Any Rogue Will Do
Any Rogue Will Do by Bethany Bennett is 99c! This is book one in the Misfits of Mayfair series and features a fake relationship. Book two was featured in an edition of Cover Awe. I’m actually pretty curious about this series, if anyone has read it and would like to share their thoughts.
He ruined her reputation―now he’s the only one who can save it.
For exactly one season, Lady Charlotte Wentworth played the biddable female the ton expected―and all it got her was society’s mockery and derision. Now she’s determined to be in charge of her own future. So when an unwanted suitor tries to manipulate her into an engagement, she has a plan. He can’t claim to be her fiancé if she’s engaged to someone else. Even if it means asking for help from the last man she would ever marry.
Ethan, Lord Amesbury, made a lot of mistakes, but the one he regrets the most is ruining Lady Charlotte’s reputation. He’s older and wiser now, but his attraction to Lottie never wavered. Going along with her charade is the least he can do to clean the slate and perhaps earn her forgiveness. And, if he’s lucky, her love.

The Mountain in the Sea
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler is $3.99! I mentioned this one in a previous Hide Your Wallet and it’s reminding me a lot of the movie Arrival. Last time this was on sale, many of you either were super curious or had good things to say!
Humankind discovers intelligent life in an octopus species with its own language and culture, and sets off a high-stakes global competition to dominate the future.
Rumors begin to spread of a species of hyperintelligent, dangerous octopus that may have developed its own language and culture. Marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen, who has spent her life researching cephalopod intelligence, will do anything for the chance to study them.
The transnational tech corporation DIANIMA has sealed the remote Con Dao Archipelago, where the octopuses were discovered, off from the world. Dr. Nguyen joins DIANIMA’s team on the islands: a battle-scarred security agent and the world’s first android.
The octopuses hold the key to unprecedented breakthroughs in extrahuman intelligence. The stakes are high: there are vast fortunes to be made by whoever can take advantage of the octopuses’ advancements, and as Dr. Nguyen struggles to communicate with the newly discovered species, forces larger than DIANIMA close in to seize the octopuses for themselves.
But no one has yet asked the octopuses what they think. And what they might do about it.
A near-future thriller about the nature of consciousness, Ray Nayler’s The Mountain in the Sea is a dazzling literary debut and a mind-blowing dive into the treasure and wreckage of humankind’s legacy.

Air Awakens: The Complete Series
Air Awakens: The Complete Series by Elise Kova is $1.99 at Amazon! This collects all five books in the series. This is a YA (maybe NA?) fantasy adventure with some romance. I’ve enjoyed some of Kova’s other books, though haven’t tried this series.
The complete, five book Air Awakens series from author Elise Kova.
Air Awakens
A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all–the Crown Prince Aldrik–she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.
FIRE FALLING, BOOK TWO
Soldier… Sorcerer… Savior… Who is Vhalla Yarl?Vhalla Yarl marches to war as property of the Solaris Empire. The Emperor counts on her to bring victory, the Senate counts on her death, and the only thing Vhalla can count on is the fight of her life. As she grapples with the ghosts of her past, new challenges in the present threaten to shatter the remnants of her fragile sanity. Will she maintain her humanity? Or will she truly become the Empire’s monster?
EARTH’S END, BOOK THREE
A woman awoken in air, a soldier forged by fire, a weapon risen from blood.
Vhalla Yarl has made it to the warfront in the North. Forged by blood and fire, she has steeled her heart for the final battle of the Solaris Empire’s conquest. The choices before Vhalla are no longer servitude or freedom, they are servitude or death. The stakes have never been higher as the Emperor maintains his iron grip on her fate, holding everything Vhalla still has left to lose in the balance.
WATER’S WRATH, BOOK FOUR
The Solaris Empire found victory in the North and, at the cost of her heart and her innocence, Vhalla Yarl has earned her freedom. But the true fight is only beginning as the secret forces that have been lurking in the shadows, tugging at the strings of Vhalla’s fate, finally come to light. Nowhere is safe, and Vhalla must tread carefully or else she’ll fall into the waiting arms of her greatest foe. Or former lover.CRYSTAL CROWNED, BOOK FIVE
Long live Solaris. One bloodthirsty ruler has been overthrown by another, casting the shadow of death over the Solaris Empire. Vhalla Yarl stands upon the stage of fate, prepared to do battle one final time. Fragile alliances will be tested and new bonds will be formed as the world is reshaped. She fights as the champion of peace, but when the night is darkest will she be able to pay the price of a new dawn?

