RECOMMENDED: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is $1.99! No one here ever talks about Outlander, it certainly doesn’t have one of the most popular heroes or couples in fiction, and it’s not a perennial bestseller. : )

We open on a scene from The Avengers – not those Avengers, the British show from the 1960s (HEY DIANA RIGG YOU ARE AMAZING). It’s 1968, and the camera pans back to reveal a pack of children crowded around the TV, and behind them a man is also watching, well “watching” but really staring into the middle distance that comes from exhaustion and/or grief. If you remove the floppy 1960s hair, you may recognize him … Continue reading Outlander 2.13: “Dragonfly in Amber” →
One thing you notice as you read the Outlander series is all the mentions of food. It’s not quite as prolific as all the food in A Song of Ice and Fire, but there’s a lot of book and a lot of food. As we’ve seen, a lot of people like food (I am one) and like playing with food, and Outlander fandom being what it is, we should not be surprised that there is … Continue reading Outlander Kitchen: The Official Outlander Companion Cookbook by Theresa Carle-Sanders →
Over the title card, a man removes the lynchpin to a carriage wheel. Spoilers, RDM. At Versailles, Jamie is playing chess with Duverney, with Claire, hand protectively on belly, watching. (Sidenote: I can think of nothing more dull than watching your partner playing chess, especially with you standing and wearing heels. While pregnant. At least get her a chair.) D asks if they’ve thought of a name for “le petit bambin” and Claire offers that … Continue reading Outlander 2.04: “La Dame Blanche” →
I thought this was going to be a light month, but nope. New Nora Roberts! The start to a new series by Theresa Romain! Hide those wallets and tell us what’s on your to-buy list this month!
RECOMMENDED: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon is $3.99 at most vendors! No one here ever talks about Outlander, it certainly doesn’t have one of the most popular heroes or couples in fiction, and it’s not a perennial bestseller. : )

RECOMMENDED: The Good Girl by Mary Kubica is $2.99 digitally. Elyse discussed this book in her recent post Good Girl, Gone Girl and Women in Psychological Thrillers. She wrote, “Parts of the novel takes place during the period of time of Mia’s disappearance and others take place after. The hook is that after her traumatic rescue, Mia cannot remember the months she spent with her abductor. I won’t ruin it for this audience, but the book is not the typical female-in-jeopardy situation.” So if you’re looking for thrillers, this might really work for you.

TRIGGER WARNINGS UP THE WAZOO, PEOPLE. Torture, sexual assault. Even beyond those things, it’s a dark, dark episode with a lot of terrible things happening. I promise you I will not use any explicit gifs for this episode or next episode. Previously: Jamie is in Wentworth Prison. Claire has convinced the boys (Thing One, Thing Two, Willie, and Murtagh) to help bust him out. The title card is a pan over various torture devices, ending … Continue reading Outlander Episode 15: Wentworth Prison →
The title card is a puppet show of a curly haired woman in white, talking with fairies near some standing stones, and then she disappears in a puff of smoke. At Lallybroch, Jenny is issuing orders to the staff- milk the goats, get honey. Claire flies around doing dithering panic packing. Ian demands to know what the hell she plans to do, and he’s gonna help! “You’re missing your leg!” “I’ll fashion another one!” Ian … Continue reading Outlander Episode 14: The Search →
Previously: they remind us who The Watch is and who Horrocks is. Jamie and Claire are at Lallybroch. Title card: a silver pocket watch, lying abandoned in leaves. I could go on for pages about symbolism and the watchmaker hypothesis and tie it into the episode, I GUESS but this recap is going to be long enough. Jamie is held at pistol point, muttering that he hopes the bad guy holding him there kept his … Continue reading Outlander Episode 13: The Watch →
