The Immortals
The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky is $2.99! This is the first book in the Olympus Unbound. Sarah gave the first book a B grade. I highly recommend reading Sarah’s review to get a full sense of whether this book may be for you.
When I started reading it, I had a really difficult time putting it down. The world building made for addictive reading, even when I was reading things I usually don’t read.
MANHATTAN HAS MANY SECRETS.
SOME ARE OLDER THAN THE CITY ITSELF.Manhattan.
The city sleeps. Selene DiSilva walks her dog along the banks of the Hudson. She is alone-just the way she likes it. She doesn’t believe in friends, and she doesn’t speak to her family. Most of them are simply too dangerous.Murders.
In the predawn calm, Selene finds the body of a young woman washed ashore, gruesomely mutilated and wreathed in laurel. Her ancient rage returns. And so does the memory of a promise she made long ago. To protect the innocent-and to punish those who stands in her way.Gods.
With the NYPD out of its depth, Selene vows to hunt the killer on her own. But when classics professor Theo Schultz decodes the ancient myth behind the crime, the solitary Huntress finds herself working with a man who’s her opposite in every way. Together, they face a long-forgotten cult that lies behind a string of murders, and they’ll need help from the one source Selene distrusts most of all: the city’s other Immortals.Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

His Perfect Partner
His Perfect Partner by Priscilla Oliveras is 99c! This contemporary romance features a single dad hero and a dance teacher heroine. Sonali Dev recommended this on a recent podcast episode. She did mention that at times, the book felt more like women’s fiction with a focus on family than a romance. It has a 4.1-star romance on Goodreads.
Three very different Latina sisters. Three dazzling talents with ambition—and passion—to burn. And in this warm-hearted, sexy new series, three chances to figure out if the path to success can also lead to lasting love . . .
Ad executive Tomás Garcia shouldn’t even be thinking about his daughter’s alluring dance teacher, Yazmine Fernandez. Burned by a shattering divorce, he’s laser-focused on his career—and giving his young daughter, Maria, the secure home she deserves. Plus, he’s certain that with her talent, Yaz will be leaving Chicago and heading back to Broadway as soon as she can. But Yaz’s generous spirit and caring concern are sparking a desire Tomás can’t resist—and doesn’t want to let go . . .For Yaz, good-looking workaholics like Tomás simply can’t be part of her life ever again. She owes it to herself to get back her confidence and fulfill the dreams her papá could not. She’s glad to spend time with Maria—and taste the family life she feels she can never have. And she’s sure that she and Tomás can keep their attraction under control because there’s so much at stake. But each unexpected intimacy, each self-revelation, makes the fire between them grow hotter with every step—and every risk to their hearts . . .

Bengal’s Quest
Bengal’s Quest by Lora Leigh is $1.99! This is the thirtieth book (HOLY COW) in the Breeds series. I’m unsure if this could be read as a standalone, as I’ve read conflicting reviews, so chime in with your thoughts. While some readers loved the characters, others felt the plot and details were all over the place.
New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh tells a story of two Breeds who are united by animal desires, only to find it’s vengeance that stirs the mating heat…
He was a shadow, ever shifting and insinuating, able to blend in everywhere and anywhere. The elusive ideal conceived and created by the Genetics Council, he went by just as many names as he had identities—the last one being Gideon.
Now calling himself Graeme, he hides in plain sight, terrifyingly close to his goal. A rogue Bengal Breed, he has loyalties to no one but himself. And he has a need for vengeance that surges hot and swift through his veins.
Graeme plans to exact an extreme and ruthless vendetta against those who wronged him—Breed and human alike. All will suffer his wrath: those who created him, those who pretended to love him, and those who betrayed him.
That includes the one at the center of it all: a seductive, enigmatic woman helpless against the man whose desire is just as desperate as his need to destroy.
And he’s on her scent…