The Devil to Pay
The Devil to Pay by K.C. Bateman is FREE! This is a historical romance by Kate Bateman, whose current stuff both Elyse and I have enjoyed. I’m also interested in the Italian setting. Have you read this one?
Italy, 1492.
A ruthless mercenary skilled in the art of conquest.
An heiress who refuses to be tamed.
The Devil’s own bargain . . .Cara di Montessori has a price upon her head. Her traitorous uncle has murdered her father and seized her home. Her only hope of survival, and of regaining her birthright, is an alliance with her childhood nemesis, the infamous mercenary Il Diavolo. The most irritating—and seductive—man Cara’s ever met.
Battle hardened and world-weary, Alessandro del Sarto has earned the sobriquet Il Diavolo. He needs a politically expedient marriage to secure the lasting peace he craves,
but the simpering ladies of court hold little interest. More than anything, he longs for a challenge.Headstrong beauty Cara has always been Il Diavolo’s only weakness, the one woman he’s never been able to forget. When she appears at his door begging for help, the two strike a devil’s bargain. In return for his assistance, for two weeks Cara must entertain his guests, relieve his boredom—and warm his bed.
Cara has no intention of succumbing to del Sarto’s studied seduction, but the passion that simmers between them is more potent than her paper twists of gunpowder. Surrounded by danger and intrigue, she must choose between what she’s always thought of as her destiny, and what could be the greatest prize of all—her heart’s desire.

I loved Bethany Bennett’s series! The second book, West End Earl was my favorite historical romance I read last year. Any Rogue Will Do was a great debut though. I’ve been anticipating her next release, whatever and whenever it is.
I loved the whole Misfits of Mayfair series. I agree the second book was my favorite but they were all worthwhile. I checked Bethany Bennett’s page and it doesn’t look like she has anything new coming.
The devil’s toupee??
(Sorry, couldn’t resist haha)
I’ll third the Bethany Bennett books! I’m the dissenting voice I guess in that I loved the first book to the point of having re-read it at least once while I wasn’t as fond of the second. The third is set up to be the romance of the sister of the MMC of West End Earl but hasn’t had any update in her site as mentioned above.
The Bennett is showing $6.99 for me. Bummer~
I had to DNF the Bateman because it had an extremely unbalanced power dynamic and felt very old school. It’s possible that the author went on to subvert everything, but I didn’t make it that far if she did. The hero is much older, much more experienced, very manipulative, and morally dark grey, while the heroine felt more like a big-eyed early Disney princess than a person. The whole thing just felt icky to me. But someone who likes the Harlequin Presents style setup might really like this.
HONEY BADGER ALERT!
Shelly Laurenston’s BORN TO BE BADGER (Honey Badger Chronicles #5) (that just released less than a month ago in November) is showing up as mass market priced on kindle. So, not what we’d consider as sale price…but 40% cheaper than hardcover price!
I recently read West End Earl, which is the next book after Any Rogue Will Do, and the writing style was definitely not my cup of tea. Too modern dialogue for a Regency romance, which I found super distracting. There were other elements as well that were not my thing, so I won’t be reading any other books in this series.
Mountain in the Sea was one of my favorite books of 2022. It takes a bit to get going but once it did, I was riveted. I have so many tags and underlines in that book. I will go back for a second read, I’m sure. I would recommend it to anyone.
