  • It Happened One Fight

It Happened One Fight by Maureen Lee Lenker

It Happened One Fight by Maureen Lenker is $2.99! I believe we mentioned this on a previous Hide Your Wallet. The Old Hollywood setting definitely grabbed our attention. Apologies if this is a leftover KDD from yesterday.

From Entertainment Weekly writer Maureen Lee Lenker comes a swoony romantic comedy set in the world of 1930s film.

Joan Davis is a movie star, and a damned good actor, too. Unfortunately, Hollywood only seems to care when she stars alongside Dash Howard, Tinseltown’s favorite leading man and a perpetual thorn in Joan’s side. She’s sick of his hotshot attitude, his never-ending attempts to get a rise out of her—especially after the night he sold her out to the press on a studio-arranged date. She’ll turn her career around without him. She’s engaged to Hollywood’s next rising star, after all, and preparing to make the film that could finally get her taken seriously. Then, a bombshell drops: thanks to one of his on-set pranks gone wrong, Dash and Joan are legally married.

Reputation on the line, Joan agrees to star alongside Dash one last time and move production to Reno, where divorce is legal after a six-week residency. But between on-set shenanigans, fishing competitions at Lake Tahoe, and intimate moments leaked to the press, Joan begins to see another side to the man she thought she had all figured out, and it becomes harder and harder to convince the public—and herself—that her marriage to Dash is the joke it started out as.

  • The Last Wolf

The Last Wolf by Maria Vale

RECOMMENDEDThe Last Wolf by Maria Vale is $1.99! I really enjoyed this book and its departure from the usual shifter mythology. Vale does a great job creating a sense of place. Be warned though, there is violence in the book and it is very descriptive.

For three days out of thirty, when the moon is full and her law is iron, the Great North Pack must be wild.

If she returns to her Pack, the stranger will die.
    But if she stays…

Silver Nilsdottir is at the bottom of her Pack’s social order, with little chance for a decent mate and a better life. Until the day a stranger stumbles into their territory, wounded and beaten, and Silver decides to risk everything on Tiberius Leveraux. But Tiberius isn’t all he seems, and in the fragile balance of the Pack and wild, he may tip the destiny of all wolves…

  • Dukes Are Forever

Dukes Are Forever by Anna Harrington

Dukes Are Forever by Anna Harrington is $1.99! This is a historical romance with what seems to be an enemies to lovers plot. It’s the first book in the Secret Life of Scoundrels series. Some readers found the heroine a bit TSTL, but others really loved the hero and his quest for revenge.

    ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE
Battlefields and barrooms hold much more interest for Edward Westover, Duke of Strathmore, than a little girl’s fondness for dolls and lace. When he takes possession of his enemy’s estate, everything that villain held dear-including his daughter-belongs to Edward. Hire a governess, arrange a dowry, give a few reassurances, and be off on his way-that’s Edward’s plan. But he’s in for the shock of his life. For his new ward is a beautiful, impetuous, and utterly irresistible woman . . .

    . . . AND WAR
Kate Benton is stunned. Who is this arrogant, infuriating man who’s invited himself into her home and taken over her life? Her vow: to do everything in her power to convince him to leave her-and Brambly House-alone. Yet as chilly days melt into sultry nights, Kate sees glimpses of kindness underneath Edward’s cool façade . . . and a passionate nature that takes her breath away. There’s so much she doesn’t know about this man. But does she dare trust this devilish duke with her heart?

  • Hot in Hellcat Canyon

Hot in Hellcat Canyon by Julie Anne Long

Hot in Hellcat Canyon by Julie Anne Long is $1.99! This is the first book in her Hellcat Canyon series, which is contemporary romance. Readers enjoyed the banter and flirtation between the hero and heroine, though some readers found it forgettable. Have you read this one?

A broken truck, a broken career, and a breakup heard around the world land superstar John Tennessee McCord in Hellcat Canyon. Legend has it that hearts come in two colors there: gold or black. And that you can find whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s love . . . or trouble. JT may have found both in waitress Britt Langley.

His looks might cause whiplash and weak knees, but Britt sees past JT’s rough edge and sexy drawl to a person a lot like her: in need of the kind of comfort best given hot and quick, with clothes off and the lights out.

Her wit is sharp but her eyes and heart—not to mention the rest of her—are soft, and JT is falling hard. But Britt has a secret as dark as the hills, and JT’s past is poised to invade their present. It’s up to the people of Hellcat Canyon to help make sure their future includes a happily ever after.

