    Released: August 20, 2024 by Tor.com
    Genre: , ,

We choose our own gods here.

Karys Eska is a deathspeaker, locked into an irrevocable compact with Sabaster, a terrifying eldritch entity—three-faced, hundred-winged, unforgiving—who has granted her the ability to communicate with the newly departed. She pays the rent by using her abilities to investigate suspicious deaths around the troubled city she calls home. When a job goes sideways and connects her to a dying stranger with dangerous secrets, her entire world is upended.

Ferain is willing to pay a ludicrous sum of money for her help. To save him, Karys inadvertently binds him to her shadow, an act that may doom them both. If they want to survive, they will need to learn to trust one another. Together, they journey to the heart of a faded empire, all the while haunted by arcane horrors and the unquiet ghosts of their pasts.

And all too soon, Karys knows her debts will come due.

Amanda: I’ve heard eldritch gods are involved!

  • Good Duke Gone Wild

Good Duke Gone Wild by Bethany Bennett

    Author: Bethany Bennett
Released: August 20, 2024 by Forever
    Genre: ,
    Series: Bluestocking Booksellers #1

In this dazzling historical romance, a Duke with a complicated romantic history and a bookseller with a family business to protect find themselves drawn to each other—even if their hidden secrets should keep them apart. Perfect for fans of USA Today bestsellers Lenora Bell and Sophie Jordan!

Dorian Whitaker, Duke of Holland, needs an heir after his so-called “fairytale marriage” ended in disaster. When the intriguing bookseller he’s hired to liquidate his late wife’s library finds love letters revealing an affair, he is drawn into a mystery alongside a lady whose sharp intellect dazzles him and dares him to imagine a new adventure outside the gilded cage of the Ton.

If anyone found out Caroline Danvers writes erotic novels under a pen name, she’d face utter ruin. Except her latest hero inspiration is none other than the Duke of Holland—a man with the power to destroy her family’s bookshop. And yet the real man proves to be so much more than the character she created. Even as they expose the dark secrets of his past, she knows he can never discover her own. But the more time they spend together, the more tempting it is to rewrite their ending and turn fantasy into reality.

Amanda: Definitely recommend this one if you like bookish characters who love reading and writing romance.

  • Love and Other Conspiracies

Love and Other Conspiracies by Mallory Marlowe

    Author: Mallory Marlowe
Released: August 20, 2024 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,

The hardest thing for a paranormal conspiracy theorist and a web series producer to believe in is finding love in this swoony debut romantic comedy.

Hallie Barrett’s life has imploded after she’s dumped by her hotshot ex, who also happens to be her coworker and the star of the online series she was producing. Without a new show to present for the company competition, she’ll be out of a job. But inspiration can come from the strangest places . . . like the most handsome guy she’s ever seen passionately discussing Bigfoot on a late-night docuseries.

Hayden Hargrove made a name for himself as a cryptid expert on his hit podcast, and is intrigued by the plucky, blue-haired producer who offers him the opportunity to lead his own web show. When the production team sees that Hayden’s solo on-screen presence is bad enough to make a ghost blanch, Hallie jumps on camera too, hitting him (and his cryptids) with a healthy dose of skepticism—and enough chemistry to electrify their show to the top of the competition.

As Hayden and Hallie investigate the unknown, they unearth feelings for each other that shake their beliefs to the core. In their search for Mothman, aliens, and the truth, the most elusive discovery might just be learning to love again.

Amanda: I’m a sucker for a cryptid storyline.

  • Prince of the Palisades

Prince of the Palisades by Julian Winters

    Author: Julian Winters
Released: August 20, 2024 by Viking Books for Young Readers
    Genre: , , ,

Young Royals meets Red, White, and Royal Blue in this heart-pumping romance by award-winning author Julian Winters!

When roguish Prince Jadon of Îles de la Rêverie is left in America to clean up his image after a horribly public break-up gone viral, romance is not on the table. Carefully planned photo ops with puppies? Yes. Scheduled appearances with the Santa Monica elite Absolutely. Rendezvous with a pink-haired, film-obsessed hottie from the private school where he’s currently enrolled? Uhhhh . . .

Together with his entourage—a bitingly witty royal guard, Rêverie’s future queen (and Jadon’s brilliant older sister), and a quirky royal liaison—Jadon’s on a mission to turn things around and show his parents, and his country, that he’s more than just a royal screw-up. If he doesn’t prove that he’s the prince Rêverie deserves? Well, he may not be allowed home . . .

But falling for a not-so-royal American boy has Jadon redefining what it means to be a leader. If he can be someone’s Prince Charming just by being himself, maybe that’s all it takes to win over a nation. Or at least a prince can dream . . .

Shana: I saw the author talking about wanting to to see Black boys like himself in the royal romances he loved and it made me want to read this immediately.

  • Rise and Divine

Rise and Divine by Lana Harper

    Author: Lana Harper
Released: August 20, 2024 by Berkley
    Genre: , , ,
Series: The Witches of Thistle Grove #5

To save both her town and the woman who loves her against all odds, a witch haunted by loss must reckon with her turbulent past, in the next magical romance in the Witches of Thistle Grove series by New York Times bestselling author Lana Harper.

Even in a family of chaotic necromancers, Daria “Dasha” Avramov has always been an outlier. An event planner at the Arcane Emporium occult megastore, Dasha is also a devil a rare necromantic witch with an affinity for banishing demons and traversing the veil, the boundary between this realm and the next.

