HaBO: Heroine’s Dressmaking is Kind of a Secret

This HaBO comes from Jessica and she’s hoping to find this historical romance:

Looking for a book I read about 10 years ago. It’s a historical romance. The book came out between 2000 and 2010.

    • Hero is an earl or duke or some sort of title.
    • Heroine makes dresses for a lady or friend and no one knows it is her.
    • Hero hires the dressmaker to make dresses for his fiancee or sister and has her go to his house.
    • She has a room on the second floor that the hero sneaks into at night.
    • The heroine makes friends with two ladies helping her with the dresses. One of which is a young lady who finds out she is pregnant later.
    • There is a ball or something like that near the end where she runs out into the garden? I think.
    • He has paid/ordered a certain number of dresses I think.

Sarah thinks it might be part of the Dressmakers series by Loretta Chase, but she hasn’t read them to know.

It sounds like the Dressmakers series – I read them a couple of years ago.

  2. Ren Benton says:

The sisters in the Dressmakers series aspire to be THE source of fine ladies’ fashion and therefore don’t keep their work secret. I don’t think that’s it.

  3. PamG says:

Thought about the Dressmakers series, but I don’t think there’s any stealth stitching in it. So much of it is about the dressmaking biz, and who could forget the “hot” disaster?

  4. Sara says:

Parts of this sound like the duchess deal by Tessa dare, but a) it’s newer than 2001 and b) the h’s dressmaking isn’t a secret. However, she does make dresses for ladies – including 1 ordered by the duke, befriends a young person who ends up pregnant and the duke breaks into her shop.

  5. Lynn says:

Julia London- The Dangers of Deceiving a Viscount
    The Desperate Debutantes series

  6. mel burns says:

Oh darn! Lynn beat me to it! Smartypants. 🙂

  7. JoS says:

He hires her, then seduces and impregnates her. Are we sure he’s a hero?

  8. LauraL says:

@JoS – The hero doesn’t impregnate the seamstress. She is seduced by a rake.

And I cast another vote for The Dangers of Deceiving a Viscount. I loved this series when it came out!

  9. cleo says:

@JoS – I read that as the pregnant woman is a friend of the heroine’s, not the heroine.

  10. JoS says:

    Ah. Makes sense.

  11. Diana says:

    I read this book!!!!

I can’t remember the title, or who wrote it 🙁

  12. McKenzie says:

This also sounds a lot like Eloisa James’ newest Wilde novel. I’ll have to look up these other dressmaker heroines, too!

  13. Kathy says:

I just finished The Dangers of Decieving a Viscount last night… I am positive that’s the book.

  14. denise says:

Wedded in Scandal by Jade Lee, part of the Bridal Favors Series

  15. denise says:

I think the sister’s story is Engaged in Wickedness in the Bridal Favors Series by Jade Lee.

  16. DeanaCal says:

I have read this book sometime in the last year or so, I swear! Maybe Courtney Milan? I remember the heroine with the pregnant friend, altering the friend’s dresses to hide the pregnancy. I feel like she used to be rich or something but then had to get a job in a dress shop to support herself. Maybe The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare?

  17. A says:

Doesn’t Lorraine Heath have a series about a dressmaker?

  18. KariJo says:

I think I’ve read this too. I’ll look thru my books and see if anything rings a bell.
