognize a few names thanks to my years of teaching and a period of obsessive Ikea catalog perusing.

  3. Claudia says:

So excited to read a little more horror this October!

Also today is the last day of the Queens Feminist Comic Anthology kickstarter. We already hit our goal, which means you’re guaranteed a copy if you donate! I wrote one of the stories!

I love the Mulan cover! Probably my favorite as well. Though, I feel like the artist used Jessica Parker Kennedy’s face for reference for “Shadows of New Orleans” and I love herrrr so much, so I have to adore that cover as well. 😀

  5. Ren Benton says:

I’m not into American Girl dolls, but the job application process in this Buzzfeed quiz was 9,000,000x better than the one I’m going through in real life, and I passed the tests, so that’s my validation for the week.

  6. Frida says:

Loved the quiz! I got 20/20 but I do speak Swedish so…

  7. Deianira says:

15 out of 20 on the quiz – apparently all those trips to Ikea with my nephew & his girlfriend paid off!

On the Disney covers: Love the Beast Hunter & Pocahontas outfits (& would totally read those books), but New Orleans won my heart with the left-handd heroine.

Best thing I’ve seen all week:

November 2 cannot come soon enough.

  9. Line JM says:

I got 20 out of 20 in that quiz, but I suspect being a native speaker of a Scandinavian language gives me a bit of an advantage with the IKEA names.

@DonnaMarie:that version of Bohemian rhapsody was good! Thanks for sharing.

  10. @Line and @Frida, my mother was Danish, which must explain my 20/20. (o;

  11. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Interview with Heather Graham aka Shannon Drake, who writes in a number of genres. (I loved her bodice rippers back in the day.)

THE DAILY SHOW mentioned a political candidate’s authorship of romantic suspense novels in a feature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYeKAMrkneM

  13. Vicki says:

Here is a link to get prints. Might make good gifts for girls who think they are a little too old for princesses. https://society6.com/astoralexander/collection/noir-princesses

  14. Kate says:

Speaking of women in horror and Ikea, I just finished Grady Hendrix’s Paperbacks from Hell and loved it (he also wrote Horrorstör). It’s not just funny and nostalgic, but also thoughtful and well written. He argues that horror is a women’s genre, and that gothic romantic suspense laid the groundwork for the 70’s and 80’s horror boom. Highly recommended if you were a fan of a lot of these books like I was.

  15. Ken says:

Came here to mention Horrorstor, but I’m two days late. Someone should do a Keeper Shelf write-up of it.
