Books by Mimi Matthews, Kit Rocha, & More

These are some really good deals, but I do worry they are expiring sales from yesterday. Apologies if that’s the case.

  • A Marvellous Light

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

RECOMMENDED: A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske is $2.99! Carrie wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it a B:

Readers who love thoughtful, specific worldbuilding and very thoughtful characters who slowly fall for one another will likely enjoy this book, though be warned that the tension and pace felt uneven and may require some reader perseverance.

Robin Blyth has more than enough bother in his life. He’s struggling to be a good older brother, a responsible employer, and the harried baronet of a seat gutted by his late parents’ excesses. When an administrative mistake sees him named the civil service liaison to a hidden magical society, he discovers what’s been operating beneath the unextraordinary reality he’s always known.

Now Robin must contend with the beauty and danger of magic, an excruciating deadly curse, and the alarming visions of the future that come with it—not to mention Edwin Courcey, his cold and prickly counterpart in the magical bureaucracy, who clearly wishes Robin were anyone and anywhere else.

Robin’s predecessor has disappeared, and the mystery of what happened to him reveals unsettling truths about the very oldest stories they’ve been told about the land they live on and what binds it. Thrown together and facing unexpected dangers, Robin and Edwin discover a plot that threatens every magician in the British Isles—and a secret that more than one person has already died to keep.

  • The Heart Principle

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang

RECOMMENDED: The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang is $2.99! This is the third book in The Kiss Quotient trilogy, which I loved. I liked this one a lot. Yes, I consider it to be a romance. However, I’m not sure if or when I’ll do a re-read as it deals heavily with caring for a parent, especially one with which the heroine has really complicated dynamics. I had to do that over the pandemic and it was a very personal and emotional read for me.

A woman struggling with burnout learns to embrace the unexpected—and the man she enlists to help her—in this heartfelt new romance by USA Today bestselling author Helen Hoang.

When violinist Anna Sun accidentally achieves career success with a viral YouTube video, she finds herself incapacitated and burned out from her attempts to replicate that moment. And when her longtime boyfriend announces he wants an open relationship before making a final commitment, a hurt and angry Anna decides that if he wants an open relationship, then she does, too. Translation: She’s going to embark on a string of one-night stands. The more unacceptable the men, the better.

That’s where tattooed, motorcycle-riding Quan Diep comes in. Their first attempt at a one-night stand fails, as does their second, and their third, because being with Quan is more than sex—he accepts Anna on an unconditional level that she has just started to understand herself. However, when tragedy strikes Anna’s family she takes on a role that she is ill-suited for, until the burden of expectations threatens to destroy her. Anna and Quan have to fight for their chance at love, but to do that, they also have to fight for themselves.

  • Consort of Fire

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha is $1.99! This is book one in Bound to Fire and Steel fantasy romance series. Book two came out last month. Did any of you pick this one up? If so, what did you think?

From cult-favorite writing duo Kit Rocha comes a fiery novel set in a lush fantasy world brimming with ancient magic, dangerous secrets, and erotic connections.

For three thousand years, an ancient dragon god has protected the borders of the Sheltered Lands. In return, he makes only one demand: every one hundred years, the mortal ruler must send their heir to serve as his consort…for as long as they can survive.

Sachielle of House Roquebarre is the thirty-first consort to be sacrificed to the monster who guards the mountain passes. She is young, beautiful—and she has three secrets.

First: she’s a disposable orphan trained in seduction.

Second: her handmaid, Zanya, is an assassin and the only person she has ever loved.

Third—and most dangerous: she’s cursed. Sachi and Zanya have five weeks to murder the Dragon in his bed. If they fail, the mortal king’s curse will steal not just Sachi’s life, but her very soul.

The Dragon has only one secret: he is nothing like what they have been told. And he will do whatever it takes to possess them both.

