It’s the first Tuesday of 2024 and that means we’re looking at the first batch of new releases this year!

January starts slow for us, but by mid-month we’re going to have so many books to talk about. Not to tease you but I get to look at the spreadsheet with everyone’s picks and it’s shaping up to be a great book month.

What’s on your release list this week? Let us know!

  • A Fragile Enchantment

A Fragile Enchantment by Allison Saft

    Author: Allison Saft
Released: January 2, 2024 by Wednesday Books
    Genre: , , ,

In this romantic fantasy of manners from New York Times bestselling author Allison Saft, a magical dressmaker commissioned for a royal wedding finds herself embroiled in scandal when a gossip columnist draws attention to her undeniable chemistry with the groom.

Niamh Ó Conchobhair has never let herself long for more. The magic in her blood that lets her stitch emotions and memories into fabric is the same magic that will eventually kill her. Determined to spend the little time she has left guaranteeing a better life for her family, Niamh jumps at the chance to design the wardrobe for a royal wedding in the neighboring kingdom of Avaland.

But Avaland is far from the fairytale that she imagined. While young nobles attend candlelit balls and elegant garden parties, unrest brews amid the working class. The groom himself, Kit Carmine, is prickly, abrasive, and begrudgingly being dragged to the altar as a political pawn. But when Niamh and Kit grow closer, an unlikely friendship blossoms into something more—until an anonymous gossip columnist starts buzzing about their chemistry, promising to leave them alone only if Niamh helps to uncover the royal family’s secrets. The rot at the heart of Avaland runs deep, but exposing it could risk a future she never let herself dream of, and a love she never thought possible.

Transporting readers to a Regency England-inspired fantasy world, A Fragile Enchantment is a sweeping romance threaded with intrigue, unforgettable characters, and a love story for the ages.

Aarya: Generally don’t read that much YA, but the magical regency vibes are calling to me.

  • Last Call at the Local

    Author: Sarah Grunder Ruiz
Released: January 2, 2024 by Berkley
    Genre: ,
Series: Love, Lists & Fancy Ships #3

Opposites attract when a free-spirited American singer-songwriter with ADHD teams up with a charming Irishman to revitalize his family’s pub in the next heartfelt romance from the author of Luck and Last Resorts.

Raine Hart is used to the challenges of living with ADHD. It’s why she ditched her life in Boston to busk around Europe as a traveling musician. No boss. No schedule. No one to disappoint but herself. But when a careless mistake in Ireland leaves her unable to perform, she sees no other option but to give up her nomadic life.

Since inheriting The Local, Jack Dunne has wanted to make the pub his own. But the baggage of running a family business and the intrusive thoughts that stem from his OCD make changing things a challenge.

Over a pint with handsome, tattooed Jack, Raine accidentally insults him and the pub. Instead of taking offense, Jack, impressed by her vision of what the pub could be, offers her a job bringing it to life.

But when Raine and Jack develop feelings for one another their opposite lifestyles won’t accommodate, it becomes clear the pub isn’t the only thing that needs reinventing. As the end of their business collaboration draws near, they’ll have to find a way past the limits they’ve placed on themselves or let go of a love that could last a lifetime.

We’ve heard good things about Grunder Ruiz’s emotional and lovely contemporaries.

Lily is everything viewers love to she’s feisty, dramatic, and not afraid to cause a stir. Her villain narrative on the show should be the cherry on top of the cake of Murray’s perfect season, but what no one knows is that Murray already knows Lily. Not as Lily Fireball, but as Lily his former best friend.

Now Lily has thrust herself back into Murray’s life, and into the most stressful season he’s ever worked on. Why is she here? What is her agenda? And why can’t Murray just concentrate on his job, instead of fighting to shield her from hateful viewers – and keep her with him forever?

Shana: Lily was one of my favorite character in the first two books in this series and I can’t wait to see her get a HEA.

  1. Kathryn says:

Ohhh I’m partway through book two in Jodi McAlister’s Marry me, Juliet series and I’m so happy to hear that the moment I finish I can get the next one. Both one and two have been audiobooks and I’ve been enjoying them so far, but I’m keen to see more of Lily!

  2. Jill Q. says:

Oooh,, these all look pretty good. I’d pass on the Ruby Dixon b/c she’s just not for me, but I’m intrigued by a reality show villain and all the cozy, romantic fantasy vibes of the other ones.

Also, maybe a typo in the heading?

  3. kkw says:

I love the idea that maybe it’s not a typo. Although then it reads as weirdly argumentative.
No, you hide your waller! What did my waller ever do to you? I don’t care whose waller started it, everyone shut their damn wallers or I’m turning this car around.
Is it a small, loud, animal that’s a highly unsuitable but beloved pet? A rude term for your face and/or mouth? The latest toy?

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Hide your wallaby? But who would hide a wallaby—they’re so cute!

Nothing on my tbr this week—but starting next week, a deluge of new releases!

  5. SB Sarah says:

Now I have The Wiggles’ “Willaby wallaby woo” stuck in my head!

  6. denise says:

Since it is the first day back to stuff in the new year, I’d be just as happy wallering around reading.

wallering is Southern slang for lying around and being lazy–derived from wallow–though many times it’s more of a pejorative with the emphasis on laziness. Pigs/hogs wallering in the mud.

Are those video pop-up ads new? Lower right side. They seem to be slowing the page from properly loading.

  7. Lisa F says:

A Fragile Enchantment was Perfectly Okay! The rest are on my TBW pile.

  8. footiepjs says:

I don’t remember how I found Lily Mayne’s BERRIES AND GREED, but I read it based on its madcap premise – an introverted member of a subterranean earth race gets a new roommate from a cult devoted to said race (she’s not a true believer) and they watch tv and order in food – and I was pleasantly surprised so I’m looking forward to book 2 SHOTS AND BARBS out this Friday.

  9. Cheyanne Farley says:

Having rough time with health issues so reading latest Temple Grandin. Its OK to be different

  10. Kolforin says:

Another typo, in the Series field of Barbarian’s Touch — “Plant” instead of “Planet”.

  11. HeatherS says:

I have a resolution to not buy any books this year. My TBR is out of control and I can get most of what I want to read at the library, also I’m trying to pay some things off this year. “A Fragile Enchantment” looks lovely, so I put in a request for the library to buy it and will jump on the hold list when it appears in the catalog. Self (and shelf) control!