Over a hundred historical romances for 99¢ each. I think this may be valid in the UK, too.

  2. Lisa F says:

It Happened One Fight is a barrel of fun, and I love the Long!

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

I thought THE LAST WOLF was meh. I don’t love first person POV when the POV character is annoying and insecure (as the heroine is here for a solid 2/3 of the book). The hero also has a rather dark professional past that’s just glossed over. There are more books in the series, but I haven’t looked into them.

  4. Jessi says:

The Last Wolf & its sequels really worked for me. Something about the world-building – a community of werewolves in upstate New York trying to hide in plain sight – the mythology, and the vulnerability of both the female and male main characters performed the necessary alchemy to become an all-time favorite.

  5. KitBee says:

I wanted to love IT HAPPENED ONE FIGHT more than I did. I enjoyed the Old Hollywood setting but felt the book was too long — there were several points where the main characters overcame a big conflict and the book could have ended, but instead they had to confront yet another obstacle. By the end I was a little tired of it.

  6. DonnaMarie says:

And now for the differing opinion. I actually just reread THE LAST WOLF (really, just last weekend) and still found it original and compelling. The world building is first class. I get what @FE is saying about Sil, but she also made a pretty bold move that risked everything she valued when she tied her fate to Ti. As much as I liked this one, the MMC in the next book, A WOLF APART just broke my heart for a good part of the that book, and he remains my favorite character in the series.

Also, thumbs up for WILD IN HELLCAT CANYON. It was my first Julie Ann Long, but not my last.

  7. Nina says:

I haven’t read The Last Wolf but having just finished and loved Molly Malloy and the Angel of Death by the same author I am in. Molly Malloy has religious content but it is no way and inspy. Hey, isn’t not offen the conflict keeping the principals apart is the potential end of reality.

  9. Ms. M says:

I liked The Last Wolf a lot and intend to read more in the series. That said, I did agree to some extent that there’s a big revelation regarding the hero near the end that needed a couple more scenes to be processed. But I like the shifters as “wolves who become humans” concept instead of the usual “humans become wolves” and the heroine’s ignorance of human customs was pretty funny.

  10. Musical Trees says:

I’m loving the discussion about THE LAST WOLF. I read this one four years ago and enjoyed it enough to continue reading the series. Book 2, A WOLF APART, was also good. Then I read book 3, FOREVER WOLF. I was devastated. Book 3 is not, in my opinion, a romance. It’s been long enough and my memory is terribly enough that I remember very few details of books 1 and 2 apart from general feelings and some of the world building. But boy do I remember the ending of book 3. Be warned!

  11. Susan says:

Julie Anne Long is one of my favorite authors. Her Hot in Hellcat Canyon series is IMO an overlooked gem. The whole series is delightful and I woukd highly recommend picking this one up. It’s been a reread for me its that good. The last book in the series is one of my all time favorites in contemporary romances.

  12. Teev says:

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone: A Novel by Benjamin Stevenson is $1.99 at Amazon US. I thought it was loads of fun and highly recommend it!

  13. Carole says:

I agree with Susan – Hot in Hellcat Canyon Series by Julie Anne Long is one of my comfort read series when I need to get lost in something lighthearted and romantic and not a lot of angst. Highly recommend.

  14. Amanda says:

@Musical Trees: See, I loved book three! Whenever I talk about this book, it’s always with the lesson that the HEA the reader wants isn’t the HEA that the main character wants. And then of course, that leads me down the rabbit hole of how we, as readers, may sometimes impose/enforce our own envisioning of an HEA onto characters who may want vastly different things for themselves.

  15. Layla says:

I gave It Happened One Fight a solid 3 stars but only because I love stories about the film industry in Hollywood’s heyday. It had a LOT of issues. The writing, while decent, at least enough that I didn’t DNF, was not exactly good from a a technical standpoint. It’s very clear it’s a debut. It’s a breezy and enjoyable enough read but I’d recommend getting it from your library over buying it.

  16. Maureen says:

I agree with what @Layla said about It Happened One Fight. Just enough to keep me interested, but I wasn’t wowed.

I read the Hot in Hellcat Canyon series a while ago, but started re-reading after this post. I had forgotten how much I love them. I just read a scene in Dirty Dancing at Devil’s Leap, where the hero is helping the heroine out of an attic-I was crying with laughter!