  • The Belle of Belgrave Square

The Belle of Belgrave Square by Mimi Matthews

The Belle of Belgrave Square by Mimi Matthews is $1.99! Lara reviewed this and gave it a B-:

If you’re looking for a Victorian historical with a heroine who is brave despite herself, in a book that won’t rip your heart out or drag you through rivers of angst and misery, then I think you’ll enjoy this romance.

A London heiress rides out to the wilds of the English countryside to honor a marriage of convenience with a mysterious and reclusive stranger.

Tall, dark, and dour, the notorious Captain Jasper Blunt was once hailed a military hero, but tales abound of his bastard children and his haunted estate in Yorkshire. What he requires now is a rich wife to ornament his isolated ruin, and he has his sights set on the enchanting Julia Wychwood.

For Julia, an incurable romantic cursed with a crippling social anxiety, navigating a London ballroom is absolute torture. The only time Julia feels any degree of confidence is when she’s on her horse. Unfortunately, a young lady can’t spend the whole of her life in the saddle, so Julia makes an impetuous decision to take her future by the reins—she proposes to Captain Blunt.

In exchange for her dowry and her hand, Jasper must promise to grant her freedom to do as she pleases. To ride—and to read—as much as she likes without masculine interference. He readily agrees to her conditions, with one provision of his own: Julia is forbidden from going into the tower rooms of his estate and snooping around his affairs. But the more she learns of the beastly former hero, the more intrigued she becomes…

  1. Vicki says:

I wanted to mention that Stone Cold Kiwi by Rosalind James is currently 2.99 on kindle. This is one of my favorite books. Their meet-cute is he, as an ER doc, is delivering her baby on the grass outside the hospital because she didn’t quite make it to the hospital. He has a playboy reputation; she has a cheating husband she is leaving. Her kids are not plot moppets.

  2. Darlynne says:

@Vicki, I love this book so much; bought the series and audio set, too. I don’t know how James does it, but am so glad to have seen a recommendation here (maybe it was you?!) that had me washing up on NZ shores in my head.

  3. Karin says:

I’m not a big fan of Gothics(I never read any of those books with the woman on the cover running away from the mansion during a storm), but The Belle of Belgrave Square has a lot of Gothic elements, especially the Bluebeard trope, and I absolutely adored it.

  4. Rhiannon K says:

Belle of Belgrave Sq was a buddy read and I loved it 🙂 if I remember the pining was top notch.

  7. cleo says:

I highly recommend the Kit Rocha! It’s the first in the series and while it ends with a good HFN, there’s quite a bit of unfinished business that is dealt with in book 2 (which I also adored).

Here’s my 4.5 star GR review:

Queer, poly m/f/f romance / fantasy with dragons, secrets and seduction. I enjoyed this emotionally complex story of 3 damaged people struggling to meet their (conflicting) responsibilities while also falling for each other.

This was my first Kit Rocha and I enjoyed it. I thought the world building was good. The pacing was a little off – it dragged a bit at the beginning for me. But I’m all in now. Excellent start to a new series.

  8. Karin says:

Since @flchen1 mentioned it, I wanted to add that I recommend THE LADY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD by Grace Calloway, which is free! It’s a sexy marriage-in-trouble romance, the heroine is a former spy but her husband doesn’t know it. It’s somewhat separate from the rest of the series, so no problem reading as a standalone.

  9. Kareni says:

I see that @flchen1 beat me to it!

One of my favorite books is currently on sale for $1.99 for US Kindle readers ~

    Linesman by S.K. Dunstall

  10. Charlotte says:

So, The Belle of Belgrave Square is fine. I liked it fine!

However, it is heavily inspired (& the author says so) by The Blue Castle by Lucy Maud Montgomery, which is always free because it’s in the public domain (available on Project Gutenberg).
If you haven’t read that, I highly recommend you do! It’s one of Montgomery’s handful of adult books (or explicitly for adults) and imo her best overall (I have read nearly all of her books).
It’s one of the first romances I ever read, and it’s an all-time favourite. I’ve reread it many times.
