Pretty things to look at

I’ve never been much of a collector doll person, but I have to say: the waxed plastic mantitty version of Johnny Depp from Pirates of the Caribbean?

Verrry interesting. Not necessarily a perfect match for Depp, but the sculpted chest is just fascinating me.

Will Turner doesn’t look so much like Orlando Bloom. More like Edward Norton wearing a scarf knitted by my mother in law.

But the very tan pirate Elizabeth Swann? That’s awesome. I dig that one out of the entire collection. Too bad I’m not a doll person. If I were to own one, it’d become a cat toy in 2.3 seconds. Fukui-san particularly would savor Elizabeth’s hair over and over again.

  1. Jack looks like they painted a beard on Barbie. I love the Elizabeth one, but she looks nothing like Keira.

My cat isn’t a Barbie hair fan but prefers anything with tulle. We have much tulle in our house with cat mouth sized holes in it.

  2. Candy says:

Jack Sparrow looks more like Elizabeth than the Elizabeth doll. I suppose it answers the question “What would Keira Knightley look like if she decided to make a career out of being a drag king?”

  3. Genevieve P. says:

Not that I collect 16 inch fashion and 18 inch play dolls or anything … *coughcough*okmaybeIdo*cough* but I agree, Tonner Company has a hard time making their man dolls look well, like men.  The cheek bones are always too high, the eyes have too much makeup and the jaw lines and eyebrows always look funky.  To be fair to Tonner, though, Depp and Bloom are kind of feminine looking to begin with.

I’m still waiting for Sam and Dean Winchester dolls.  Yummy.

I think we should applaud the fact that they’re making dolls who are PIRATES!  And a GIRL pirate!  Why can’t Harlequin understand the appeal of women who are swashbuckling?  I for one could care less who they look like – I think we should all have a pirate doll on our dashboard!

  5. Lauren says:

But why not one of Norrington?!!! I would pay top money for one. But that’s because I’d take Norry over Jack and Will anyway.

    ::still bitter about movie 3::

  6. MaryKate says:

The Jack Sparrow one looks like Billy D. Williams.

  7. Kristie(J) says:

LOL – I’m not a doll collector either and while I don’t think they look like her – the Elizabeth Swan Court Gown and Abandoned Bride dolls are very pretty.

  8. Carrie Lofty says:

The Elizabeth dolls look like a skinny Trisha Yearwood.

  9. Kacey says:

They did a much better job on Spiderman than on Will. I actually think the doll looks more masculine than Peter Parker ever seemed to be. Also Asriel in Golden Compass looks a lot like a man – rather than a woman in drag (well at least from the side).

  10. Aimee says:

the will turner reminds me of a young liberace, with a goatee of course.

  11. Tina says:

I agree that they don’t really look like any of the characters, though I do like the Elizabeth dolls.  Looking through the site, I was impressed with how accurate the Harry Potter collection was of the characters—and then I saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione.  Especially Harry, with that hairstyle and glasses.  He reminds me of someone and I can’t think of who, but Rhoda’s mother springs to mind.  It’s definately some older woman from a late-60s, early-70s tv show.  Someone help me out here.

The “American Models” collection is just lovely, though.  I really liked the Cajun Romance and the Chantilly ones, though they’re all really pretty.

  12. Alison says:

Will Turner reminds me of “Felicity.”  I wonder if he’s filled with angst as well?

  13. Looks like Captain Jack’s been hitting the Herbal Essences Body Envy pretty hard to get those glorious shiny locks.

  14. Elizabeth says:

I’m a sucker for the Georgian period, so I love Miss Swann’s frocks, but… why did they give her a severe widow’s peak?  Keira Knightley doesn’t have one; she looks more like the Lyra doll.  Still, at least they didn’t give her huge breasts; you don’t need to be busty to be pretty, as I think KK shows.

  15. talpianna says:

How can you forget Barbie and Ken as the protagonists of Jude Devereaux’s THE RAIDER?  No matter how hard you try….

Where is Barbosa!!! I’m shocked, shocked I tell ye!

  17. MT says:

Interesting side note: a while ago, I saw someone on TV (probably on a talk show) comparing the Han Solo toys manufactured in the 70s with the new ones made after the rerelease of the original trilogy in the 90s.

70s Solo: Handsome dude with blaster

90s Solo: Massive mantitty crowning a triangular torso, complete with bulging thigh muscles

Somewhere along the way, even our action figures went from being shaped like normal people to steroid-enhanced genetic anomalies.

If Han Solo tried to fly the Millenium Falcon with ‘roid rage, Chewbacca would smack a bitch.  That’s all I’m saying.

  18. I’m still lusting after Pirate Barbie:

I need to remind the offspring that Mother’s Day will soon be nigh.

  19. oakling says:

I would like to see a photoessay of your cat battling Elizabeth Swann!

  20. Denni says:

Huh, Will looks Spanish.  Love her costumes, but less of a Kiera Knightly fan every time I see her.

  21. MAL says:

Is Captain Jack sitting on… a black cowboy hat?!?!

  22. Kalen Hughes says:

My best friend (who works for a toy company) was just given the Jack Sparrow doll by Mr. Tonner while she was working the NY Toy Fair (she had a gushy moment in his booth and he was so impressed he presented Jack to her at the end of the week, LOL!).

Now Jack and Spike (who already resided on her desk) can do nasty, nasty things . . . and when her Apollo doll from the new Battlestar series shows up all bets are off. That’s going to be one hot ménage. LOL!

  23. Laurel says:

But imagine the joy of saying “I’ll be spending all afternoon in my room playing with Captain Jack. Hold my calls.”