Still grieving the loss of both beloved parents years ago, and plagued by a dangerous obsession with the world beyond the veil, Dasha is fiery yet guarded, an expert at dodging commitment. Her worst regret is a devastating breakup with the wise, empathetic, and sensual Ivy Thorn, her event-planning counterpart at Honeycake Orchards, and probably the love of Dasha’s life. Dasha has managed to break Ivy’s heart not once, but twice, so things are more than a little tense between them.

When they’re thrown together to plan the Cavalcade—a month-long festival celebrating Thistle Grove’s ceremonial founding with dazzling spectacles held by the town’s witch families—Dasha hopes that the third time might be the charm, while Ivy refuses to let herself be hurt again. As they confront the pain and passion lingering between them, Dasha and Ivy must also stand against an otherworldly threat unlike anything Thistle Grove has faced before.

Tara: This blurb had me at “Arcane Emporium occult megastore” and “devil eater”. The third-chance romance is like the icing on top.

  • Rules for Ghosting

Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore

    Author: Shelly Jay Shore
Released: August 20, 2024 by Dell
    Genre: , ,

    Rule #1: They can’t speak.
    Rule #2: They can’t move.
Rule #3: They can’t hurt you.

Ezra Friedman sees ghosts, which made growing up in a funeral home complicated. To save his family’s failing funeral home—and his own chance at a queer love story—a reluctant clairvoyant must embrace the gift he long ignored in this poignant and tender debut.

It might have been easier if his grandfather’s ghost didn’t give him scathing looks of disapproval as he went through a second, HRT-induced puberty, or if he didn’t have the pressure of all those relatives—living and dead—judging every choice he makes. It’s no wonder that Ezra runs as far away from the family business as humanly possible.

But when the floor of his dream job drops out from under him and his mother uses the family Passover seder to tell everyone she’s running off with the rabbi’s wife, Ezra finds himself back in the thick of it. With his parents’ marriage imploding and the Friedman Family Memorial Chapel on the brink of financial ruin, Ezra agrees to step into his mother’s shoes and help out . . . which means long days surrounded by ghosts that no one else can see.

And then there’s his unfortunate crush on Jonathan, the handsome funeral home volunteer . . . who just happens to live downstairs from Ezra’s new apartment . . . and the appearance of the ghost of Jonathan’s gone-too-soon husband, Ben, who is breaking every spectral rule that Ezra knows.

Because Ben can speak. He can move. And as Ezra tries to keep his family together and his heart from getting broken, he realizes that there’s more than one way to be haunted—and more than one way to become a ghost.

Dahlia: This is sort of on the contemporary/romance border, a really lovely and haunting romance between a gay widower and a bi trans guy who has to return to working on the dead even though he suffers from the ability to see ghosts. If you’re an oldest child, and especially an Eldest Daughter(tm), this will probably heavily resonate with you!

  • The Third Wife of Faraday House

The Third Wife of Faraday House by B.R. Myers

    Author: B.R. Myers
Released: August 20, 2024 by William Morrow Paperbacks
    Genre: , , ,

The Edgar Award–winning author of A Dreadful Splendor blends mystery and spooky thrills with friendship and romance in this delicious love letter to Gothic fiction, featuring two brides who must band together to unravel the ghostly secrets at the heart of a crumbling island manor.

    ‘Til death do us part…

November 1816: Restless but naïve Emeline Fitzpatrick is desperate to escape her stifling life in foggy Halifax. Her guardian is lining up repugnant suitors, but Emeline has her eyes set on a handsome lieutenant in the British navy. She just needs to persuade him to propose, or her one chance at happiness will be gone forever.

But when Emeline’s hopes end in scandal, she finds herself with only one suitor left: the wealthy and enigmatic Captain Graves. Having already lost two wives to tragic circumstances, the unfortunate widower is seeking a new companion in his cloistered seaside manor, Faraday House. Or at least that is what Emeline had been told, because when she arrives, she is horrified to discover that the second Mrs. Graves, Georgina, has not yet died.

Emeline is only certain of two things: something ghastly is afoot at Faraday House, and no one is going to save her. She will have to rely on her own courage, her burgeoning bond with the ill but strong-willed Georgina, and the aid of a handsome reverend with a mysterious past to unravel the secrets at the heart of the manor and forge her own destiny.

Elyse: A young woman arrives at a crumbling, spooky estate to marry the owner–only his current wife isn’t dead yet.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Two books on my tbr this week:

August 20: FORBIDDEN ROYAL VOWS by Caitlin Crews. Another heaping helping of operatic level angst from one of the queens of angsty HPs.

August 24: HE LOVES ME NOT by CM Nascosta. Monster romance between rival florists—with MCs who first appeared in Nascosta’s most recent Girls Weekend book (INVITATIONS).

  2. Michael I says:

    @DiscoDollyDeb

“He Loves Me Not” seems to have disappeared from Nascosta’s Amazon page. It may have been postponed.

  3. Bailsandherbooks says:

Rules For Ghosting was my favorite book I’ve read so far this year! It also left the door open for a sequel starring the main character’s brother, which I’m super jazzed about.

  4. JenC says:

I’m excited about LOVE REQUIRES CHOCOLATE by Ravynn Stringfield. It’s a debut YA about a theater student studying abroad in Paris and her footballer French tutor. The cover and interior design look gorgeous!

Must put LOVE AND OTHER CONSPIRACIES into my eyeballs right away! Thank you!

  5. JenC says:

There’s a new Carla Kelly regency out today! A NAVAL SURGEON TO FIGHT FOR!

  6. Lisa F says:

    All on my TBR!

  7. HeatherS says:

I snapped up “Good Duke Gone Wild” yesterday. That cover is just too pretty. Also, it has a solid first line: “The next villain she wrote would be a vicar.”
