  • Never Cross a Highlander

Never Cross a Highlander by Lisa Rayne

RECOMMENDED: Never Cross a Highlander by Lisa Rayne is 99c! Shana reviewed this one and gave this a B:

Ultimately, Never Cross a Highlander gave me what I want from a summertime historical romance read: characters I was curious about, enough adventure to keep me guessing but not so much that I started stressing, solid sexual tension, and some new-to-me history facts without having to break open a nonfiction book.

Ailsa Connery has waited three long years to finally escape her enslavement at Stirling Castle and reunite with her clan. But her carefully laid plans are completely destroyed by the arrival of the infamous Highland warrior known as Dubh Mahoun, the Black Devil…who has plans of his own.

Kallum MacNeill’s fearsome reputation has long allowed him to keep hidden his secret double life of freeing enslaved captives across the land. It’s only when he kidnaps a servant lass—quite by accident—that he finds himself facing a wee predicament. He must accompany the lass home or risk her exposing his true identity. It’d be easy enough…if the feisty hellion didn’t fight him at every turn.

As they make their way to the Highlands, the perils the two must face are surpassed only by their constant sparring. Soon, their heated sniping sparks heat of a totally different kind. The kind that ignites a hunger that could consume them both. Yet the difficult journey is no match for the dangerous secrets they’re about to uncover.

  • Silver Under Nightfall

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco

Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco is $1.99! This is a horror mystery, I’d say, with a queer, poly romantic subplot. I know that descriptor will perk someone’s ears right up!

Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters—this gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannon’s The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.

Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.

When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice.

    It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret.

But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

  • How to Catch a Duke

How to Catch a Duke by Grace Burrowes

How to Catch a Duke by Grace Burrowes is $2.99! This is book six in the Rogues to Riches series and it features a fake engagement. I feel like this series has been on a sale quite a bit recently, so you all might be close to completing the current set.

A fake engagement and plenty of charm keep the pages turning in this delightful Regency romance.

“I have come to ask you to kill me, my lord.”

Miss Abigail Abbott desperately needs to disappear, and the only person she trusts to help her do that is Lord Stephen Wentworth, heir to the Duke of Walden. Stephen is brilliant, charming, and—when he needs to be—absolutely ruthless. So ruthless, that, he proposes marriage instead of a pretense of murder, to keep Abigail safe.

Stephen knows that Abigail has the dignity and determination of a duchess and the courage of a lioness. When she accepts his courtship of convenience, he also discovers she kisses like his most intimate wish come true. For Abigail, their arrangement is a sham to escape her dangerous enemies. For Stephen, it’s his last, best hope to share a lifetime with the lady of his dreams—if he can convince her his love is real.

  • We’re Going to Need More Wine

We’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union

RECOMMENDEDWe’re Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union is $2.99 and is a KDD! Sarah read this one and gave it an A-:

Her perspective as a parent, an actress, an activist and artist, and as a person was a treat and a privilege to read. Half my friends are probably tired of hearing about this book in every text and message, but it’s worth passing along. This was a thoughtful and honest memoir, and I very much recommend it – especially for the Prince stories.

In the spirit of Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman.

One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union—a forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: “It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real.”

In this moving collection of thought provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards, and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic, and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

Old Skool Romance was full of “feisty hellions.” They were usually Too Stupid To Live and tended to toss their lustrous locks, stomp their small feet, and jut their dainty chins.

I don’t miss them, and I nope out whenever I see “feisty” or “hellion.”

I read these some time ago and enjoyed them. I actually read further in the series, too.

I read the listing for How to Catch a Duke and sighed my memory of how much I enjoyed the story.

  6. magpie says:

I read the Grace Burrows series a couple of years ago and recall liking it enough to snarf down the entire series one right after another. I read the series out of order and while I was fine with that (I read spoilers for everything) others might want to keep to the reading order because I think this book spoils some big reveals from the previous books, and the heroine is a secondary character in one of the earlier books. This was my favorite book from the series. The set up for this series is highly implausible but that probably added to my enjoyment. The duke and his family were not born into the aristocracy and have a murky past that has social ramifications for the family if you are sick usual Duke storylines.