Not My Father’s Son
Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming is $2.99! This is a highly recommended memoir and readers say that if you didn’t want to give Alan Cumming a hug before, you’ll want to give him one after you finish this book. However, others felt the memoir started off strong, but their interest lapsed during the second half. Have you read this one?
In his unique and engaging voice, the acclaimed actor of stage and screen shares the emotional story of his complicated relationship with his father and the deeply buried family secrets that shaped his life and career.
A beloved star of stage, television, and film—“one of the most fun people in show business” (Time magazine)—Alan Cumming is a successful artist whose diversity and fearlessness is unparalleled. His success masks a painful childhood growing up under the heavy rule of an emotionally and physically abusive father—a relationship that tormented him long into adulthood.
When television producers in the UK approached him to appear on a popular celebrity genealogy show in 2010, Alan enthusiastically agreed. He hoped the show would solve a family mystery involving his maternal grandfather, a celebrated WWII hero who disappeared in the Far East. But as the truth of his family ancestors revealed itself, Alan learned far more than he bargained for about himself, his past, and his own father.
With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as a film, television, and theater star. At times suspenseful, deeply moving, and wickedly funny, Not My Father’s Son will make readers laugh even as it breaks their hearts.

I listened to Not My Father’s Son on a trip to Florida-I thought it was very good. He is the narrator, and I love his accent-so I’m sure that helped.
I started The Immortals and then stopped it almost immediately because I just couldn’t get past the OBVIOUS VILLAIN OF OBVIOUSNESS and was not in the mood to put up with 400+ pages of plot contortion to justify why supposedly smart characters couldn’t figure these things out faster. But I was probably also irrationally annoyed because I think this was the third or so book in a row that this had happened to me with, so my tolerance for this nonsense (never high to begin with) was already dangerously low.
Not My Father’s Son is one of the best books I have ever read.
I think that The Immortals is simultaneously terrible and fabulous, and I’ll be reading the entire series. I’m not totally sure why as I don’t much like any of the characters. Así es la vida, I guess.
Who wouldn’t want to hug Alan Cummings?
Also, Lora Leigh, the only writer who insults her readers’ intelligence more than JR Ward? No. Just no.
Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson is $1.99 at Amazon.
@Caitlin The Immortals is definitely terrible and fabulous, and the sequel is even more so. The romance is pretty lightweight, though, so if you want more than that I’d look elsewhere. Still, I kind of love how deadly serious all the characters are in a plot that plays like a mythology-inspired B-movie (which I would probably still watch).
I love Alan Cumming desperately (I saw him perform his I BOUGHT A BLUE CAR TODAY one-man show in SF a few years ago, and it was EVERYTHING), but I admit I’ve tried NOT MY FATHER’S SON multiple times without finishing. (It was the combo of the truly heartrending situation and the somewhat repetitive rendering of it.) Instead, I throw all my enthusiasm behind his recent YOU GOTTA GET BIGGER DREAMS photo monograph, which feels like your adorable, multitalented bohemian buddy dishing to you (with photographic proof). The audio version is 1000% (not a typo) worth it (in spite of the occasional distracting directions to “see your bonus PDF”), especially when he discusses things like states of undress during New York summers and his award from Fleshbot (which appears to be an nJoy Eleven steel dildo). Hey, I have both!
Uh, formats of the book, that is…not the nJoy Eleven. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!)
Er, unfortunate text wrap caused me to read the sentence about His Perfect Partner as “Ad executive Tomas should not even be thinking about his daughter’s alluring dance.”
Ew. No.
I get that it’s the dance TEACHER…it wasn’t a full stop there, but still. Now the image is in my head of a father *cough*Trump*cough* ogling his daughter at dance class and I kinda threw up in my mouth.
@GraceElizabeth I feel like this perfectly describes why I keep reading the series. And of course I’d probably also watch a B-rate mythology movie, mocking and lovehating it all the way.
@GraceElizabeth and @Caitlin- this sums up the books very well. It is so serious and dry but kind of addictive.I also don’t really like the characters- their angst level is not really my thing. I do like the take on mythology, though.
As to an earlier commentator- I really didn’t figure out the villain.
